Nanoscale experiments with diamond tip that include processing, visualization and tunneling spectroscopy of the surface are presented. Single crystal diamond synthesized by the temperature gradient method under high pressure–high temperature (HPHT) conditions is proposed as a multifunctional tip for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Sequence of the procedures covering growing crystals with predetermined physical properties, selection of the synthesized crystals with the desired habit and their precise shaping have been developed. The original STM’s peculiarity is the electromagnetic probe-to-surface load measuring system. The results of fabrication and characterization of nanostructures for nanoelectronics, data storages and biology are demonstrated and discussed.

The formation of a characteristic space in classification problems can be divided into two stages: the choice of the initial description of objects and the formation of an informative description of objects on the basis of a reduction in the dimension of the space of the original description

1. In the eel (Anguilla anguxlla L.), the dorsal and ventral aortas and the subhepatic vein were catheterized to provide an external circulatory shunt. POO2 in the shunted blood was continuously recorded using a polarographic measuring device. 2. Spontaneous interruptions in the eel's ventilatory activity result in rapid changes in Pα, Oα, O2. The period of these Pα, Oα, O2 oscillations is sometimes less than 1 min. However, the response time of the measuring system is so great under the conditions of these experiments that only slow variations of Pα, Oα, O2 of a period greater than 5 min, are faithfully recorded. 3. In view of the impractibility of technical improvement in the recording system, a data processing method was developed to reconstitute the real physiological variations from the distorted experimental recordings. 4. Through this method of data correction, it is demonstrated that apnoeic or active ventilatory phases in the eel's breathing pattern are not triggered by constant low values of Pα, Oα, O2. Other physiological applications are suggested. Note: Equipe de Recherche Aasociee du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique n 070623

This paper presents selected problems connected with automation of procedures involved in assessment of machine degradation degree using vibration method with special emphasis on the machine state prognosis. The current knowledge of these problems is not sufficient and needs further research on data processing, analysis of efficiency of diagnostic and prognostic procedures, collection and selection of diagnostic parameters and development of automatic procedures for recognition and prognosis of a machine state. New solutions and different aspects of diagnostic prognosis based on the proposed partial procedures focus on factors determining automation of procedures for identification of technical systems states. New automated procedures for acquisition and processing of symptoms indicating the machine state provide better possibilities of control and supervision of technical systems operation and maintenance through identification of their current states, and its good prognosis.

Bayesian method was introduced and leaded into the vehicle fault data processing. The parameter estimation and the selection of the optimal distribution model based on Bayesian method were studied, and an example was given. The references are provided for the application of Bayesian method in the large complicated systems, such as vehicle equipments.

Raman spectroscopy has proved to be a very useful technique in astrobiology research. Especially, working with mobile instrumentation during fieldwork can provide useful experiences in this field. In this work, we provide an overview of some important aspects of this research and, apart from defining different types of mobile Raman spectrometers, we highlight different reasons for this research. These include gathering experience and testing of mobile instruments, the selection of target molecules and to develop optimal data processing techniques for the identification of the spectra. We also identify the analytical techniques that it would be most appropriate to combine with Raman spectroscopy to maximize the obtained information and the synergy that exists with Raman spectroscopy research in other research areas, such as archaeometry and forensics.

“The state of the art” of computer programs, which have been developed for geodetic purposes, is portrayed in the following six papers. Each report has been condensed to give an indication of what the program can do, but no attempt has been made to indicate any detail of the programs. It is generally the experience of programers that a program is never static. By the time one edition has been checked out (“debugged” is the jargon of the craft), the programer has already started to work on the next edition. In this sense, many of the programs that were discussed in October may be superseded before this report is printed. In part, this reflects the rapid change in computer hardware. Computers, themselves, are frequently obsolete soon after they are put into service. Each change of computer requires at least minor changes in programs; more flexibility in programs, in turn, encourages more comprehensive analysis of the data and the selection of alternative formats for output data. In general, a much better job of data processing can be, and is being, done with the help of the electronic computer. It is the consensus that the user of a program must understand it and be capable of modifying it to suit his particular requirements. The dream of a general program into which anyone can feed his data and from which he will get perfect results remains a dream.
