Purpose Deregulation of domestic markets and the liberalization of international markets have dramatically changed air transportation. One of the important results of this change is the environmental effects of air transportation. This study aims to examine the implications of air transportation on environmental sustainability in the context of airline business strategies in liberalized and globalized air transport industry. Design/methodology/approach The paper discusses the relationship between liberalization, airline strategies and environmental sustainability of air transportation using the related literature. Then, to show some environmental impacts on the axis of the relationship discussed, emission rates for the aircraft landing and take-off phase were calculated on a global basis based on the aircraft traffic. Findings The discussion in the paper shows that the liberalization policies and the strategies of airlines supported by these policies, in essence, contradict the environmental sustainability of air transport. Considering the flight share projections of EUROCONTROL for different aircraft types on a global basis and the World Bank’s global flight traffic forecast for the years 2016 and 2025, it has been demonstrated that the number of aircraft departures will increase by 30%, whilst the number of aircraft emissions will increase by 41.5%. Practical implications Airlines are one of the main actors that will play a role in reducing the environmental impacts of air transportation. Therefore, this study is important in giving an idea to both policymakers and airline managers on how airline companies’ strategies should be shaped to realize both corporate sustainability and environmentally sustainable air transportation. Originality/value There are many studies in the literature regarding the environmental effects of air transport. However, there are not many studies linking environmental impacts with airline strategies that directly affect air transport demand. This study is different in that it gives environmental sustainability by associating it with its root causes.

Air transportation industry is a globally growing industry. As an inseparable part of this industry, airport management is also becoming more crucial issue to be dealt with. Airports offer economic and social benefits to the society, but also environmental impacts of airport operations are increasing due to high traffic growth. While airport capacity is increasing, airport operators are being responsible for mitigating environmental constraints. Today to implement airport environmental management system is seen as a critical way of solution. To ensure effective implementation of this system, an organizational change with definite roles, responsibilities and structure are needed. This study illustrates a way of organizational response to market forces and national regulations guiding the achievement of sustainable airports by determining the structure and the roles in an airport organization.

<p align="center"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>Porter's theory of international competitiveness departs from his belief that classical economic theory that explains comparative advantage is inadequate. A country's competitiveness is determined by the ability of industries to innovate and improve their capabilities. Tourism is currently the star for countries to improve their performance. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index can provide support for countries that want to improve their tourism competitiveness. Literature study in a journal entitled "Measuring Competitiveness Objectives: Application of the Competitiveness Index for Travel and Tourism (2007)" can be a benchmark for measuring Indonesia's tourism power. The advantages of Indonesian tourism so far are still based on the low price factor, but the low price factor is an effective competitiveness factor. This makes Indonesia need to improve other factors that can become more effective competitiveness factors, such as ICT Readiness, Air Transportation Infrastructure, Environmental Sustainability, Land and Port Infrastructure, and Tourist Services Infrastructure.</p><p><strong><em>Keywords: </em></strong><em>Competitiveness, Tourist Destinations, TTCI, Tourism</em></p><p align="center"><strong> </strong></p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRAK</strong></p><p>Teori Porter tentang daya saing nasional berangkat dari keyakinannya bahwa teori ekonomi klasik yang menjelaskan tentang keunggulan komparatif tidak mencukupi. Daya saing suatu negara ditentukan oleh kemampuan industri melakukan inovasi dan meningkatkan kemampuannya. Pariwisata saat ini menjadi primadona bagi negara-negara untuk meningkatkan perekonomiannya. <em>Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index</em> dapat memberikan gagasan bagi negara-negara yang ingin meningkatkan daya saing pariwisatanya. Studi kepustakaan pada jurnal yang berjudul “<em>Measuring Destination Competitiveness: An Application of the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index</em> (2007)” dapat menjadi sebuah tolak ukur bagaimana mengukur daya saing pariwisata Indonesia. Keunggulan pariwisata Indonesia selama ini masih bertopang pada faktor harga yang murah, namun faktor harga murah pada kenyataannya bukan menjadi salah satu faktor daya saing yang efektif. Green transformational leadership has been identified as the most effective leadership style where the leader seeks to change the status quo by transforming the organization and also considers achieving environmental goals and inspiring followers to perform beyond expected levels of environmental performance. Drawing insights from the literature on transformational leadership, this chapter examines the influence of green transformational leadership on organizational behavior effectiveness and environmental sustainability. This chapter submits that organizations should be moving towards green innovation by formulating policies and embarking on strategies to meet customers' demands and satisfy environmental needs in the marketplace. Therefore, organizations should consider going green in all they do as this will also have a tremendous influence on the employees' green self-efficacy and impact on the society at large. The chapter concludes that organizational behavior effectiveness in recent times requires responsible business practices or solutions from those in leadership.

This chapter is aimed to analyze the relationships between environmental sustainability, urban ecosystems, and green innovation. The method employed is the critical analytical review of literature and further discussion on the issues focusing the city´s experience on managing the formulation, generation, development, implementation, and evaluation of new behaviors and ideas in green innovation. It is concluded that the green innovation is directly related with the environmental sustainability and urban ecosystems. The interest of this analysis lies in providing support to urban settlements in managing the risks inherent in green area innovation, incremental or radical as a community's management would experience in relation to the environmental sustainability in urban ecosystems.

The method employed is the critical analysis supported by a review of the literature and consult to experts in the field. It is concluded that the urban green innovation capacity planning has a critical role in urban innovation development in specific areas of economic growth, social inclusion and equality, environmental sustainability, health, education, business, etc. To achieve these aims, urban green innovation requires to guarantee the public interest, the democratization of the territory, and the new institutional design.

Under the background of environmental sustainability, it is of great significance to investigate how green innovation influences firm performance dimensions in emerging economies. Explicitly, the interaction effects of absorptive capacity (AC) and managerial environmental concern (MEC) on the correlation between green innovation and firm performance dimensions must be explored. Our data were obtained through a questionnaire survey from 253 companies operating in China. Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), we found that (1) green innovation has a robustly positive effect on firm performance dimensions (operational, financial and environmental), and (2) absorptive capacity and managerial environmental concern can positively affect the correlation between green innovation and firm performance dimensions. Our results illustrate the integrating effects of absorptive capacity, managerial environmental concern, green innovation and firm performance dimensions.
