Abstract A time-series of acoustically derived aquatic biomass estimates relies on the acoustic equipment maintaining the same performance throughout the time-series. This is normally achieved through a regular calibration process. When the acoustic equipment changes it is necessary to verify that the new equipment produces a similar result to the old equipment, otherwise an unknown bias can be introduced into the time-series. The commonly used Simrad EK60 echosounder has been superseded by the Simrad EK80 echosounder and the performance of these two scientific echosounder systems was compared using interleaved pinging through the same transducer. This was repeated for multiple transducer frequencies (18, 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz) and from two vessels (Norway’s G.O. Sars in the North Sea and The Netherlands’ Tridens in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean). The broadband facility of the EK80 was not used. Regressions of the grid-integrated backscatter from the two systems were highly linear. The difference in area backscattering coefficients in typical survey conditions was less than 0.6 dB (12%) at the main survey frequency of 38 kHz. In most conventional fish acoustic surveys, the observed differences are less than other sources of survey bias and uncertainty.

The Oseberg jacket was installed at the Oseberg field in the North Sea during the summer of 1987 and the production started on December 1, 1988. On March 6, 1988, a submarine accidentally impacted with the Oseberg jacket. This paper presents results from the evaluation of the importance of the damage to the overall structural safety. A nonlinear progressive collapse analysis is applied for the safety check. The theoretical computations are verified through evaluation of strain and acceleration time series recorded during the submarine impact. The reduction in the overall structural capacity of the jacket was in the order of 10 percent. However, the local member capacity was significantly reduced and it was necessary to remove the damaged member in order to obtain the initial level of safety.

Mr. Deeley tells your readers that he has recently been to the summit of Mont Blanc, and has been studying the difference between névé and glacier ice. This is interesting; but we thought that a great many people had done the same thing during the last hundred years, and we thought that one of them, Forbes, had studied the famous Mountain and the phenomenoninquestion to good effect, not in a casual visit to the Alps, but in the course of many years of patient labour. Among other things we also thought he had shown that in a viscous body like ice, the slope of the upper surface necessary to make it begin to move is the same as the slope which, would be required to induce motion in the ice if its bed were inclined at an angle. He further collected considerable evidence to show what the least angle is upon which ice will begin to move. This is the slope, the least slope, available. It is nothing less than astounding to me that anyone should venture to postulate a Scand in avian ice-sheet in the North Sea until he had considered this necessary factor, and how it would operate.The Scand in avian ice-sheet was, I believe, the invention of Croll, who, sittinginhis arm-chair and endowed with a brilliant imagination, imposed upon sober science this extraordinary postulate. He did not dream of testing it by an examination of the coasts of Norway, or even of Britain, but put it forward apparently as a magnificent deduction. All deductions untested by experiment are dangerous. Thus it came about that the great monster which is said to have come from Norway, goodness knows by what mechanical process, speedily dissolved away on the application of inductive methods. Of course it still maintained its hold upon that section, of geologists who dogmatiseinprint a great deal about the Glacial period before they have ever seen a glacier at work at all; but I am speaking of those who have studied the problem inductively. First Mr. James Geikie, a disciple of Croll, was obliged to confess that this ice-sheet, which is actually said to have advanced as far as the hundred-fathom line in the Atlantic, and there presented a cliff of ice like the Antarctic continent, never can have reached the Faroes, which had an ice-sheet of their own. Next Messrs. Peach and Home were constrained to admit that no traces of it of any kind occur in the Orkneys, or in Eastern Scotland. They still maintained its presence in the Shetlands; however, this was upon evidence which is somewhat extraordinary. I do not mean the evidence as to the direction of the striation, which was so roughly handled by Mr. Milne-Home, but I mean the evidence they adduce that the boulders found on the islands are apparently all local ones, and that, contrary to the deposits of glaciers, they diminish in number as we recede from the matrix whence they were derived.

An analysis of species composition of the zooplankton, macrobenthos (two stations) and demersal fish from Northumberland (north-west North Sea) are reported. The four time-series show synchronous changes in species composition. While some of these changes coincide with changes in climateological variables, others do not. The degree of synchrony implies that either all the time-series are responding to a single set of extraneous forcing factors, or that food chain links, rapidly translate the signal through all ecosystem components.

