The human body has vital parameters such as respiration, heart rate, and body temperature. Respiratory rate (RR) is a parameter that expresses the rate of respiration per minute. Respiratory activities play an essential role in human life. The rate of respiration has a particular range, which is 14-18 cycles per minute for a healthy and normal person at rest. The oxygen in the blood enters the body during respiration and is expelled as carbon dioxide in return. Any problems with breathing may pose a serious health risk. An abnormal breathing pattern indicates serious illnesses such as cardiac arrest and hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) and when it falls below a certain limit, it indicates a loss of consciousness. This is why it is so imperative to develop devices and methods measuring respiration rates.

Physiological systems often have emergent properties but the effects of genetic variation on physiology are often unknown, which presents a major challenge to understanding the mechanisms of phenotypic evolution. We investigated whether genetic variants in haemoglobin (Hb) that contribute to high-altitude adaptation in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are associated with evolved changes in control of breathing. We created F2 inter-population hybrids of highland and lowland deer mice to test for phenotypic associations of α- and β-globin variants on a mixed genetic background. Hb genotype had expected effects on Hb-O2 affinity that were associated with differences in arterial O2 saturation in hypoxia. However, high-altitude genotypes were also associated with breathing phenotypes that should contribute to enhancing O2 uptake in hypoxia. Mice with highland α-globin exhibited a more effective breathing pattern, with highland homozygotes breathing deeper but less frequently across a range of inspired O2, and this difference was comparable to the evolved changes in breathing pattern in deer mouse populations native to high altitude. The ventilatory response to hypoxia was augmented in mice that were homozygous for highland β-globin. The association of globin variants with variation in breathing phenotypes could not be recapitulated by acute manipulations of Hb-O2 affinity, because treatment with efaproxiral (a synthetic drug that acutely reduces Hb-O2 affinity) had no effect on breathing in normoxia or hypoxia. Therefore, adaptive variation in haemoglobin may have unexpected effects on physiology in addition to the canonical function of this protein in circulatory O2 transport.

Mortality rate of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is more than 3 million people every year, making it 3rd largest cause of death in the world. It has been estimated that by the year 2030. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will become the third biggest cause of death. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive irreversible airway disease characterized by emphysema and chronic bronchitis, resulting in breathlessness, cough and sputum as the disease progresses, subjects with COPD experience increasing deterioration of their health-related quality of life (HRQOL), with greater impairment in their ability to work and declining participation in social and physical activities. Hence practicing pursed lip breathing exercise in their daily routine will improve their breathing pattern and quality of life. Objectives: To assess the breathing pattern of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient. To assess the effectiveness of selected breathing exercises among the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. To associate the effectiveness of selected breathing exercises among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient with their demographic variables. Materials and Methods: The research approach used for the study was interventional evaluatory approach. The study was conducted in respiratory unit at Wardha City Maharashtra, India, using one group pre test post test design without control group. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used for selecting 60 COPD patients. On the first day pre test assessment of breathing pattern with the help of borg rating scale and provided pursed lip breathing exercise for 20 minutes, 2 times in a day and it was continued for 15 days followed by post test on the 15th day. The data collected, tabulated and analysed in terms of objectives of study using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The mean post test score. The overall comparison of selected breathing exercise among COPD patients at rest pre test score was higher 3.48 with SD of ±1.25 when compare with at rest post test score which was 0.91 with SD of ±0.85.The statistical Student’s paired t test implies that the difference in the selected breathing exercise among COPD patients was found to be 18.98 which is statistically significant at 0.05% level of significance. Also the overall comparison of selected breathing exercise among COPD patients during activity pre test score was higher 7.95 with SD of ±1.50 when compared with during activity post test score which was 2.76 with SD of ±1.02. The statistical Student’s paired t test implies that the difference in the selected breathing exercise among COPD patients was found to be 18.98 which is statistically significant at 0.05% level of significance. Hence it is statistically interpreted that effectiveness of selected breathing exercises among COPD patients at rest and during activity in post test was effective. The tabulated values was much higher than the calculated’ values at 5% level of significance, also the calculated ‘p-value which was much higher than the acceptable level of significance i.e. ‘p’=0.05. Hence the association of effectiveness of selected breathing exercises is statistically not associated with demographic variables. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease patients who practiced pursed lip breathing exercise 20 minutes, 2 times a day for 15 days had improvement of the breathing pattern which was statistically proved. Hence pursed lip breathing exercise was cost effective, non invasive, and highly feasible. Hence the researcher concluded that pursed lip breathing exercise can be practice as an effective intervention on improving breathing pattern among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

