ABSTRACT We investigate the reinforcing effects of both unmodified and surface modified nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) on the cure, mechanical, and thermal properties of natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites. The surface of nano TiO2 is modified by cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB). The surface modification of nano TiO2 is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The result reveals that surface modified nano TiO2 is much more efficient in improving the resulting properties of NR nanocomposites in comparison with unmodified nano TiO2. The excellent improvement in the properties of surface modified nano TiO2/NR composites is due to the better hydrophobicity and uniform dispersion of modified nano TiO2 within the NR matrix, as confirmed from morphological analysis. CTAB is much more effective than TEAB with respect to the properties of nano TiO2 based NR composites.

To evaluate the acute lung toxicity of intratracheally instilled nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) in Kunming mice, healthy adult Kunming mice were randomly grouped by their body weights (5 mice in each group). The lungs of mice were intratracheally instilled with 1 mg/kg•bw or 10 mg/kg•bw of nm-TiO2. The control group was intratracheally instilled the same volume physiological brine. After exposure of 1, 7, 14 and 28 days, the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and lung tissue were collected. The indexes in BAL fluid were examined. Lung tissues were assessed by histopathology. The results showed that all indexes of 10mg/kg•bw groups were obviously higher than those of the control group and the group of nano-1mg/kg•bw. Activities of LDH on the 1st, 7th, 14th and 28th day post-exposure (pe), contents of MDA on the 1st, 7th and, 14th day pe and TP on the 1st and 7th day pe as well as the amount of leukocyte on the 1st and 7th day pe of 10mg/kg•bw groups were significantly different compared with control groups (P<0.05).There were no obvious changes observed in the activity of ATP within groups (P>0.05). Histopathology found that lungs of 10mg/kg•bw groups presented great increase in pulmonary inflammation. Many TiO2 particles were still clearly found in the interstitium at 28 days pe. In contrast, low-dose instillation had a low risk potential for producing adverse pulmonary health effects. We conclude that the inflammatory reaction gradually eased after 28 days pe. Under the same experimental condition, the effect of lung injury was severer in high-dose nano-TiO2 than low-dose nano-TiO2.

The coating agent was prepared by adding nano-titanium dioxide(nano-Tio2) and flame retardant to solvent-based polyurethane(PU),then applied to cotton knitted fabric which was finished by padding flame retardant through transfer coating technique, so a multifunctional coating fabric with flame retardancy and anti-UV property was manufactured. Discussing the changes in flame retardancy and anti-UV property with the increase in addition of flame retardant and nano-titanium dioxide. The results showed that the fabric has good flame retardancy and anti-UV property.

Nanofertilizers are new products which contain readily available nutrients in the nanoscale range and are preferred largely due to their efficiency. To investigate the effects of micronutrient nanofertilizers (iron and zinc) as F factor and nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) solution as n factor on yield performance and some morphologic traits of barley, a field experiment was carried out with treating with chelated nanoscale zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) and ferric oxide (nano-Fe2O3) suspensions during three phonological stages. The treatment combination by trait (TT) biplot was used for two-way dataset as various treatment combinations (Fn) with multiple traits. The GT biplot explained 83% of the total variation of the standardized data. The polygon view of TT showed five vertex treatment combinations as F1n1, F1n2, F2n2, F3n1, and F3n2. Therefore, it seems that F3n1 treatment combination had the highest values for all of the  days to maturity, grain yield, straw yield, harvest index, spike length, number of fertile tillers, and grain weight per plant traits. The most prominent relations of tester-view biplot were: a strong positive association between days to maturity and straw yield and among grain yield, harvest index and spike length, while there was a near zero correlation of the number of tillers per plants with days to maturity and straw yield. It can be concluded that TiO2 nanoparticles and nano-micronutrient fertilizers (iron nano-chelate and zinc nano-chelate) could increase yield and yield components of barley. Our findings suggest that the foliar application of nanoparticles resulted in sustainable and high crop production, and among six treatment combinations, F3n2 (zinc nano-chelate with 2000 ppm nano-TiO2) indicated the best performance for most of the measured traits of barley.
