Background: Eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance that alters food intake and it is often accompanied by anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or reduced functional capacity and quality of life. Animal-assisted therapies (AAT) have shown benefits in these variables in children and adult populations. Thus, the present pilot study will aim to evaluate the effects of a dog-assisted therapy on the eating disorders symptoms, mental, psychosocial, and physical health, quality of life, and handgrip strength of adolescents suffering from eating disorders. Methods: The current pilot study will involve 32 patients, who will be assigned to a control or an experimental group. Intervention will be conducted once a week for seven weeks. Neither the experimental nor the control group will discontinue their usual care. The main outcome measures will be the eating disorder symptoms and the health-related quality of life measured with standardized questionnaires, while the secondary variables will be anxiety, depression, character, behavior, strength, and body mass. Conclusions: This pilot-controlled trial will be the first to evaluate the effects of dog-assisted therapy on the physical and mental health of adolescents with eating disorders. Significant improvements, in the primary and secondary outcomes, may be expected based on the known benefits of AAT on self-esteem, stress, and self-control in different populations. Finally, although the program is focused on the improvement of adolescents’ health, animal welfare will be a priority in this study.

Aim and Method. To examine in obese people the potential effectiveness of a six-week, two times weekly aquajogging program on body composition, fitness, health-related quality of life, and exercise beliefs. Fifteen otherwise healthy obese persons participated in a pilot study.Results. Total fat mass and waist circumference decreased 1.4 kg (P=.03) and 3.1 cm (P=.005), respectively. The distance in the Six-Minute Walk Test increased 41 meters (P=.001). Three scales of the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life-Lite questionnaire improved: physical function (P=.008), self-esteem (P=.004), and public distress (P=.04). Increased perceived exercise benefits (P=.02) and decreased embarrassment (P=.03) were observed.Conclusions. Aquajogging was associated with reduced body fat and waist circumference and improved aerobic fitness and quality of life. These findings suggest the usefulness of conducting a randomized controlled trial with long-term outcome assessments.

BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes (T1D) impacts more than 165,000 individuals under the age of 20 in the United States. The transition from parent management to parent-child team management, with the child taking on increased levels of self-care, can be stressful and is associated with a deterioration in self-management behaviors. A mobile app intervention, MyT1DHero was designed to facilitate diabetes specific positive parent-adolescent communication. OBJECTIVE To conduct a pilot test to determine the efficacy of the MyT1DHero app intervention. METHODS This pilot study included 30 adolescent-parent pairs in a 12-week single arm clinical trial. RESULTS The final analysis included 25 families. The mean age of the adolescents was 12.281.62 years old. Half of the participants reported a diagnosis of fewer than five years. After 12-weeks, diabetes adherence significantly improved (P=.02) as did quality of life (P=0.01). HbA1c level (P=.51) and family conflict (P=0.14) changed in the hypothesized direction, but the change was not significant. However, higher use of the mobile app was associated with more improvement in HbA1c, (F(1, 20)=9.74, P<.01, R2=.33). Overall, the adolescents were satisfied with app intervention. CONCLUSIONS In a 12-week pilot study of the mobile app intervention designed to facilitate parent-adolescent communication, significant benefits were demonstrated in adherence and quality of life. A randomized controlled trial with a longer intervention is needed to replicate these findings and determine the stability of intervention effects. CLINICALTRIAL NCT03436628

Objectives: This article introduces a new meaning-centered psycho-educational group intervention, called Enhancing meaning in palliative care nursing, designed to support nurses providing palliative care. This intervention aims at increasing job satisfaction and quality of life, as well as preventing burnout in this particular population.Theoretical frameworks: Its format and content are founded on the meaning-centered psychotherapy approach developed for terminally ill cancer patients (Breitbart, 2001; Greenstein & Breitbart, 2000). Frankl's existential therapeutic approach, called logotherapy, serves as the underlying theoretical framework to this intervention.Development: Following the presentation of the context and the development of the intervention, its content is described. Conclusion: A brief description of the ongoing randomized controlled trial testing the intervention is then provided. Finally, the way in which this intervention could contribute to nurses' quality of life and suggestions for future developments are briefly discussed.