AbstractAsthma causes narrowing of the airways, which leads to various symptoms such as whezzing, coughing, and shortness of breath (dyspnea) in sufferers. Patients with asthma often complain of experiencing sudden shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and pain when taking a breath. These conditions can causes the patient to become stressed, anxious and the breathing pattern in no longer effective. As a result, the prognosis of disease is poor. The purpose of this literature review study was to picture the frequency of breathing in asthma patients.This literature review highlighted five articles searched from 2011-2021 throught Garba Garuda and Google Scholar. The obtained articles were apprassied using the JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) instrument before being analyzed. This study revealed that the respiratory rate in patients with asthma increases over 20x/minutes.The conclusion from this literature review is that patients with asthma have tachypnea. This literature review may be used as a reference for hospitals, educational institutions, and other researchers to determine appropriate nursing interventions for asthma patients.Keywords:Asthma; respiratoryrate. AbstrakPenyakit asma dapat menyebabkan penyempitan pada saluran napas dan hal ini dapat menimbulkan gejala seperti mengi, batuk, dan sesak napas (dyspnea) pada penderitanya. Keluhan pasien asma yaitu sering mengalami sesak napas yang dating secara mendadak, sulit untuk bernafas, nyeri saat menarik napas. Hal ini dapat menyebabkan pasien menjadi stress, cemas dan pola napas tidak lagi efektif dan prognosis penyakitnya menjadi buruk. Tujuan dari penelitian literature review ini adalah untuk mengetahui Gambaran Frekuensi Napas Pada Pasien Asma. Metode penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pengumpulan data literature review. Pencarian artikel dari tahun 2011-2021 melalui penelusuran Garba Garuda, dan Google Shcolar dengan kriteria inklusi populasi pasien asma dewasa, tahun artikel 2011-2021, penelitian kuantitatif. Hasil pencarian yang didapatkan berupa full text dan pdf, kemudian direview dengan menggunakan instrument JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute), didapatkan 5 artikel dari tahun 2012-2021, diekstraksi kemudian dibahas dan disimpulkan .Hasil penelitian literature review dari 5 atikel menunjukkan bahwa frekuensi napas pada pasien dengan kejadian asma mengalami peningkatan pernafasan >20x/menit. Simpulan dari literature review ini yaitu pasien dengan kejadian asma mengalami peningkatan frekuensi pernapasan. Penelitian literature review ini diharapkan dapat menjadi refrensi bagi pihak rumah sakit, institusi pendidikan maupun penelitilainnya sebagai pertimbangan untuk menentukan intervensi keperawatan yang tepat bagi pasien asma.Kata kunci : Asma, Respirasi

Heather Henry and Charlotte Wells give an overview of the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of this condition General practice nurses (GPNs) are often on the front-line of respiratory assessment. Dysfunctional breathing (often termed breathing pattern disorder) is a term that relates to changes in breathing patterns. Since dysfunctional breathing can be confused with neurological, respiratory and cardiac disease, this article will help GPNs to understand the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Rowers are especially prone to oral health problems due to the massive consumption of supplements and isotonic drinks that lead eating disorders, due to the need for weight control, and to the development of teeth clenching caused by the constant activation of the chewing muscles during sports activity. Objective: To evaluate the oral health status of a group of Brazilian rowers and to identify the main risk factors influencing their oral health. Methods: One hundred and twenty rowers (84 men and 36 women) with an age of 24.16 ± 5.74 years participated in this study; an average height of 1.79 ± 0.09 cm and body mass of 75.02 ± 11.64 kg were detected by means of a questionnaire focused on the main factors that influence the deterioration in athletes’ oral health. Results: The dental results revealed a significant number of rowers with the oral breathing pattern (46.7%), malocclusion (65.8%), bruxism (33.3%) and noise and/or pain in the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) (20.8%). The use of supplements and isotonic drinks (48.3%) and the incidence of bleeding gums (30.83%) were also found. Conclusion: The results show the importance of making rowers aware of the relevance of oral health and the need for prevention systems, ideally including sports dentistry specialists within the sports medicine departments of rowing clubs.
