Abstract The vibration signals of a planetary gearbox have the characteristics of strong background noise and instability and are non-Gaussian. Bi-spectrums can suppress Gaussian colored noise and are suitable for vibration signal processing of planetary gearboxes. In the traditional fault diagnosis methods based on bi-spectrums, the fault characteristic frequency amplitudes of bi-spectrum or bi-spectrum slices, or the further quantitative calculations of fault characteristic values, are generally used as the basis of fault diagnosis processes. It has been found that bi-spectrum images can directly characterize the faults of the planetary gearboxes. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been used in mechanical fault diagnoses in recent years. One-dimensional original signals are converted into two-dimensional images as CNN input, which is an effective method for mechanical fault diagnoses. At the present time, there has not been any relevant research conducted using bi-spectral images as CNN input. In this study, a fault diagnosis method based on local bi-spectrum and CNN was proposed. A bi-spectral analysis of the vibration signals of the planetary gearbox was first carried out in order to reveal the fault information while retaining the non-Gaussian information. Then, according to the bi-spectrum symmetry, local images containing the entire domain information were taken as the input of the CNN, which reduced the redundancy of the fault information. Then, in order to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the CNN, the key parameters of CNN architecture were optimized. Finally, a CNN diagnosis model was built to realize the classification diagnoses of different fault positions and different fault degrees of planetary gearboxes. This study’s comparison of the diagnosis results of the full bi-spectrum+CNN, local bi-spectrum+SVM, original vibration signal+CNN, and local bi-spectrum+BP neural networks showed that the method proposed in this study had achieved both accuracy and rapidity in the fault diagnoses of planetary gearboxes.

The vibration signals of gearbox gear fault signatures are informative components that can be used for gearbox fault diagnosis and early fault detection. However, the vibration signals are normally non-linear and non-stationary, and they contain background noise caused by data acquisition systems and the interference of other machine elements. Especially in conditions with varying rotational speeds, the informative components are blended with complex, unwanted components inside the vibration signal. Thus, to use the informative components from a vibration signal for gearbox fault diagnosis, the noise needs to be properly distilled from the informational signal as much as possible before analysis. This paper proposes a novel gearbox fault diagnosis method based on an adaptive noise reducer–based Gaussian reference signal (ANR-GRS) technique that can significantly reduce noise and improve classification from a one-against-one, multiclass support vector machine (OAOMCSVM) for the fault types of a gearbox. The ANR-GRS processes the shaft rotation speed to access and remove noise components in the narrowbands between two consecutive sideband frequencies along the frequency spectrum of a vibration signal, enabling the removal of enormous noise components with minimal distortion to the informative signal. The optimal output signal from the ANR-GRS is then extracted into many signal feature vectors to generate a qualified classification dataset. Finally, the OAOMCSVM classifies the health states of an experimental gearbox using the dataset of extracted features. The signal processing and classification paths are generated using the experimental testbed. The results indicate that the proposed method is reliable for fault diagnosis in a varying rotational speed gearbox system.

The important issue in planetary gear fault diagnosis is to extract the dependable fault characteristics from the noisy vibration signal of planetary gearbox. To address this critical problem, an envelope manifold demodulation method is proposed for planetary gear fault detection in the paper. This method combines complex wavelet, manifold learning, and frequency spectrogram to implement planetary gear fault characteristic extraction. The vibration signal of planetary gear is demodulated by wavelet enveloping. The envelope energy is adopted as an indicator to select meshing frequency band. Manifold learning is utilized to reduce the effect of noise within meshing frequency band. The fault characteristic frequency of the planetary gear is shown by spectrogram. The planetary gearbox model and test rig are established and experiments with planet gear faults are conducted for verification. All results of experiment analysis demonstrate its effectiveness and reliability.

The structure of the wind turbine generator system is complex and it is difficult to identify the fault signals because of fault frequency aliasing on the vibration characteristics. The wind turbine fault diagnosis method is raised on single component shock to solve the vibration signal feature extraction during the wind turbines operating. Based on the principle of Hilbert envelope demodulation, this envelope demodulation method is presented for the single IMF component which contains shock fault characteristic frequency to solve the possible problem which fault Frequency is difficult to identify when the original signal is directly asked to envelope. This method has been applied and verified when a wind farm CSC-855W wind turbine vibration monitoring device was presented. The results show that compared with the traditional envelope demodulation method, by this method wind turbine fault characteristic can be more effectively and directly extracted and the accuracy of fault diagnosis can be improved. It is of great practical value.

