Abstract Historians of the trial of Charles I will be familiar with the two copies of the manuscript journals kept in The National Archives of the U.K. and the U.K. Parliamentary Archives. Besides these manuscripts, two further copies of the trial proceedings are held in the Beinecke Library, Yale, and in the British Library. This article compares these versions to propose a tentative document history of the journals, suggesting that these manuscripts were produced for different purposes: what began as the basis for an authoritative public account of the trial later became a text intended for a more select legal audience.

The British Library holds one of 65 existing copies of the first dated book printed in Muscovy by Ivan Fedorov and Petr Mstislavets, the Apostol (Acts and Epistles) (1564) and one of two known copies of Ivan Fedorov’s Primer (L’viv, 1574), which is considered by many to be the first Cyrillic book printed in Ukraine. The recent history of these books is linked to the name of the legendary Russian art critic and impresario Serge Diaghilev (1872–1929). Both titles belonged to his private book collection. A story of Diaghilev’s collection became part of the history of the British Library when in 1975 it acquired, among other books and manuscripts, his copy of the famous 1564 Apostol. Diaghilev’s copy of the 1574 Primer resurfaced at Harvard University Library, but its detailed descriptions and facsimile editions helped the British Library curator Christine Thomas, then in charge of the Russian collections, to identify a second copy, which is now held at the British Library. This article tells the story of how over 70 titles from Diaghilev’s collection of rare Russian books and manuscripts were acquired by the British Library, examines possible reasons for Diaghilev’s passion for books, and highlights other themes relevant for the history of private and public book collecting.

This collection of Old English royal records is found in four manuscripts: London, British Library, Cotton Vespasian B. vi; London, British Library, Cotton Tiberius B. v, vol. 1; Cambridge, Corpus Christi College 183; and Rochester, Cathedral Library, A. 3. 5. The present paper aims both to provide an accurate, accessible edition of the texts in the first three of these manuscripts and to discuss the development of the collection from its origin to the stages represented by the extant versions. We owe to Kenneth Sisam most of our knowledge of the history of the Anglo-Saxon genealogies. Although his closely argued discussion remains the basis for any approach to these sources, it lacks the essential aid to comprehension, the texts themselves. It is perhaps this omission, as much as the difficulty of the subject and the undoubted accuracy of many of his conclusions, that has occasioned the neglect from which the texts have suffered in recent years.

BackgroundConcussions are caused by a blow to or a violent shaking of the head or body. With increasing popularity of novel sports, such as Quidditch inspired by the Harry Potter series, it is suspected that players are commonly misdiagnosed or not seeking treatment after suffering a concussion. Here, we look at the incidence of concussion in Quidditch players.Materials/methodsAfter obtaining IRB approval we conducted an anonymous cross-sectional survey amongst players in the Major League Quidditch for the 2017 season. The survey included questions corresponding to demographics, previous medical history specific to concussions, migraines, co-morbidities, and suspected concussions whilst engaging in Quidditch.ResultsFour hundred sixty-four players were contacted via email with 34% response rate. Of 34%, 96.2% previously engaged in sports either high school or collegiate level. Twenty-six percent of males and 29% of females reported having previously medically diagnosed concussions outside of Quidditch. Fifteen percent reported never hitting their head during a Quidditch match while 19% indicated more than 10 total head injuries. Twenty-five percent of players reported a medically confirmed concussion during play, with 20% indicating a suspected concussion without medical evaluation. Thirty-four percent reported a history of depression or anxiety with 21 players reporting a history of migraines. Those with confirmed head injuries or suspected concussion, 39% indicated that they sought medical treatment while 24% responded that they did not.ConclusionMajority of Quidditch players reported having suffered a concussion prior to playing while half reported suffering a confirmed or suspected concussion during a game. Players were divided on seeking treatment. It is well documented that history of migraines or other comorbidities combined with multiple concussions leads to longer recovery times as well as higher rates of post-concussive syndrome. With the growing rate of traumatic brain injuries, it is imperative that players are diagnosed and treated to prevent future consequences.

QDL offers cultural and historical materials of the Gulf and other regions and make it available online for everyone. The aim of QDL is to improve the understanding of the Islamic world, Arab cultural heritage, and the modern history of the Gulf for the public and the academic researchers.
