Studies about subterranean fauna in Latin America were intensified in the last decades. Many research are species description, but other knowledge areas have been studied, such as subterranean invertebrates communities. This study aims to characterize studies about these communities in Latin America countries. We made a bibliographic survey of published papers in scientific journals and bulletins of speleology groups, and different aspects were verified, like localities (country), publish date, number of sampled caves, use of tests and statistical analyzes and sample effort. Of the 20 Latin America countries, we not found those studies for ten (10) of them (Bolivia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, and Uruguay). We accessed a total of 164 published studies, of which the most was conducted in Brazil (69), followed by Mexico (52), Venezuela (17) and Cuba (11). In Brazil, most of studies was published in the last two decades (2000-2017), in Mexico in the 70’s, in Venezuela between 80’s and 2009 and in Cuba in 70’s and 90’s. Except for Brazil, where the most of studies explored the influence of biotic and abiotic factors in the communities, all countries published mainly faunistic inventories about only an unique cave or region. Thus, they do not present tests and statistical analysis and, sometimes, neither ecological discussion. Moreover, many publications do not have information about number of sample occasions and most of Brazilian studies did only one sample occasion. That makes it harder both the ecological approach that permits the verification of patterns that acts in the communities structuring and the comparison of data from different regions. Therefore, although the knowledge of subterranean invertebrates communities has increased, the Latin American has a huge potential to be explored in relation to areas with few or no studies, and to more consistent ecological studies.

Latin American biomedical researchers are increasingly prone to publish their scientific production in indexed scientific journals published in English as this ensures greater visibility and impact, which in turn leads to a greater number of citations. (1,2)This implies that researchers, in addition to writing articles with the utmost rigor and quality in their native language, should also seek a high-quality translation into English to make sure that the article submitted to the editorial process (editorial and peer review) is correctly written, and also that the contents of the source text are expressed in a clear, precise and natural way in the target language, which will undoubtedly increase their chances of acceptance and publication.

Liberation psychology is a theory born in Latin America. This article studies the psychology of liberation in the Scopus database, with the aim of deepening historically on the subject and identify their visibility among Anglos-Saxons scientists. The study is a temporal analysis (2002-2015), in order to know their history, the key players in its creation, authors' greater impact on publications and major scientific journals. Also, it conducted an analysis of production according to the authorities, publications, terminologies, and citations. This study uses as tools data analysis Programs (Createpajek) and display of information (Netdraw). The main results in a universe of 55 papers were: 9 main authors; 3 elite journals that publish more than 41% of the articles; a universe 7 keywords that control the law of the least effort, and the replication of the most cited journals.

The objective of this article is to analyze the distinctive characteristics of research production in the field of communication in Latin American scientific communication journals. Meta-research is necessary because it allows re-evaluating the field and offers new horizons in knowledge production. Two studies were conducted: 1) Bibliometric analysis of 116 journals in eight databases and 24 publications in the Web of Science and Scopus; 2) Content analysis including that of 407 articles over a period of 10 years (2009–2018). The findings demonstrate a research trend in the Latin American region toward international standards, evidenced by a preponderance of empirical over essay studies. Universities in the region published most of the journals in the field and circulation was predominantly biannual. Contrary to expectations, the most widely disseminated topic was health communication, partly owing to a large sample of Brazilian journals. Within the empirical research, the qualitative approach was predominant. The interview was the most widely used research method in the region. Finally, the most used theories were agenda setting and framing. Imminent challenges arise, i.e., to strengthen indigenous theoretical production and to position the region's themes and reflection more decisively in knowledge production at a global level.

This article outlines findings from a case study investigating attitudes toward English as the dominant language of scientific research writing. Survey and interview data were collected from 55 Latin American health and life scientists and 7 North American scientific journal editors connected to an intensive scholarly writing for publication course. Study findings point to competing perceptions (scientists vs. editors) of fairness in the adjudication of Latin American scientists’ research at international scientific journals. Adopting a critical, plurilingual lens, I argue that these findings demand a space for more equity-driven pedagogies, policies, and reflective practices aimed at supporting the robust participation of plurilingual scientists who use English as an additional language (EAL). In particular, if equity is indeed a shared goal, there is a clear need for commitment to ongoing critical self-reflection on the part of scientific journal gatekeepers and research writing support specialists.

Child abuse is a serious violation of the child’s basic rights and the precocious diagnosis of maltreatment cases and early intervention are important for the protection of the involved individuals. Most of the lesions involve the mouth, craniofacial regions, and neck. Therefore, dentists are in an exceptionally favorable position to recognize child abuse. Thus, the aim of the present study, through an integrative review, to guide dentists in the identification and report of children and adolescents’ maltreatment. A review of the literature was performed from secondary sources such as manuals, official documents and articles from scientific journals published in the electronic databases “Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and “Latin American and Caribbean System on Health Sciences Information “ (LILACS). Based on the critical analysis carried out, it is concluded that it is an ethical, legal and moral duty of these healthcare professionals to recognize signs and behaviors indicative of any kind of child neglect, violence (physical, sexual and / or psychological abuse). The suspected or confirmed cases must be reported to the competent organs, aiming at the interruption of violent episodes and ensuring the inclusion of minors in policies that promote their full and healthy development. Keywords: Dentists. Child Abuse. Domestic Violence. The request of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) to the editors of the scientific journals SCIENCE and NATURE not to publish details on the modified H5N1-virus has surprisingly not caused a discussion on censorship within the scientific community (NSABB, 2012a, P.1). This may show that science generally acknowledges the necessity to cut out sensitive data from research results in publications that may serve as a manual for weapons of mass destruction. In this article the policy of the NSABB and the reaction of the scientific community is discussed, as well as the meaning of censorship in dual use research and how an appropriate organisation of future surveillance in sensitive science fields could be organised: To guarantee future undisturbed work in sensitive science fields, the establishment of an internationally organised frame for scientists dealing with dual-use-research is suggested.
