Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the dynamics of food insufficiency and its determinants among farming households in Southwestern Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach A combination of cluster and systematic random sampling was used to select 40 households in each local government area of the selected two states. This gives a total of 160 households per state and 320 households in all for the first data collection. Visiting the same households during the second data collection, only 150 households’ data were useful for analysis. Panel primary data were adopted and they were collected in two periods of late and early rain, respectively, over a period of nine months. Primary data were collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire, administered on farming households in the area of study. The needed information was collected through the use of interview schedules/questionnaires. Findings The transition of food insufficiency households to food sufficiency indicated a differential of 4.25 percent, and the transition of food sufficiency to food insufficiency a differential of 9.33 percent. During the agricultural harvest season more households moved to food sufficiency status (16 percent), while off season insufficiency status was 25.3 percent. The probability of households escaping food insufficiency is 0.25, and the probability of households entering food insufficiency is 0.38. The study provides evidence of transient and high incidence of food insufficiency. Originality/value Past studies of this nature only captured the food insufficiency status of households using a snapshot study. Hence, this study brought in innovation by examining the dynamics of food sufficiency/insufficiency in two periods. Therefore the question this study asks is: can a farm-household be food sufficient over a particular period of time and food insufficient in other time?

Vietnam coffee sector plays a crucial role not only in the country’s economy but also in the global coffee market, and improving coffee production efficiency may benefit coffee producers. However, small-holder coffee farming households still encounter many difficulties regarding resources and socio-economic conditions affecting coffee production efficiency. This study examines relationships among income diversification, rural credit loan, labor dependence, and technical efficiency in coffee production through a face-to-face survey with participation of 143 coffee farming households conducted in Cu M’gar District, Dak Lak Province, Vietnam. The stochastic frontier model shows that the mean of technical efficiency scores is 0.64, and it also verifies the existence of inefficiency variation. Both Maximum Likelihood Estimate (MLE) and Feasible Generalized Least Square (FGLS) consistently indicate that a higher level of diversity in income sources negatively affects coffee production efficiency. Additionally, independence in labor resource for coffee farming may help farmers increase technical efficiency of coffee production. Credit loan has a positive and statistically significant relationship with technical efficiency of coffee production. These relationships hold especially true for smallholder coffee farms with ethnic minority household heads. The policy options of credit loan access, intensive investment in coffee production rather than diversification of coffee farmers’ income sources, and independent management strategies for labor sources are suggested as an integrated approach to improve technical efficiency in coffee production of smallholder coffee farms.

The paper analyzes the impact of the federal regulatory burden on poverty dynamics in Russia. The paper provides regional level indices of the federal regulatory burden on the economy in 2008—2018 which take into account sectoral structure of regions’ output and the level of regulatory rigidity of federal regulations governing certain types of economic activity. Estimates of empirical specifications of poverty theoretical model with the inclusion of macroeconomic and institutional factors shows that limiting the scope of the rulemaking activity of government bodies and weakening of new regulations rigidity contributes to a statistically significant reduction in the level of poverty in Russian regions. Cancellation of 10% of accumulated federal level requirements through the “regulatory guillotine” administrative reform may take out of poverty about 1.1—1.4 million people.

Research highlights the importance of potato crop, which occupies a prominent food and economic status in food security besides rice, wheat and corn at the local and global level. Despite the expansion of the cultivation of potato crop in Iraq in general and Ameriyah district in particular However, potato productivity remains substandard, this may be due to a lack of knowledge of the most efficient varieties and not to use productive resources at the levels at which technical, specialized and economic efficiency is achieved. Therefore, the aim of the research is to determine the technical, specialized and economic efficiency according to the cultivated seed category. The data envelope analysis (DEA) method was used to estimate technical, specialized and economic efficiency, assuming constant and variable capacity returns. As a result of the study, the Safrana variety achieved the highest average technical efficiency according to the stability of the yield and capacity efficiency in addition to achieving the highest average specialized and economic efficiency, The Lapadia variety achieved the highest average technical efficiency, assuming that capacity returns have changed. Therefore, we recommend the adoption of items that achieve higher efficiency and the need to redistribute the elements of production better and Achieving the optimum levels at which technical, specialized and economic efficiency is achieved and saving what has been wasted.