Abstract. From 2002 to 2005 a FerryBox system was installed aboard two different ferries travelling between Cuxhaven (GE) and Harwich (UK) on a daily basis. The FerryBox system is an automated flow-through monitoring system for measuring oceanographic and biogeochemical parameters installed on ships of opportunity. The variables were recorded in a time interval of 10–20 seconds corresponding to a spatial resolution of about 100 m. The dataset provides the parameters water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll-a fluorescence. There is a longer data gap between November 2002 and August 2003 in the time series due to a change of the vessel in October 2002. The mean annual towing speed of the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) varied systematically between 1946 and 1991. By mounting a pressure transducer on the CPR to record towing depth, it was shown, however, that changes in towing speed did not cause a significant change in towing depth, although the mean towing depth (6–7 m, SD=l-7 m, N=77) was shallower than the previously assumed towing depth of 10 m. Thus the observed changes in towing speed are unlikely to have caused discontinuities in the CPR time-series by affecting sampling depth.Long-term data sets play an important role in attempts to understand the causes of fluctua- tions in plankton abundance. The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey provides multi- decadal information on plankton abundance in the North Sea and North Atlantic (McGowan, 1990), and is one of the longest standing marine plankton abundance time-series. However, while the CPR time-series has great potential, as with all other data sets spanning many years, questions may be asked regarding the consistency with which the data have been collected and hence the true continuity of the time-series.

Abstract Adding information on the horizontal and vertical distribution of fish both on and between trawl stations is reason enough to perform acoustic surveys routinely in tandem with annual groundfish trawl surveys. Ideally, acoustic and trawl density indices could be combined to maximize information on fish distribution and provide more reliable estimates of stock size. The core of the problem boils down to the question: “how does what we see on an echosounder relate to what we catch in a net?” The fuzzy logic “model-free estimation” approach presented here sidesteps the need to understand specific mechanisms that determine the nature and variability of any relationship between acoustics and trawl catches. Fuzzy logic models that describe and predict the relationship linking acoustics and environmental variables (inputs) with trawl catches (output) are developed, and the sensitivities and robustness of the approach are discussed. In the models examined, the static environmental variables location and depth proved to be better predictors of trawl catches in the North Sea than the acoustic energy in the first 5 m off the bottom. We suggest that finding the “hidden” relationship between acoustics and trawls will require closer attention to partitioning the acoustics data by species/assemblages and understanding the key gear and behavioural differences responsible for producing the high between-gear variability.

The fishes harbouring parasites of the genus Lernaeocera can be divided, according to the presence or absence of contact with the coastal waters, into ‘inshore’ and ‘offshore’ groups. According to literature, only L. branchialis occurs commonly on hosts in both groups. The difference between this and the remaining species of the genus is explained by the existence of two different species covered by the name L. branchialis. One of these species is parasitic on cod and whiting, the other on haddock. The two species have also different intermediate hosts (flounder and lemon sole respectively) and differ in morphology of the adult male and female and in the mode of attachment to the final host.Lernaeocera of whiting and cod is distributed mainly in the coastal area, while that from haddock extends over the whole of the North Sea. The former, but not the latter, is present outside the European continental shelf. All these differences lead to the conclusion that the two types represent two different species. The old name is retained for the parasite of cod and whiting. The parasite of haddock is the new species, to which the name Lernaeocera obtusa is given.

Abstract Simmonds, E. J. 2009. Evaluation of the quality of the North Sea herring assessment. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1814–1822. The assessment of North Sea herring has been used to give advice on catch quota for more than 20 years. The data sources comprise acoustic surveys, International Bottom Trawl Surveys, Methot Isaacs–Kidd net post-larval surveys, larval surveys, and catch-at-age data. These sources and their uses are briefly reviewed, and the changes in the weighting attached to each index in the assessment over time are discussed. The performance of the assessment is examined both in historical and analytical retrospectives of spawning–stock biomass and fishing mortality, and in retrospective assessments of numbers by cohort. Increased length of the time-series, the use of a statistical model with appropriate weighting, and a more consistent management strategy have all contributed to the assessment becoming highly stable from one year to the next. The results presented lead to the conclusion that the assessments provide an excellent basis for the management of this stock.
