Dwelling, in the proper sense, is now impossible. —Theodor W. Adorno, Minima Moralia This book is a meditation on a philosophical and religious theme. In it I explore the problem of secularization, not as a social process, but as a conceptual gesture that appears with some prominence in the writings of three key theorists: Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer, and Theodor W. Adorno. The fact that all three of these writers were affiliates of the Institute for Social Research, the so-called Frankfurt School of social philosophy and cultural criticism, may encourage the impression that they agreed upon a common doctrine, though in fact their differences were often profound. This is especially clear when we examine their distinctive views on secularization, a topic that surely ranks among the more controversial problems in modern social theory. Philosophers, political theorists, sociologists, and historians continue...

The article presents briefly, in a personal vision, the execution of a public monumental work, with a religious theme, namely The Wayside Cross, with a step-by-step description of the phases of design and execution of the necessary components resulting from the project. The entire work is realized in a contemporary, personal innovative vision, and the variety of materials and techniques that were used are meant to emphasize the complexity of its building. The paper highlights the difficulties in establishing formal motives for the given theme and describes the moments when the Divine inspiration and protection were felt during the elaboration process, giving a very special note to the evolution and completion of the whole artistic approach. The mosaic - of pictorial type - is different from the slightly monochrome chromatics characteristic for the tradition of this type of monument-size representation. The basic structure of the cross pedestal, with candle shelves; the perfectly symmetrical, metallic, laced grids, of great technical difficulty; the side windows carefully made in the stained-glass technique – the Tiffany technique; the whole range of technical solutions for their installation inside the edifice that shelters the work, as well as the harmonic insertion of the complex into the ambiental atmosphere of the site, all these were challenges of high complexity. The result of this long execution process of about 5 months and its assembling in a unitary religious complex, namely the Wayside Cross, was received with real appreciation both by the priests of the parish in which it is located and by its parishioners, inhabitants of Între Lacuri district from Cluj-Napoca.

This paper is a result of primary research titled “Mapping the Profile of Persuasive Da’wah Agenda in Cimahi City.” Cimahi is well known as the industrial centre of ‘creative animation’. The method of research is quantitative by conducting surveys through questionnaires to 399 respondents in Cimahi using multistage random sampling technique. This paper presents important data on the socio-demographic factors of the citizens which can be basic in planning the effective da’wah activities. The sociodemographic factor aforementioned are age, education, and gender of respondents. Those factors must be accurately identified in order to plan the persuasive da’wah. The views of the citizens toward da’wah activity can be parameters toward persuasive da’wah, including what religious theme they preferred to, their preference on the actual da’wah themes, their liking on entrepreneurial da’wah, etc. Citizens give responses to da’wah agenda of both bil-lisan (da’wah through speech) and bil-hal (da’wah through one’s character). The more accepted a da’wah, it means the more persuasive the da’wah is. When citizens do not like the da’wah, it can be said an unpersuasive one. Da’wah persuasion is closely related to its acceptability by the citizens.

AbstractThis paper analyses the way in which postal Brazilian stamps have contributed to the construction of representations of the catholic religion regarding other religious practices. In this sense, the conception of these stamps was taken into account as media, semioptical texts in close relation with the religious speech. The corpus is composed by postal commemorative Brazilian stamps issued during the twentieth century. The identification and analyzes of the stamps were made through RHM catalogue.  Between the year of 1900 and 2000, the Brazilian post offices issued 2.354 commemorative postage stamps. From the observation and identification of religious recurrences 222 commemorative stamps were compiled. The study correlated the recurring religious theme with the historical Brazilian context, taking into account the decline of the Catholicism as the major religion in Brazil and also the representations of the religious practices in the media. The conclusion of this paper indicates the influence of the National Conference of the Bishops of Brazil regarding the Ministry of the Communications, establishing and enforcing the visibility of Brazilian personalities, events, and also of catholic practices taken as special and superior in comparison with other religious practices.Key-words: Brazil; Religion; Postage Stamps; Social Representation; Visibility.

Based on qualitative research, this article aims to shed some light on the criticism of the functioning of French society by youths of North African origin influenced by a Salafist reading of Islam. The arguments put forward, which draw largely on a religious theme, must be taken seriously. However, the references to a “Salafised” world of meaning are not exclusive and they coexist with an attachment to other, more liberal values. We will therefore endeavour to determine whether the criticism expressed generates separatist attitudes or whether it leads to individual and collective strategies founded on a dual cultural allegiance. Without denying the ambivalences or weaknesses, it is necessary to accurately clarify the identity constructs and social trajectories of the working-class youths studied here.
