Abstract Theoretically, based on a waveguide model, the expression of the tangential stress is formulated for steady, two-dimensional incompressible fluid flow over a flat plate in turbulent boundary layer. It is dependent on some factors, one of them, the behaviour of the last damping mode eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions, that are deduced from solution Orr-Sommerfeld equation by spectral Chebyshev collocation Method. Verification of the latter method is investigated by comparison the deduced formula of turbulent tangential stress with experimental data. In addition to, weight factors in this expression are connected to define the condition of dynamical system solution for multiple 3-wave resonance. This system is solved numerically, and the dynamic invariant is normalized to obtain the time average of the square modulus harmonic, and sub harmonics amplitudes by theorem Birkhoff-Khinchin. Comparison is made between the time-averaged and the phase average for the square modulus of harmonic, and sub harmonic amplitudes that defined on the unit sphere, in the state of multiple 3-wave resonance.

The flow of a viscous model fluid in a flat channel with a non-uniform temperature field is considered. The problem of the stability of a thermoviscous fluid is solved on the basis of the derived generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation by the spectral decomposition method in Chebyshev polynomials. The effect of taking into account the linear and exponential dependences of the fluid viscosity on temperature on the spectral characteristics of the hydrodynamic stability equation for an incompressible fluid in a flat channel with given different wall temperatures is investigated. Analytically obtained profiles of the flow rate of a thermovisible fluid. The spectral pictures of the eigenvalues of the generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation are constructed. It is shown that the structure of the spectra largely depends on the properties of the liquid, which are determined by the viscosity functional dependence index. It has been established that for small values of the thermoviscosity parameter the spectrum compares the spectrum for isothermal fluid flow, however, as it increases, the number of eigenvalues and their density increase, that is, there are more points at which the problem has a nontrivial solution. The stability of the flow of a thermoviscous fluid depends on the presence of an eigenvalue with a positive imaginary part among the entire set of eigenvalues found with fixed Reynolds number and wavenumber parameters. It is shown that with a fixed Reynolds number and a wave number with an increase in the thermoviscosity parameter, the flow becomes unstable. The spectral characteristics determine the structure of the eigenfunctions and the critical parameters of the flow of a thermally viscous fluid. The eigenfunctions constructed in the subsequent works show the behavior of transverse-velocity perturbations, their possible growth or decay over time.

Profiles of the mean velocity have been analyzed in the stream streaking from the region of rotating standard six-blade disc turbine impeller. The profiles were obtained experimentally using a hot film thermoanemometer probe. The results of the analysis is the determination of the effect of relative size of the impeller and vessel and the kinematic viscosity of the charge on three parameters of the axial profile of the mean velocity in the examined stream. No significant change of the parameter of width of the examined stream and the momentum flux in the stream has been found in the range of parameters d/D ##m <0.25; 0.50> and the Reynolds number for mixing ReM ##m <2.90 . 101; 1 . 105>. However, a significant influence has been found of ReM (at negligible effect of d/D) on the size of the hypothetical source of motion - the radius of the tangential cylindrical jet - a. The proposed phenomenological model of the turbulent stream in region of turbine impeller has been found adequate for values of ReM exceeding 1.0 . 103.

In general, this new equation is significant for designing and operating a pipeline to predict flow discharge. In order to predict the flow discharge, accurate determination of the flow loss due to pipe friction is very important. However, existing pipe friction coefficient equations have difficulties in obtaining key variables or those only applicable to pipes with specific conditions. Thus, this study develops a new equation for predicting pipe friction coefficients using statistically based entropy concepts, which are currently being used in various fields. The parameters in the proposed equation can be easily obtained and are easy to estimate. Existing formulas for calculating pipe friction coefficient requires the friction head loss and Reynolds number. Unlike existing formulas, the proposed equation only requires pipe specifications, entropy value and average velocity. The developed equation can predict the friction coefficient by using the well-known entropy, the mean velocity and the pipe specifications. The comparison results with the Nikuradse’s experimental data show that the R2 and RMSE values were 0.998 and 0.000366 in smooth pipe, and 0.979 to 0.994 or 0.000399 to 0.000436 in rough pipe, and the discrepancy ratio analysis results show that the accuracy of both results in smooth and rough pipes is very close to zero. The proposed equation will enable the easier estimation of flow rates.

The behaviour of a fully rough turbulent boundary layer subjected to favourable pressure gradients both with and without blowing was investigated experimentally using a porous test surface composed of densely packed spheres of uniform size. Measurements of profiles of mean velocity and the components of the Reynolds-stress tensor are reported for both unblown and blown layers. Skin-friction coefficients were determined from measurements of the Reynolds shear stress and mean velocity.An appropriate acceleration parameterKrfor fully rough layers is defined which is dependent on a characteristic roughness dimension but independent of molecular viscosity. For a constant blowing fractionFgreater than or equal to zero, the fully rough turbulent boundary layer reaches an equilibrium state whenKris held constant. Profiles of the mean velocity and the components of the Reynolds-stress tensor are then similar in the flow direction and the skin-friction coefficient, momentum thickness, boundary-layer shape factor and the Clauser shape factor and pressure-gradient parameter all become constant.Acceleration of a fully rough layer decreases the normalized turbulent kinetic energy and makes the turbulence field much less isotropic in the inner region (forFequal to zero) compared with zero-pressure-gradient fully rough layers. The values of the Reynolds-shear-stress correlation coefficients, however, are unaffected by acceleration or blowing and are identical with values previously reported for smooth-wall and zero-pressure-gradient rough-wall flows. Increasing values of the roughness Reynolds number with acceleration indicate that the fully rough layer does not tend towards the transitionally rough or smooth-wall state when accelerated.

Abstract A finite element method (FEM) formulation is presented for the prediction of unknown steady boundary conditions in heat conduction on multiply connected three-dimensional solid objects. The present FEM formulation is capable of determining temperatures and heat fluxes on the boundaries where such quantities are unknown or inaccessible, provided such quantities are sufficiently over-specified on other boundaries. Details of the discretization, linear system solution techniques, regularization, and sample results for 3-D problems are presented.

This paper addresses the integral energy fluxes in natural and controlled turbulent channel flows, where active skin-friction drag reduction techniques allow a more efficient use of the available power. We study whether the increased efficiency shows any general trend in how energy is dissipated by the mean velocity field (mean dissipation) and by the fluctuating velocity field (turbulent dissipation). Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of different control strategies are performed at constant power input (CPI), so that at statistical equilibrium, each flow (either uncontrolled or controlled by different means) has the same power input, hence the same global energy flux and, by definition, the same total energy dissipation rate. The simulations reveal that changes in mean and turbulent energy dissipation rates can be of either sign in a successfully controlled flow. A quantitative description of these changes is made possible by a new decomposition of the total dissipation, stemming from an extended Reynolds decomposition, where the mean velocity is split into a laminar component and a deviation from it. Thanks to the analytical expressions of the laminar quantities, exact relationships are derived that link the achieved flow rate increase and all energy fluxes in the flow system with two wall-normal integrals of the Reynolds shear stress and the Reynolds number. The dependence of the energy fluxes on the Reynolds number is elucidated with a simple model in which the control-dependent changes of the Reynolds shear stress are accounted for via a modification of the mean velocity profile. The physical meaning of the energy fluxes stemming from the new decomposition unveils their inter-relations and connection to flow control, so that a clear target for flow control can be identified.
