This study applies a qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to test how configurations of gender equality, masculinity, highly educated women, and happiness, alone or in different combinations, explain the presence or absence of women on the board of directors (WoB). The global solution has considerable explanatory coverage and presents four alternative combinations conducive to both the presence and absence of WoB. Overall, the results show that the absence of gender equality is almost a necessary condition for the absence of WoB. The other conditions, per se, are not enough to explain the presence or absence of WoB, but in different combinations they are. For example, the combination of highly educated women, gender equality, and happiness is the solution with a higher consistent value to explain the presence of WoB. In this study, we sought to contribute with a novel, and far-reaching way of considering the determinants of the presence of WoB, moving past the typical determinants of WoB such as board size and board independence, or board members characteristics (such as experience or age) and shifting the focus solely from the corporate context to broader social, cultural and political contexts. The study presents recommendations for academics, practitioners, and policymakers, particularly to consider different determinants of underrepresentation of WoB and how new initiatives shall be implemented to advance the field and transition to economies and societies with greater social justice and gender equality.

This article examines the work of ABAAD so as to explore the complexities of doing gender activism in a country ruled by both the state and religious law. The work of this non-faith, non-political organisation allows for such an exploration within postcolonial settings where religious law has tremendous influence. In keeping with the scholarly debate on how contestations around gender and sexuality often play out where religious and secular matters intersect, we find it both relevant and important to consider the responses of ABAAD’s gender activism in the context of Lebanon. We draw on the case of ABAAD to explore how “transformational approaches” propose to achieve gender equality and prevent gender-based violence through transforming patriarchal structures. We demonstrate that such “transformational approaches” require active yet careful engagement with religion through long-term dialogue and exchange. In the wake of the influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon, interventions tend to focus on responding to the increase in gender-based violence in refugee communities. While such responses are urgent, necessary and important, we argue that they also include a shift from “transformational approaches” to “gendered humanitarianisms,” which can hinder change in underlying discriminatory structures.

Previous research in industrialized countries finds that attitudes toward gender equality are affected by family-related transitions as young adults with egalitarian attitudes based on growing equality between the sexes in the public sphere of education and work encounter a much less equal situation in the private sphere of the family. Sweden, however, is a society known for its emphasis on gender equality in the family. This study examines the effect of family transitions on attitudes toward gender equality, asking whether egalitarian attitudes can withstand changing family transitions in Sweden. Using longitudinal data from the Young Adult Panel Study, we examine six different family transitions and three measures of attitudes toward gender equality for men and women, with only three significant findings across 18 coefficients. We conclude that most Swedish young adults possess “enduring attitudes,” likely because there is strong state support for families and gender sharing in the private sphere.

If the development of technology, means of communication, and rapid transportation have made continents closer and made the world a small village, the outcome of the ensuing encounters among cultures and civilizations is far from being a mere success. Within this new reality Muslims, whether they live in majority or minority contexts, face multiple challenges in terms of relating to non-Muslim cultures and traditions. One of these areas is the status of women and gender equality. Ali Mazrui was one of the few Muslim intellectuals to be deeply interested in this issue. His dual belonging, as an African and as a westerner, enable him to understand such issues arising from the economic, political, and ethical contrasts between the West and Islam. This work pays tribute to this exceptional intellectual’s contribution toward the rapprochement between the western and the Islamic value systems, illustrating how he managed to create a “virtual” space for meeting and living together between two worlds that remain different yet dependent upon each other.
