Abstract High school students’ difficulties with quantum physics (QP) are partly due to their limited understanding of the nature of science (NOS). The essence of QP can only be understood with informed views about NOS aspects such as the role of models and the relevance of controversies between physicists. Inversely, QP is an ideal topic for teaching aspects of NOS. However, secondary school textbooks seldom support teachers to explicitly address NOS in QP. Drawing on a five year research program, including observations of students and teachers, we present teaching resources that link NOS aspects with QP. Our materials support active and reflective learning activities, while being adaptable to teachers’ individual needs and affordances. We hope to inspire teachers to address NOS in their QP lessons.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine middle and high school students' views of instructional practices teachers may use to facilitate reading of difficult textbooks. One thousand eight hundred nineteen students (776 middle school and 1,043 high school) completed the Student Textbook Adaptation Evaluation Instrument (STAEI). The STAEI consists of a list of 33 textbook adaptations for students to rate in terms of their preference and perceptions of teacher use of the adaptations. A secondary purpose of the study was to compare lower and higher achieving students' responses on the STAEI. To address this purpose, a subset of the initial cohort of students (120 lower achieving and 120 higher achieving) was selected. Results indicate a difference between students' perceptions of the desirability of textbook adaptations (high) and their perceptions of the frequency of use of these adaptations in the classroom (low). Students do not feel they are being exposed to the types of instructional adaptations they need. This is particularly true among high school students and higher achieving students. Discussion focuses on the disparity between student preferences and prevailing practices in secondary school classrooms, as well as the role of students' perceptions in teacher decision making.

The article presents the most important reasons for the low level of the financial and economic competences of high school students. The analysis in this area is based on the research conducted by the National Bank of Poland in November 2014. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the low status of the school subject „introduction to entrepreneurship” which is taught in the secondary school. For this reason the majority of young people lack the basic knowledge in terms of finance and economy. The GFC (global financial crisis) experience has shown that the level of financial liabilities is disproportionate to the possibility of their repayment. One of the reason for this behaviour is the low level of financial education among the young. Therefore, the role of entrepreneurship education at the high school stage is invaluable and determines future attitudes toward economic activity.

This research aims to find out the Role of Teacher Competence Towards the Development of Life Skills of State Junior High School Students 31 West Halmahera Regency, which aims to find out several things, namely; How the role of PPKn teachers in improving the quality of teaching and learning by using the student's life skills approach. This study uses survey methods by collecting their own data a number of units in the same time (time period), which is related to how conditions, characteristic processes, results of a variable, using a set of instruments that are data collection tools and used in collecting data to make it easier and systematic. The results of this study show that Teacher Competence Towards The Development of Life Skills of State Junior High School Students 31 West Halmahera Regency, Teachers are one of the various sources and learning media, so the role of teachers in learning becomes wider and more leads to student learning motivation through his role as a teacher. Teachers are expected to be able to encourage students to always learn in various activities or opportunities through various sources and media. Teachers should help every student and effectively be able to use learning opportunities from various learning sources and media effectively and efficiently. In the learning process a teacher focuses more on aspects, planning the organization of teaching materials, planning the management of teaching and learning activities, planning the management of classes, planning the use of media and teaching resources, and planning assessment of student achievement for the benefit of teaching. Teachers must be able to make decisions on the basis of proper assessment, whether teaching and learning activities are sufficient, whether the methods are changed, whether past activities need to be repeated, while students have not been able to achieve learning goals.

AbstractStudents’ difficulties interpreting diagrams remain a concern in science education. Research about improving diagram comprehension has included few studies of teachers’ orchestration of language and gesture in explaining diagrams—and very few in senior high schools. Research with younger students and studies of research scientists’ practice indicate the significance of the interaction of teachers’ gesture and language in explaining visualisations. The strategic deployment of such teacher-focussed authoritative explanations has been observed in facilitating progression to more complex and symbolic representations in classroom work. However, the paucity of such research in senior high school leaves open the question of how these teachers use gesture and language in managing the challenges of explaining the intricate sub-microscopic and abstract visualisations senior high school students need to negotiate. In this paper, we outline existing studies of teachers’ use of gesture and language to explain complex images in senior high school and investigate how it is managed by two biology teachers with images of different types and complexity representing the activity of certain cell components in the early phase of cell duplication. Implications are drawn for foci of further research including the role of a metalanguage describing different types of visualisations and their affordances.

Advisers are expected to be cautious. Typical instructions in research on risky shift induce the adviser role. However, subjects may take the role of the story's hero when they can identify with the hero. It is acceptable for people to be daring when acting for themselves. This hypothesis of a switch of set predicts that subjects should consider themselves more risky than the majority of their peers, a way of expressing the value of risk, when they are similar to the story's hero. High school students rated themselves and the majority on stories dealing with situations common to their age group and on stories dealing with adult problems. Sex of hero was also manipulated. Results supported the hypothesis of a switch of set. Subjects displaced themselves more when the situation was similar to those they might face; in addition, subjects displaced themselves more when the story's hero was of their sex. No sex differences in general tendency to risky displacement were found.
