This thesis, the first thesis in theoretical chemistry submitted for the degree of Master of Science at Victoria University of Wellington, has been designed to illustrate two alternative approaches to theoretical studies. The first five chapters illustrate the modern use of operator methods; the last two are concerned mainly with molecular orbital calculations for large organic molecules, using a giant high speed electronic computer. I am deeply indebted to Mr Keith Morris, of the Applied Mathematics Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, for his generous and highly competent help in writing computing programs, and operating computers, at all odd hours of the day and night, for the calculations in this thesis. I would also like to thank Dr R.M. Golding, for useful discussions, and the Director, Applied Mathematics Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, for making computing facilities available.

The paper considers a new method of processing all the necessary surfaces of crops through the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). At the moment, the processing of all surfaces of tall shrubs and individual sections of trees with spot spraying of a chemical liquid on a large agro-industrial scale is not possible due to the imperfection of modern methods of processing agricultural crops. The proposed agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle, due to spot cultivation of crops, is able to increase yields and bring additional profits to agricultural farmers. Ease of operation is the most important advantage of the proposed UAV, for the processing of crops using this UAV does not require special skills, as, for example, when operating agricultural aircraft and ground equipment. Depending on the type of crops and the characteristics of the local landscape, the proposed UAV for agricultural purposes will be spraying in the vertical direction (top to bottom) or at a given angle by changing the position of the lever and its further fixation on the boom, as well as processing in the horizontal plane. The degree of direct human participation in the control and management of the UAV is determined based on the choice of the mode of differential application of fertilizers and pesticides for a given area - stationary or dynamic. In an idealized system, a programmed electronic computer (ECM) in the form of a computer, capable of adjusting the flight and the introduction of chemical reagents in a constant mode, will assume the main role in controlling the movement by analyzing the readings of the instrument sensors. All this can be implemented in practice at the proper level with appropriate funding, and the results of such a project in the future will open a new stage in the sectoral processing of crops and pole crops.

In this note, we focus on some aspects of the use of virtual ethics in the study of the scientific heritage of the outstanding Ukrainian mathematician Mykhailo Krawtchouk and its involvement in the invention of the first electronic computer by Atanasov and Berry. In particular, the biased and clearly propagandistic activity of the Canadian political scientist I. Kachanovsky is analyzed concerning the contrived contribution of Mykhailo Krawtchouk’s mathematical advice to an allegedly substantial solution of the designer G. Atanasov problems of implanting computational algorithms in his designed first electronic computing device. We also noted the ill-considered popularization of these false as well as harmful statements in scientific and popular science Ukrainian literature. Separately, we focused on the openly anti- Ukrainian propaganda activity of I. Kachanovsky, which concerns his clumsy efforts in investi- gating the activities of Ukrainian nationalists during World War II and the last events on the Maidan, and its aggressive dissemination in the press of insinuations, pseudo-historical and pseudo-scientific anti-Ukrainian insults.

The article shows the way to implement a quasilinear mathematical model of flow distribution in pipeline engineering networks that is effective in a wide range of changes in the multidimensional random vector of loads at network nodes and provides reliable determination of the parameters of the probability distribution functions of flows in active and passive network elements. The proposed model consists of determining the matrix of generalized network parameters-the load distribution coefficients along the branches of the circuit, calculated at the point corresponding to the mathematical expectation of the node loads. Based on the obtained model, the convergence of the results obtained with the results of simulation of engineering networks is proved using a numerical experiment on an electronic computer. The effectiveness of the developed model, the corresponding algorithms and a set of programs for an electronic computer is shown - the value of the criterion of reduced costs for parametric optimization of engineering networks can be reduced by 5-7% compared to the methods used in practice. The possibility of obtaining at the design stage the equivalent hydraulic characteristics of engineering networks in the form corresponding to the data of experimental measurements of pressures at the nodes of real complex engineering networks is proved.

The State and Prospects of Discursive-Stylistic Lexicography: An OverviewThis article presents a general analysis of traditional and new lexicography. In doing so, it argues for the relevance of discursive-stylistic theoretical approaches and practices in compiling innovative dictionaries. Using the example of Ukrainian and Polish media dictionaries, the authors describe the evolutionary process of transition from print to electronic (computer) dictionaries, and from descriptive to analytical ones. A survey they conducted among students of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv confirms this process: 84% of the respondents preferred using new dictionaries based on computer technologies. The authors note that the trends observed in Polish and Ukrainian media lexicography are logical in the context of the development of world lexicography. In order to confirm this, they provide an overview of American, German and British media dictionaries. They also describe new Ukrainian dictionaries of the discursive type (e.g. Medialinhvistyka: Slovnyk terminiv i poniatʹ [Media Linguistics: A Dictionary of Terms and Concepts] by Larysa Shevchenko, Dmytro Derhach and Dmytro Syzonov, 2014) and the frequency type (e.g. Novi slova ta frazeolohizmy v ukrains′kykh media: Slovnyk [A Dictionary of New Words and Phraseologisms in the Ukrainian Mass Media] by Larysa Shevchenko and Dmytro Syzonov, 2017). The dictionaries are discussed in the context of the development of Ukrainian lexicography and its interrelation with current European, particularly Polish, lexicographic tendencies. The authors plan to continue developing multimedia dictionaries, focusing in particular on collecting media material and its computer processing. The aim of this work is to expand and further organise a dataset for new dictionaries of the twenty-first century, guided by the discursive-stylistic theoretical approach. [Media-lingwistyka: Słownik terminów i pojęć] Łarysy Szewczenko, Dmytra Derhacza i Dmytra Syzonowa, 2014) oraz frekwencyjnego (np. Нові слова та фразеологізми в українських медіа: Словник [Nowe słowa i idiomy w ukraińskich mediach: Słownik] Łarysy Szewczenko i Dmytra Syzonowa, 2017).