During the operation process of a gearbox, the vibration signals can reflect the dynamic states of the gearbox. The feature extraction of the vibration signal will directly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of fault diagnosis. One major challenge associated with the extraction process is the mode mixing, especially under such circumstance of intensive frequency. A novel fault diagnosis method based on frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition is proposed in this paper. Firstly, several stationary intrinsic mode functions can be obtained after the initial vibration signal is processed using frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition method. Using the method, the vibration signal feature can be extracted in unworkable region of the empirical mode decomposition. The method has the ability to separate such close frequency components, which overcomes the major drawback of the conventional methods. Numerical simulation results showed the validity of the developed signal processing method. Secondly, energy entropy was calculated to reflect the changes in vibration signals in relation to faults. At last, the energy distribution could serve as eigenvector of support vector machine to recognize the dynamic state and fault type of the gearbox. The analysis results from the gearbox signals demonstrate the effectiveness and veracity of the diagnosis approach.

Due to the existence of multiple rotating parts in the planetary gearbox—such as the sun gear, planet gears, planet carriers, and its unique planetary motion, etc.—the vibration signals generated under multiple fault conditions are time-varying and nonstable, thus making fault diagnosis difficult. In order to solve the problem of planetary gearbox composite fault diagnosis, an improved particle swarm optimization variational mode decomposition (IPVMD) and improved convolutional neural network (I-CNN) are proposed. The method takes as input the spectrum of the original vibration signal that contains rich information. First, the automatic feature extraction of signal spectrum is performed by I-CNN, while a classifier is used to diagnose the fault modes. Second, the composite fault signal is decomposed into multiple single fault signals by adaptive variational mode, and the signal is decomposed as a model input to diagnose the single fault component. Finally, a complete intelligent diagnosis of planetary gearboxes is conducted. Through experimental verification, the composite fault diagnosis method combining IPVMD and I-CNN will diagnose the composite fault and effectively diagnose the sub-fault included in the composite fault.

This paper applies the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) methods to gearbox vibration signal analysis capture from vibrating acceleration sensor for gearbox fault diagnosis. The original modulation fault vibration signals are firstly decomposed into a number of intrinsic mode function (IMF) by the EMD method. Then the fault information diagnosis of the gearbox vibration signals can be extracted from the coefficient-energy value of intrinsic mode function. Experiment result has shown the feasibility and efficiency of the EMD algorithms and energy characteristic method in fault diagnosis and fault message abstraction. It is significant for the monitor operating state of gearbox and detects incipient faults as soon as possible.

Fault feature extraction and application is the key technology of fault diagnosis. In this paper, a fault diagnosis method using bispectrum and bispectrum entropy as the fault feature parameters is put forward. Bispectrum entropy as the information entropy in bispectrum domain can reflect the complexity of information energy. When the structure is failed, the distribution of bispectrum will be changed. bispectrum entropy can reflect this change and achieve good separation of the different types of fault. Vibration signal in different bearing states of a secondary drive gearbox is compared and analyzed, bispectrum energy spetrum and bispectrum entropy are extracted. Feature vector is set up via bispectrum entropy for the fault pattern recognition and diagnosis by BP neural network. The analysis result proves that bispectrum entropy is more sensitive to fault characteristic and can separate the fault of bearing.

The multi-disc wet clutch is widely used in transmission systems as it transfers the torque and power between the gearbox and the driving engine. During service, the buckling of the friction components in the wet clutch is inevitable, which can shorten the lifetime of the wet clutch and decrease the vehicle performance. Therefore, fault diagnosis and online monitoring are required to identify the buckling state of the friction components. However, unlike in other rotating machinery, the time-domain features of the vibration signal lack efficiency in fault diagnosis for the wet clutch. This paper aims to present a new fault diagnosis method based on multi-speed Hilbert spectrum entropy to classify the buckling state of the wet clutch. Firstly, the wet clutch is classified depending on the buckling degree of the disks, and then a bench test is conducted to obtain vibration signals of each class at varying speeds. By comparing the accuracy of different classifiers with and without entropy, Hilbert spectrum entropy shows higher efficiency than time-domain features for the wet clutch diagnosis. Thus, the classification results based on multi-speed entropy achieve even better accuracy.

In this paper, a vibration signal-based hybrid diagnostic method, including vibration signal adaptive decomposition, vibration signal reconstruction, fault feature extraction, and gearbox fault classification, is proposed to realize fault diagnosis of general gearboxes. The main contribution of the proposed method is the combining of signal processing, machine learning, and optimization techniques to effectively eliminate noise contained in vibration signals and to achieve high diagnostic accuracy. Firstly, in the study of vibration signal preprocessing and fault feature extraction, to reduce the impact of noise and mode mixing problems on the accuracy of fault classification, Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) was adopted to realize adaptive signal decomposition and Wolf Grey Optimizer (GWO) was applied to optimize parameters of VMD. The correlation coefficient was subsequently used to select highly correlated Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) to reconstruct the vibration signals. With these re-constructed signals, fault features were extracted by calculating their time domain parameters, energies, and permutation entropies. Secondly, in the study of fault classification, Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) was adopted and Differential Evolutionary (DE) was applied to search its regularization coefficient and kernel parameter to further improve classification accuracy. Finally, gearbox vibration signals in healthy and faulty conditions were obtained and contrast experiences were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid fault diagnosis method.
