ABSTRACTWe have investigated a microstructure evolution of a Ti-48Al-3.5Cr (in at.%) alloy at high-temperatures (>1473K). In the alloy annealed at 1673K for 1.8ks, followed by air-cooling, a characteristic microstructure with a feathery fashion was uniformly formed. From a cooling-rate-controlling study, it was found that formation of the feathery structure is accomplished during continuous cooling from 1673K to 1573K, within the α+γ two-phase region. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the feathery structure is composed of lamellar colonies (5–10µm) which are crystallographicaly tilted slightly (a few degree) with their neighbors. A surprising fact is that lamellae in each colony are mostly the γphase with few α2 phase less than 5% in volume. This suggests that the feathery structure is a metastable product and has not resulted from the α → α+γ transformation above 1573K. Instead, the feathery structure formation should be attributed to the non-equilibrium α → γtransformation which occurs at high-temperatures with a small degree of supercooling. We discuss this interesting phase transformation in terms of the α→γ massive transformation, based on the continuous-coolingtransformation (CCT) diagram constructed for the present alloy.

Electric fields have been applied across oxides growing on a high temperature alloy and control of the oxidation of the material has been demonstrated. At present, three-fold increases in the oxidation rate have been measured in accelerating fields and the oxidation process has been completely stopped in a retarding field.The experiments have been conducted with an iron-base alloy, Pe 25Cr 5A1 0.1Y, although, in principle, any alloy capable of forming an adherent aluminum oxide layer during oxidation can be used. A specimen is polished and oxidized to produce a thin, uniform insulating layer on one surface. Three platinum electrodes are sputtered on the oxide surface and the specimen is reoxidized.

Conventionally cast γ’ precipitation hardened nickel-base superalloys possess well-defined dendritic structures and normally exhibit pronounced segregation. Splat quenched, or rapidly solidified alloys, on the other hand, show little or no evidence for phase decomposition and markedly reduced segregation. In what follows, it is shown that comparable results have been obtained in superalloys processed by the LASERGLAZE™ method.In laser glazing, a sharply focused laser beam is traversed across the material surface at a rate that induces surface localized melting, while avoiding significant surface vaporization. Under these conditions, computations of the average cooling rate can be made with confidence, since intimate contact between the melt and the self-substrate ensures that the heat transfer coefficient is reproducibly constant (h=∞ for perfect contact) in contrast to the variable h characteristic of splat quenching. Results of such computations for pure nickel are presented in Fig. 1, which shows that there is a maximum cooling rate for a given absorbed power density, corresponding to the limiting case in which melt depth approaches zero.

Inconel 718, a precipitation hardenable nickel-base alloy, is a versatile high strength, weldable wrought alloy that is used in the gas turbine industry for components operated at temperatures up to about 1300°F. The nominal chemical composition is 0.6A1-0.9Ti-19.OCr-18.0Fe-3Mo-5.2(Cb + Ta)- 0.1C with the balance Ni (in weight percentage). The physical metallurgy of IN 718 has been the subject of a number of investigations and it is now established that hardening is due, primarily, to the formation of metastable, disc-shaped γ" an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure (DO2 2 type superlattice).

The Ti-6 wt.% Al-4 wt.% V commercial alloys have exhibited an improved formability at cryogenic temperature when the alloys were heat-treated prior to the tests. The author was interested in further investigating this unusual ductile behavior which may be associated with the strain-induced transformation or twinning of the a phase, enhanced at lower temperatures. The starting materials, supplied by RMI Co., Niles, Ohio were rolled mill products in the form of 40 mil sheets. The microstructure of the as-received materials contained mainly ellipsoidal α grains measuring between 1 and 5μ. The β phase formed an undefined grain boundary around the a grains. The specimens were homogenized at 1050°C for one hour, followed by aging at 500°C for two hours, and then quenched in water to produce the α/β mixed microstructure.

Nickel sulfide inclusions have been implicated in the spontaneous fracture of large windows of tempered plate glass. Two alternative explanations for the fracture-initiating behaviour of these inclusions have been proposed: (1) the volume increase which accompanies the α to β phase transformation in stoichiometric NiS, and (2) the thermal expansion mismatch between the nickel sulfide phases and the glass matrix. The microstructure and microchemistry of the small inclusions (80 to 250 μm spheres), needed to determine the cause of fracture, have not been well characterized hitherto. The aim of this communication is to report a detailed TEM and EDS study of the inclusions.

Research on reaction-bonded SiC (RBSiC) is aimed at developing a reliable structural ceramic with improved mechanical properties. The starting materials for RBSiC were Si,C and α-SiC powder. The formation of the complex microstructure of RBSiC involves (i) solution of carbon in liquid silicon, (ii) nucleation and epitaxial growth of secondary β-SiC on the original α-SiC grains followed by (iii) β>α-SiC phase transformation of newly formed SiC. Due to their coherent nature, epitaxial SiC/SiC interfaces are considered to be segregation-free and “strong” with respect to their effect on the mechanical properties of RBSiC. But the “weak” Si/SiC interface limits its use in high temperature situations. However, few data exist on the structure and chemistry of these interfaces. Microanalytical results obtained by parallel EELS and HREM imaging are reported here.
