Effect of Anti-acaricide Treatment on Tick Species Present and Performance of Growing Beef Heifers

Abstract The Edwards Plateau region of Texas is largely used for grazing cattle and small ruminants. Tick parasitism in range livestock can occur year-round with direct production losses manifested as body weight or condition. The objective was to assess two acaricide treatments on the active tick burden on livestock within two forage growing seasons (winter through summer). At the Sonora AgriLife Station, 22 Bos taurus crossbred heifers (248 ± 47 kg) were maintained on 97 hectares of rangeland. Tick burden was assessed by individual animal inspection every two wk from 18-Dec-2019 to 11-May-2020 (Season 1) and from 8-Jun-2020 to 3-Aug-2020 (Season 2). Acaricide treatment was applied each date to heifers chosen randomly to serve in the non-treated control (control: 11 heifers) or acaricide-treated (treatment: 11 heifers) groups. Season 1 acaricide treatment was a pour-on synthetic pyrethroid (11 dates) and Season 2 was a diluted synthetic pyrethroid whole-body spray (5 dates). Tick species observed included Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor albipictus. Tick burden (total counts) and body condition score differences were determined by analysis of variance procedures. For tick burden, there were significant differences (P < 0.0012) between treatment (0.528 ± 0.06) and control (0.819 ± 0.06) heifers in Season 1 (0.673 ± 10.44), and no differences (P > 0.11) between treatment (0.642 ± 0.07) and control (0.799 ± 0.07) heifers in Season 2 (0.721 ± 2.64). For body condition score, there were no differences (P > 0.72) between treatment (5.61 ± 0.04) and control (5.59 ± 0.04) heifers in Season 1 nor Season 2 (5.51 ± 0.005 and 5.80 ± 0.47, respectively). Season 1 acaricide treatment was effective in controlling tick burden (efficacy = 3–4 wk) as compared to Season 2 (efficacy = 1–2 wk). Tick burdens observed under the conditions of this study had no effect on body condition.

The aims of this research were to observed the effect of zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg) and selenium (Se) to the abundance, color and spinnbarkeit of cervical mucus. The materials used 10 Timor deer with BCS (Body Condition Score) 2-3,25, poel 2 and had different estrous phase. The parameters were observed the abundance, color and spinnbarkeit of cervical mucus. The data of abundance and color of cervical mucus were analyzed by Mann Whitney U-test and the data of spinnbarkeit were analyzed by t-test. The treatments were zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and magnesium (Mg) supplementation (T1) on mineral block form and control (T0). The results showed that Zn, Se, and Mg supplementation had no significant effect (P>0,05) to the abundance, color and spinnbarkeit of cervical mucus Timor deer on estrous phase. It was caused by the high zinc level on feed, so the cervical mucus profile had no difference between T0 and T1.Key words : Mineral Supplementation, Cervical Mucus, Timor Deer

