Abstract This study aimed to determine the effects of different semen diluent on the quality and storage time of liquid semen of Donggala bull. Semen was obtained from four selected bulls which collected using artificial vagina. The semen diluent is based on Tris aminomethane-citric acid with different concentration of glucose namely P1=0.00g, P2=0.25g, P3=0.50g, and P4=0.75g. Another group of treatment also prepared based on Tris aminomethane-glucose with different concentration of egg yolk namely P5=0%, P6=15%, P7=20%, and P8=25%. The data obtained were then analyzed descriptively. Results showed tris aminomethane-citric acid-glucose diluents had sperm progressive motile at >40% until the day 4 of storage, and tris aminomethane-glucose-egg yolk only able to support sperm life for 2 days, and in P8 group shows 41.02% motile on the day 3. In this study, we found the pattern of the increasing of shelf life affect to the decrease rate of sperm viability and normality.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of vitamin C in chicken and quail egg yolk extender on sperm motility in chilled stored bull semen. Semen was collected from the bull with the aid of artificial vagina and six types of extenders were prepared using chicken and quail egg yolk with each extender divided into three aliquots having 0, 3 and 6 mg/mL Vitamin C levels. Bottles containing the diluted semen using the chicken and quail egg yolk °extenders were stored in a refrigerator at 5C over a period of three days and monitored or evaluated at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours. The result showed that there was a general decline in motility of semen as storage time increases, although samples with 6mg/mL Vitamin C levels had better results. It can be concluded that adding Vitamin C in chicken and quail egg yolk 0extender maintained motility of chilled semen even at 72 hours of preservation at 5C.

Dabai (Canarium odontophyllum) or also known as ‘Sarawak olive’ is one of the potential indigenous seasonal fruits commonly found in Sarawak. Due to its high nutritional contents, it has wide potential to be marketed locally and exported internationally. Dabai is very delicate and highly perishable. The shelf life of dabai is usually 3 days when stored in room temperature (27°C). Improper storage and handling lead to the reduction of quality and shelf life of the fruit throughout storage. There is still limitation on the information of postharvest, storage and handling, quality and shelf life of dabai. Studies on quality and shelf life affected by storage treatment and packaging are necessary in optimising shelf life and minimising quality loss of the fruit. This could ensure further potential development of the fruit locally and internationally.

Duck meat is a perishable food that has a short shelf-life. Therefore, packaging is needed to be used tomaintain duck meat quality during storage, one of the ways to extend shelf-life of duck meat is usingpropolis extract as edible coating which is contained antioxidant substances which can be used to extendduring storage. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of propolis extract as an edible coatingmaterial on duck meat to maintain the quality and extend shelf-life of duck meat at room temperature. The research was used a completely randomized design (CRD) factorial 4x3 with 3 replications, consisting of 4 propolis concentrations (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%) and 3 storage times (0 hours, 6 hoursand 24 hours). Duck meats coated with propolis extracts had a significant effect on the water content andantioxidant activity of duck meat (P < 0.05). The storage time had a significant effect on the pH valueand the cooking loss of duck meat (P <0.05). The addition of propolis extract and storage time had asignificant effect on the pH value, cooking loss and antioxidant activity of duck meat (P <0.05).

Recent studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that lysophoshatidylethanolamine (LPE) is able to accelerate fruit ripening while at the same time promoting shelf life. LPE is a natural lipid and is commercially extracted from egg yolks and soybeans. We studied the influence of LPE on the pattern of anthocyanin accumulation and storage quality of cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait. cultivar Stevens). For this purpose 2 x 2-m plots were established in cranberry beds at two separate locations near Wisconsin Rapids. Experiments were conducted in 1997 and 1998 seasons. Plots were sprayed with LPE (extracted from egg yolk and soybean) 3 to 4 weeks before harvest. Spray solution included 200 ppm LPE, 3% ethanol, and 0.1% detergents (either Tergitol or Sylguard). Fruit samples were taken from a part in the plot periodically to determine the changes in the fruit. The rest of the plots were commercially wet harvested with a machine and stored in cold storage. Marketable fruit were counted at various times of cold storage to determine effect of LPE on shelf life of cranberries. In general, application of LPE from both sources resulted in 20% to 35 % increase in fruit anthocyanin contents. Also LPE treatment resulted in 10% to 20% increase in marketable fruit in cold storage. A postharvest dip of cranberry fruit with 50 ppm LPE solution for 15 min also resulted in about a 20% to 30% increase in marketable berries during cold storage. The results of this study shows that pre- and postharvest applications of LPE can add value to cranberry crop including better and more uniform colored fruit, enhance self life, and earlier harvest.

Mamoncillo fruit, which are very perishable, were harvested at mature ripening stage and stored at gas atmospheres containing of 5.1% CO2, 5.6 % oxygen and 89.3% nitrogen, during 17 days at 10 and 15 ± 2 °C. Characteristics studied were the percent soluble solid content, pH, tritatable acidity (expressed as citric acid), reducing sugars, and total sugars. The SST content showed values ranged between 20.37% to 22.30%, which were high values, but did not show significant differences in the treatments. The pH values were between 3.4 and 3.8 and were highly significant in the interaction between temperature and storage time. The tritatable acidity reported values from 0.99 to 2.24 (as percent citric acid), which had similar behavior in the fruit treated or not with CO2. Reducing sugar values were between 7.79 and 17.99 g•100 g-1 (in base to fresh weight), with highest values at higher storage temperature without CO2 atmosphere. Some times these fruit could be sweeter, such as in this case where the total sugar reached the highest values from 12.92 to 20.64 g•100 g-1, resulting in higher value fruit stored during 3 weeks with CO2 treatment at 15 ± 2 °C. Fruit kept good conditions during 3 weeks stored at 15 ± 2 °C.
