AbstractMeeting Brazil’s ambitious national commitments on both climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation depends on securing its reserves of forest carbon and biodiversity. Brazil’s ‘Forest Code’ is a key tool to reconcile environmental preservation and agricultural production; it limits deforestation and requires forest restoration in illegally deforested areas. However, not all provisions of the law’s 2012 revision have yet been implemented and some are facing new challenges. Using modelled land use change projections for the whole of the country, we show that full implementation and enforcement of the law has the potential to contribute to conserving biodiversity. Biodiversity outcomes will be especially positive if (i) deforested areas are restored in ways that support recolonization by native species and (ii) additional measures are implemented to protect native vegetation in areas like Caatinga dry forests and Cerrado savannas, which may experience added pressure displaced from other regions by Forest Code implementation.

Climate change and its impact on agriculture and rural communities has been a much-discussed topic among scientists, academics, and the general public. Existing studies have revealed a disconnect between agricultural stakeholders and the wider climatological community in the U.S., which impacts the process of making informed decisions in response to climate related issues in agriculture. This study evaluates college students’ perspectives about global warming and climate change in two agricultural schools located in western Tennessee and western Kentucky, respectively. Data was collected using a Likert scale survey tool and questions ranged from awareness of specific climate change terms, mitigation efforts, and the level of concern for such efforts. Ultimately, this study analyzed differences in students’ perception of willingness to pay for climate change mitigation efforts as affected by demographics, concern about the impact of climate change on agriculture, and existing knowledge about climate change. Among other variables, the need for more information about climate change had a significantly positive impact on the willingness to make a financial contribution to climate change mitigation efforts. This study will potentially enhance existing literature on the future workforces’ perceptions for climate change mitigation efforts, which will in turn provide insights for policy recommendations.

The paper deals with the exposition of the main barriers and drivers of renewable energy usage in rural communities. Climate change mitigation is causing governments, policymakers, and international organizations worldwide to embark on policies, leading to increased use of renewable energy sources and improvement of energy efficiency. Climate change mitigation actions, including the Green Deal strategy in the EU, require satisfying the expanding energy demand and complying with the environmental restrictions. At the same time, the prevailing market structure and infrastructure relevant to the energy systems are undergoing a crucial transformation. Specifically, there has been a shift from centralized to more decentralized and interactive energy systems that are accompanied by a low-carbon energy transition. Smart Grid technology and other innovations in the area of renewable energy microgeneration technologies have enabled changes in terms of the roles of energy users: they can act as prosumers that are producing and consuming energy at the same time. Renewable energy generation that is allowing for deeper involvement of the citizens may render higher social acceptance, which, in turn, fuels the low-carbon energy transition. The collective energy prosumption in the form of energy cooperatives has become a widespread form of renewable energy initiatives in rural communities. Even though renewable energy consumption provides a lot of benefits and opportunities for rural communities, the fast penetration of renewables and energy prosumption encounter several important barriers in the rural areas. This paper analyses the main barriers and drivers of renewable energy initiatives in rural areas and provides policy implications for the low-carbon energy transition in rural areas.