This study aimed to compare the effects of 2 inducers of new follicular wave [oestradiol benzoate (EB) or hCG] administrated at onset of resynchronization protocols initiated 22 days after the first timed AI (TAI) of beef heifers. We evaluated the effect of treatments on corpus luteum (CL) development, serum progesterone (P4) concentrations, and pregnancy rates. A total of 467 grazing Brangus heifers, with 24- to 26-months, 320 ± 10 kg of body weight, and 3.2 ± 0.5 body condition score, were utilised. The resynchronization protocol began 22 days after the first TAI (Day 22). Heifers were randomly allocated into 1 of 3 groups: EB (n = 199), hCG (n = 101), or control untreated (n = 167). The EB- and hCG-treated heifers received an intravaginal P4 device (Procliclar, 0.75 g of P4; Hertape, Brazil) and an IM treatment with 1 mg of EB (Benzoato HC, Hertape) or 1000 IU of hCG (Vetecor 5000, Hertape), respectively. On Day 30, P4 device was removed, and the pregnancy diagnosis was performed. At this time heifers had the CL area (cm2) determined by ultrasound and seric P4 concentration evaluated by chemiluminescence assay. The assay sensitivity was 0.1 ng mL–1, and the intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were 7.9 and 10.6%, respectively. Nonpregnant heifers after the first TAI (EB = 97, hCG = 36) received intramuscularly 150 μg of sodium cloprostenol (Veteglan Luteolítico, Hertape) and 1 mg of oestradiol cypionate (Cipionato HC, Hertape). The second TAI was performed 48 to 52 h after the P4 device removal. On Day 62, heifers were submitted to a second pregnancy diagnosis. No effect of the body condition score (P = 0.28) was observed on the first and second pregnancy per AI. Pregnancy rates after the first TAI were higher (P = 0.03) on hCG-treated heifers (64.4%) than EB (51.3%) or the control group (58.7%). The EB group determined greater (P = 0.04) pregnancy rate after the second TAI (49.5%) than the hCG group (22.2%). The cumulative pregnancy rates were similar (P = 0.46) between groups [EB (72.4%) and hCG (68.3%)]; however, both were greater (P < 0.05) than the control group (58.6%). Heifers treated with hCG (3.42 ± 0.76) presented greater CL area at Day 30 (P < 0.05) than the EB (2.44 ± 0.57) and control (2.61 ± 0.61) groups. The treatment with hCG 22 days after TAI determined greater (12.43 ± 3.48; P < 0.05) serum P4 concentrations on Day 30 than the EB (6.92 ± 3.04) and control (7.29 ± 2.45) groups. Therefore, the use of hCG at the beginning of resynchronization protocol 22 days after the TAI increased pregnancy rate following the first TAI. However, the use of 1 mg of EB determined greater pregnancy rate after the second TAI, and no detrimental effects on CL development, P4 concentration, and on first TAI pre-established pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables that contribute to obesity in pet dogs. The working hypothesis was that sports dog owners will better estimate their dog’s body condition and report stronger belief and control over their dogs’ feeding and exercise compared to traditional pet owners. We collected data on 171 pet owners (101 participated in canine sports) for this study. Each owner completed the Dog Owner Attitude Questionnaire. Each dog was measured for percent fat and Purina body condition scale. For the pet dogs, the median Purina body condition score was 6 (too heavy), but for the sports dogs it was 5 (ideal) (p < 0.05 different from pet dogs). The average percent fat for the pet dogs was 19.1 ± 8.6%, and for the sports dogs it was 13.8 ± 5.3% (p < 0.05 different from pet dogs). Among pet owners, 52% were able to correctly estimate their dog’s body condition. Sports dog owners were 57% correct. Pet dog owners fed approximately 60% more per day compared to sports dog owners. Pet and sports dog owners exercised their dog via walking, but sports dog owners reported more activity with the dog, while pet dog owners reported more activity than the dog did by themselves. Overall, pet and sports dog owners put a high value on their dog’s health and well-being, but better education with regard to body condition, feeding and exercise is critical to improve the pet obesity problem.

Intraspecific coalitional aggression is rare among all species, especially within stable social groups. We report here numerous cases of intraspecific lethal gang aggression within stable groups of domestic pigs. The objective was to describe this extreme aggression and to identify potential causes. Management data were collected from farms with (n = 23) and without (n = 19) gang aggression. From one farm, 91 victims were assessed for skin injuries and body condition score. Lethal gang aggression was significantly associated with deep straw bedding, which may be related to various other factors. Gang aggression tended to occur more in winter, and was unrelated to genetic line, breeding company, group size or feed type. It occurred equally in female-only and mixed sex groups (male-only groups were not represented), from around eight weeks of age. Injuries typically covered the whole body and were more severe on the front of the body. Victims who survived had a lower body condition score and fewer injuries than victims found dead. There are still many unknowns as to why this abnormal social behaviour occurs and it deserves further research attention, both for its applied relevance to animal welfare as for the evolutionary background of lethal gang aggression.

