Abstract Population breeding through recurrent selection is based on the repetition of evaluation and recombination among best-selected individuals. In this type of breeding strategy, early evaluation of selection candidates combined with genomic prediction could substantially shorten the breeding cycle length, thus increasing the rate of genetic gain. The objective of the present study was to optimize early genomic prediction in an upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) synthetic population improved through recurrent selection via shuttle breeding in two sites. To this end, we used genomic prediction on 334 S0 genotypes evaluated with early generation progeny testing (S0:2 and S0:3) across two sites. Four traits were measured (plant height, days to flowering, grain yield and grain zinc concentration) and the predictive ability was assessed for the target site. For days to flowering and plant height, which correlate well among sites (0.51–0.62), an increase of up to 0.4 in predictive ability was observed when the model was trained using the two sites. For grain zinc concentration, adding the phenotype of the predicted lines in the non-target site to the model improved the predictive ability (0.51 with two-site and 0.31 with single-site model), while for grain yield the gain was less (0.42 with two-site and 0.35 with single-site calibration). Through these results, we found a good opportunity to optimize the genomic recurrent selection scheme and maximize the use of resources by performing early progeny testing in two sites for traits with best expression and/or relevance in each specific environment.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters among progenies of the CNA6 population of upland rice (Oryza sativa) for grain yield and plant height in four cycles of recurrent selection, in order to evaluate the genetic variability and the genotype × location interaction. The experimental data were obtained from yield trials of S0:2 progenies, which were carried out in the experimental design of Federer’s augmented blocks, without replications for progenies within each location. The effect of S0:2 progenies was significant in all cycles for grain yield and in the first three cycles for plant height, indicating the maintenance of the population’s genetic potential to generate transgressive progenies. The participation of the component of the progeny × location interaction in phenotypic variance was of high magnitude. The genetic variability of the CNA6 population of upland rice is maintained for grain yield and plant height during the four cycles of recurrent selection.

A study was carried out to access the genetic variability in a set of 190 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of rice derived from MTU1010 and BR2655. Plant height and number of productive tillers per plant recorded high PCV and GCV during kharif 2016, whereas number of filled grains per panicle, grain yield per plant, grain zinc concentration and grain iron concentration during rabi 2016-17.The estimates of PCV were slightly higher than the corresponding GCV estimates for all the traits studied indicating that the characters were least influenced by the environment. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was noticed for traits like plant height, number of productive tillers, number of filled grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight, grain yield per plant, grain iron concentration and grain zinc concentration respectively during kharif 2016 and rabi 2016-17 indicating that traits are under additive genetic control, simple selection would likely be effective for further improvement of these traits in desirable direction. RILs J16, J144 and J146 have shown higher grain yield per plant with high iron and zinc concentrations.

Zinc is an essential micro-nutrients for humans and plants. Zinc on humans is obtained from food, especially rice. This research studied the effect of zinc sulfate heptahydrate spraying application, the effect of zinc sulphate heptahydrate enriched urea application, and the interaction of both, on yield and rice zinc grain concentration in Ciherang varieties. The research was carried out by RCBD. The first factor was without spraying zinc sulfate, spraying 75 g ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate and spraying 150 g ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate. The second factor was without zinc sulfate enriched urea, urea enriched by 7.5 kg ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate, and urea enriched by 15 kg ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate. The parameters observed were grain yield, grain zinc concentration, and rice plant growth. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance at 5% and DMRT test at 5%. The results indicated that spraying 75 g ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate increased yield of rice up to 13%, urea enriched by 7.5 kg ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate increased grain yield zinc concentration up to 33%, Combination of spraying  75 g ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate and urea enriched by 7.5 kg ha-1 zinc sulfate heptahydrate can’t increased the yield and zinc grain concentration.<br /><br />Keywords: rice, urea, zinc, zinc sulfate heptahydrate<br /><br />

ABSTRACT - The study of genetic variability in populations undergoing recurrent selection is important to quantify their real potential for breeding purposes. In the present work, three semiexotic maize populations were evaluated on their yield potential and variability for continuing the recurrent selection program. Half-sib families representing three semiexotic populations CRE-01, CRE-02, CRE-03 were evaluated for yield and agronomic traits male flowering (MF), plant height (PH), ear height (EH), ear placement (EP) - ratio = (EH/PH), tassel length (TL), tassel branches (TN), final stand (FS), ears per plot (NE), prolificacy (PR), ear length (EL), ear diameter (ED), ear yield (EY), grain yield (GY). The observed means for grain yield (GY), in percent of the hybrid check, were 93.8%, 89.4%, and 94.6%, showing a relatively good yield potential. Means (cm) for plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) were 221, 237, 241 and 117, 134, 137, respectively, with reductions in relation to the first cycle. Parameters estimates for GY were: additive genetic variance 582.28, 406.70 and 238.11 g2.plant-1; heritability 59.17%, 49.82% and 38.53%; progeny mean basis, and expected gain for progeny selection 8.16%, 6.86% and 3.88%; selection intensity of 20%.Keywords: Zea mays, recurrent selection, semiexotic population, genetic parameters.VARIABILIDADE GENÉTICA E GANHO ESPERADO EM TRÊS POPULAÇÕES DE MILHORESUMO - O estudo da variabilidade genética em uma população sob seleção é importante para quantificar seu potencial para fins de melhoramento. No presente trabalho foram avaliadas três populações semiexóticas de milho quanto ao seu potencial de produção e de variabilidade para continuar o programa de seleção recorrente em curso. Famílias de meios irmãos representando as três populações (CRE-01, CRE-02, CRE-03) foram avaliadas para caracteres agronômicos florescimento masculino (MF), altura da planta (PH), altura da espiga (EH), posição relativa da espiga (EP), comprimento do pendão (TL), ramificações do pendão (TN), estande final (FS), espigas por parcela (NE), prolificidade (PR), comprimento da espiga (EL), diâmetro da espiga (ED), peso de espiga (EY), peso de grãos (GY). As médias observadas para produção de grãos (GY) foram 93,8%, 89,4% e 94,6% da testemunha, mostrando um bom potencial de produção. As alturas médias da planta (PH) foram 221, 237 e 241 cm e da espiga (EH) foram 117, 134 e 137 cm, com reduções em relação ao primeiro ciclo. As estimativas de parâmetros para GY nas três populações foram, respectivamente: variância genética aditiva 582,28 g2 planta-1, 406,70 g2 planta-1 e 238,11 g2 planta-1; coeficiente de herdabilidade em média de progênies 59,17%, 49,82% e 38,53% e ganho com seleção para 20% de intensidade de 8,16%, 6,86% e 3,88%; ganho com seleção para 5% de intensidade de 10,81%, 10,47% e 5,32%, respectivamente para as populações CRE-01, CRE-02 e CRE-03.Palavras-chave: Zea mays L., seleção recorrente, população semiexótica, parâmetros genéticos.

