The antioxidant activity of four honey samples from different floral sources (Acacia, Coriander, Sider and Palm) were evaluated with three different assays; DPPH free radical scavenging assay, superoxide anion generated in xanthine–xanthine oxidase (XOD) system and low density lipoprotein (LDL) peroxidation assay. The dark Palm and Sider honeys had the highest antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay. But all the honey samples exhibited more or less the same highly significant antioxidant activity within the concentration of 1mg honey/1 ml in XOD system and LDL peroxidation assays. The chemical composition of these samples was investigated by GC/MS and HPLC analysis, 11 compounds being new to honey. The GC/MS revealed the presence of 90 compounds, mainly aliphatic acids (37 compounds), which represent 54.73, 8.72, 22.87 and 64.10% and phenolic acids (15 compound) 2.3, 1.02, 2.07 and 11.68% for Acacia, Coriander, Sider and Palm honeys. In HPLC analysis, 19 flavonoids were identified. Coriander and Sider honeys were characterized by the presence of large amounts of flavonoids.

Background: Ormeloxifene (Centchroman) is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) which acts as estrogen antagonist and having anti progestogenic activity also. It is being used in the management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding and as nonhormonal oral contraceptive. It is also being investigated for the indications such as osteoporosis, breast and endometrial carcinoma. In this study, we have evaluated the Antioxidant potential of drug by using DPPH and NO synthase Assay. It was found that ormeloxifene has significant antioxidant activity which could be cause for its use in various gynaecological and other conditions.Methods: In this study, we have demonstrated in vitro antioxidant activity of ormeloxifene. DPPH and NO synthase assay tests were done for different concentrations of ormeloxifene.Results: In our study, it showed that the free radical scavenging activity of ormeloxifene was less in lower concentration and increased in the higher concentration in DPPH assay. The free radical scavenging activity of drug ormeloxifene was 22% at 100µg/ml and 27% for the concentrations of 1000µg/ml in DPPH assay. No scavenging activity was 3% at 100µg/ml and 11% at 1000µg/ml.Conclusions: The invitro antioxidant analysis of ormeloxifene, was proved to be a potent antioxidant.

The flavonoids constitute a large group of polyphenolic phytochemicals with antioxidant properties in vitro. The interactions of four structurally related flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, rutin and luteolin) with Cu2+ ions were investigated in terms of the extent to which they undergo complex formation through chelation or modification through oxidation, as well as in their structural dependence. The ortho 3ʹ,4ʹ-dihydroxy substitution in the B ring is shown to be important for Cu2+-chelate formation, thereby influencing the antioxidant activity. The presence of a 3-hydroxy group in the flavonoid structure enhances the oxidation of quercetin and kaempferol, whereas luteolin and rutin, each lacking the 3-hydroxy group, do not oxidize as readily in the presence of Cu2+ ions. The results also demonstrate that the reactivities of the flavonoids in protecting low-density lipoprotein (LDL) against Cu2+ ion-induced oxidation are dependent on their structural properties in terms of the response of the particular flavonoid to Cu2+ ions, whether chelation or oxidation, their partitioning abilities between the aqueous compartment and the lipophilic environment within the LDL particle, and their hydrogen-donating antioxidant properties.

Lupeol (1) and Stigmasterol (2) were isolated from the crude extracts of the stem bark of Citrus macroptera (Family: Rutaceae) for the first time. The n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts were screened in vitro for antioxidant activity using the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. The hot methanol extract showed potential antioxidant activity (IC50: 178.96 μg/ml) whereas the cold methanol and dichloromethane extracts showed moderate activity (IC50: 242.78 μg/ml and 255.78 μg/ml respectively). Mild antioxidant activity was observed with the n-hexane extract of the stem bark of Citrus macroptera (IC50: 422.94 μg/ml). This work reports the antioxidant activity of peptides produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of crude egg white with pepsin. Four peptides included in the protein sequence of ovalbumin possessed radical scavenging activity higher than that of Trolox. The hydrolysate of egg white with pepsin for 3 h was previously found to exhibit a strong angiotensin I–converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity in vitro. The combined antioxidant and ACE inhibition properties make it a very useful multifunctional preparation for the control of cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertension. No correlation was found between antioxidant and ACE inhibitory activities. However, the peptide Tyr-Ala-Glu-Glu-Arg-Tyr-Pro-Ile-Leu, which was a strong ACE inhibitor (50% inhibitory concentration, 4.7 μM) also exhibited a high radical scavenging activity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity-fluorescein value, 3.8 μmol of Trolox equivalent per μmol of peptide) and delayed the low-density lipoprotein lipid oxidation induced by Cu2+ at a concentration of ∼0.16 mg/mg of low-density lipoprotein. Present results support that antioxidant peptides and amino acids not only act individually, but also cooperatively and synergistically.

In an effort to obtain new NSAIDs, that act as COX-2 selective inhibitors with simultaneous iNOS inhibition properties and direct antioxidant activity, we designed a series of 8 new compounds bearing the 5-thiazolyl-carbohydrazon-N-allyl-thiazoline scaffold. The synthesized compounds were physicochemically characterized by: 1H-NMR, MS and elemental analysis. An initial, in vitro, free radical scavenging assay (DPPH bleaching) test showed that most compounds are superior to standard antioxidants Trolox and BHT.

Bergenia ciliata is an essential medicinal plant used in regions where western medicines are inaccessible due to their unavailability and high cost. The methanolic extract of Bergenia ciliataroots was separated for phytochemical elements and in-vitro antioxidant activity. The plant extract showed the rich outgrowth of secondary metabolites that play the role for biological activities. The higher antioxidant functioning of the plant is due to the occurrence of reactive elements like phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant functioning of the plant extract was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bergenia ciliata was found to be 11.21μg/mL, while the IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 45.93μg/mL

Abstract To investigate the effects of extraction solvents and drying methods on Plectranthus hadiensis var. tomentosus quality, eight compounds were isolated and the content of active compounds with their antioxidant activities were compared. Compounds 1 and 2 were known antioxidants, whereas the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-antioxidant activities of compounds 3, 5, 6, and 7 are reported for the first time, with IC50 values of 2.5, 3.8, 22.8, and 53.7 μM, respectively. Our analysis of 30‒95% ethanol extracts from freeze- and air-dried leaves and stems revealed a relationship between extract composition and antioxidant activity. The 95% ethanol extracts of freeze-dried stems (FDS) exhibited highest phenolic and flavonoid content, which were 1.40 and 2.67 times, respectively, greater than those of air-dried stems (ADS), and very high LDL-antioxidant and DPPH radical scavenging activities, which may have resulted from the phenolic ester rosmarinic acid (2), a major component of FDS extracts and potent antioxidant. In contrast, the 95% ethanol extracts of ADS exhibited relatively low antioxidant activity, possibly owing to the low antioxidant activity of the main components ayanin (7) and (+)-plectranthone (8). These results are important for the development of P. hadiensis var. tomentosus as an effective natural antioxidant material.