Zusammenfassung Ziel der Studie war, den Energiebedarf von Warmblutfohlen zu überprüfen, die durch einen Betriebswechsel beim Absetzen erhöhtem Stress ausgesetzt sind. Material und Methoden: Neun Hengstfohlen, die als Absetzer von verschiedenen Züchtern gekauft und gemeinsam aufgestallt wurden, nahmen an der Studie vom Absetzen im Alter von etwa 6 Monaten bis zu einem Alter von etwa 1 Jahr teil. Das Absetzen erfolgte im heimischen Betrieb oder nach gemeinsamem Transport von Stute und Fohlen bei Ankunft im neuen Bestand. Die Fohlen erhielten Heulage (später erster Schnitt), Hafer und Fohlenaufzuchtfutter. Um eine individuelle Kraftfutterzuteilung zu ermöglichen, wurden die Fohlen zweimal täglich separat angebunden. Erhoben wurden die Gesamtaufnahme der Heulage aller Fohlen gemeinsam pro Tag, die tägliche individuelle Kraftfutteraufnahme sowie in 4-wöchigen Abständen Körpermasse und Body Condition Score (BCS). Ergebnisse: Die tägliche Energieaufnahme der Fohlen betrug 74 MJ verdauliche Energie (68 MJ umsetzbare Energie) pro Tier. Die Fohlen wurden mit vergleichsweise niedrigem BCS von 4,2 ± 0,4 (Skala von 1 bis 9) und einer durchschnittlichen Körpermasse von 285 ± 30 kg aufgestallt. Sie erreichten am Ende der Studie im Alter von 319 ± 22 Tagen eine Körpermasse von 326 ± 24 kg und einen BCS von 4,2 ± 0,4. Die Energieaufnahme der Fohlen war höher und ihre Gewichtsentwicklung langsamer als in einer parallel laufenden Studie mit Fohlen, die im Gestüt geboren und aufgewachsen und dementsprechend beim Absetzen weniger Stress ausgesetzt waren. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz: Fohlen mit relativ niedriger Körpermasse und BCS und erheblichem Stress zum Zeitpunkt des Absetzens benötigen deutlich mehr Energie als Fohlen, die beim Absetzen in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung verbleiben und dadurch weniger Stressoren unterliegen.

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Gewinn epidemiologischer Daten zur Fütterung von Hunden und Katzen in Deutschland. Material und Methoden: 865 Hundeund 243 Katzenbesitzer wurden anhand standardisierter Fragebögen zu ihrem Tier (Alter, Geschlecht, Gewicht, Ernährungszustand, Gesundheit), dessen Fütterung inklusive Belohnungen und Zusätzen, den Gründen für eine Futterumstellung und zur eigenen Person (Alter, Geschlecht, Schulbildung, Beruf) befragt. Die Befragungen fanden in Tierarztpraxen, Hundeschulen, Tierheimen, Parkanlagen und via Internet statt. Zudem wurde der Body Condition Score (BCS) der Tiere durch ihre Besitzer sowie die Interviewerin beurteilt. Ergebnisse: Das Durchschnittsalter der Hunde lag bei 4,8 Jahren, das der Katzen bei 6,8 Jahren. Das Gewicht reichte beim Hund von 2,2 bis 95 kg, bei der Katze von 2 bis 11 kg. Rund 52% der Hunde und Katzen waren übergewichtig (BCS 6–9). Zwischen der Beurteilung der Besitzer bzw. der Interviewerin gab es Differenzen. Viele Besitzer unterschätzten den BCS und erkannten vor allem beginnendes Übergewicht (BCS 6–7) nicht. 58% der Hundeund 90% der Katzenbesitzer verwendeten ausschließlich handelsübliche Fertigfutter, 35% bzw. knapp 10% kombinierten diese mit zusätzlichen Futtermitteln. Knapp 8% der Hundeund < 1% der Katzenbesitzer verfütterten selbst zubereitete Rationen. Ältere (> 7 Jahre) und kranke Hunde erhielten häufiger selbst hergestellte Rationen. Ältere Besitzer (≥ 46 Jahre) tendierten vermehrt dazu, das Futter selbst zuzubereiten, während die Schulbildung und die Berufstätigkeit keinen Einfluss auf die Fütterung hatten. Ein Zusammenhang zwischen Art der Fütterung und BCS bestand nicht. Besitzer mit geringerer Schulbildung sowie Hausfrauen und Rentner hatten häufiger übergewichtige Tiere. Futterbelohnungen erhielten 95% der Hunde und 65% der Katzen. Ältere und berufstätige Besitzer gaben prozentual seltener Belohnungen. Schlussfolgerungen: Übergewicht ist das größte ernährungsbedingte Problem. Im Vergleich zu früheren Studien hat sich die Zahl übergewichtiger Tiere erhöht. Klinische Relevanz: Tierbesitzer sollten frühzeitig auf Übergewicht hingewiesen werden, da sie den Beginn der Adipositas häufig nicht wahrnehmen. Die meisten Tierbesitzer verabreichen Belohnungen, was bei Diäten berücksichtigt werden muss.