High heritability coupled with high to moderate phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation and genetic advance as per cent of mean was recorded for grain yield per plant, plant height, test weight, fertile spikelet per panicle, total grains per panicle and number of effective tillers per plant. Positive and significant association were observed for days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height, panicle length, fertile spikelet per panicle, total grains per panicle and spikelet fertility with grain yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic level, while highest positive direct effect on grain yield was recorded by fertile spikelet per panicle, total number of grains per panicle, plant height and days to 50% flowering. Based on ten quantitative traits the accessions were clustered into seven groups, the cluster III contained highest 14 accessions, followed by clusters I comprised 11 accessions and cluster VI, VII, V, IV and II have 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 accessions, respectively. Combining ability for grain yield and its component characters in rainfed upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) were studied during Kharif 2014 using half diallel involving ten parents viz., VL Dhan 221, Vivek Dhan 154, VL 30240, VL 7620, VL 30560, VL 8116, VL 8549, VL 8724, VL 8732 and Sukradhan1. Both general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) variances were found to be highly significant for the characters viz., plant height (gca=85.42; sca=23.12), days to 50% flowering (gca=101.61; sca=42.61), days to maturity (gca=90.37; sca=37.73), tillers per plant (gca=4.63; sca=1.38), panicle per plant (gca=2.36; sca=0.90),kernel length (gca=28.88; sca=23.61), kernel width (gca=1.64; sca=1.92),1000 grain weight (gca=3.60; sca=4.91), grain yield per plot (gca=8.57; sca=3.03), fertile grains per panicle (gca=690.67; sca=300.95) and grains per panicle (gca=1050.58; sca=437.75) indicating the importance of additive and non-additive gene actions in the expression of these traits. However, predominance of non-additive gene action was recorded for all the characters. Parents VL Dhan 221, VL 7620, VL 30560, Sukradhan 1 were good general combiners for grain yield and related characters. VL Dhan 221 and Vivek Dhan 154 were good general combiners for plant height and earliness. On the basis of specific combining ability effects, cross combinations Vivek Dhan 154 x VL 8549, VL 7620 x VL 30560, VL 8549 x VL 8732, VL 30560 x VL 8116 and VL 30240 x VL 8116 were the best specific combiner for grain yield per plot and other associated characters viz., plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, kernel length and kernal width.

ABSTRACT In the context of plant breeding programs, it is necessary to evaluate the efficiency of genotype selection over successive years. However, evaluating the genotype selection efficiency is not an easy task, since there is not just a single way to precede it. Besides that, the programs need to be dynamic; that is, they should be able to track the introduction and discard of genotypes each year. As a result, the available data is quite unbalanced, leading to difficulties in certain analyses. Thus, the present study aims to propose some approaches to verify the genetic progress in the preliminary trial of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) upland rice breeding program. We utilized mixed models for grain yield and plant height. Trials were performed with a total of 120 genotypes in seven environments, defined by the interaction between locations and years. Due to the imbalance in the available data, the mixed model approach, i.e., Restricted Maximum Likelihood/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (REML/BLUP), was adopted for the joint analysis. Besides the genetic and phenotypic parameters, the expected gains were also obtained with the selection, genetic progress, renewal rate (RR%), and dynamism of preliminary trials. The efficiency of the selection of superior genotypes per year was verified, with genetic progress favorable for reducing the medium-sized plants associated with high yield.

<p>The objective of this study was to evaluate the combining ability and inbreeding depression of commercial maize hybrids for agricultural traits. Twenty-two commercial maize hybrids, 96 F1 crosses from a partial diallel scheme, 22 S1 populations and 4 controls were evaluated in a 12x12 simples square lattice experimental setup, totaling 144 treatments, in the municipality of Sabáudia (PR), Brazil, for harvests from 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. Three traits were evaluated: grain yield, plant height and ear height. The Griffing method (1956) was applied for the evaluation of the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). The 30B39, 30K64 and 30B30 hybrids showed increased yield, 30F53 and P1630 showed reduced plant height and AG9040 and AG7010 showed reduced ear height. These hybrids can be recommended for the extraction of inbred lines and formation of composites followed by intrapopulation selection. The combinations 30B39 x AG8088, 30B39 x AG9045 and P1630 x AG8021 showed desirable SCA effects for grain yield, plant height and ear height and are recommended for use in reciprocal recurrent selection programs. High magnitudes of inbreeding depression were verified for yield and lower values for inbreeding depression for plant and ear heights. Thus, strategies are recommended for interpopulation breeding accompanied by inbred lines extraction.</p>
