Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the concordance of results of blood and tissue cultures in patients with pyogenic spondylitis. Methods We searched the patients with pyogenic spondylitis in whom micro-organisms were isolated from both blood and tissue cultures by retrospective review of medical records in three tertiary university-affiliated hospitals between January 2005 and December 2015. The species and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates from blood and tissue cultures were compared with each other. Results Among 141 patients with pyogenic spondylitis in whom micro-organisms were isolated from both blood and tissue cultures, the species of blood and tissue isolates were identical in 135 patients (95.7%, 135/141). Excluding the four anaerobic isolates, we investigated antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 131 isolates of same species from blood and tissue cultures. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns were identical in 128 patients (97.7%, 128/131). The most common isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (86 patients; 85 concordant and 1 discordant), followed by streptococcus (24 patients; 22 concordant and 2 discordant), and Escherichia coli (8 patients; all concordant). Conclusion We suggest that a positive blood culture from patients with pyogenic spondylitis could preclude the need for additional tissue cultures, especially when S. aureus and streptococcus grew in blood cultures. Background Surgical site infections are ranked among the most common health care associated infections. They cause significant morbidity, increased cost of care and prolonged hospital stay. A spectrum of microorganisms with varied antimicrobial susceptibility patterns have been identified as causative agents of SSI which vary with time, hospital, and with the type of surgical procedure performed. We conducted this study with an objective to assess the burden of SSI, its causative aerobic bacteria and their in vitro antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Aims & objectives 1) To identify the aerobic bacteriological profile of isolates causing surgical site infections. 2) To determine the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of the isolates. Method: This study includes 266 clinically diagnosed cases of SSIs over a period of 8 months. Isolates were identified by conventional methods. Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were tested for methicillin resistance by cefoxitin. Isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae which showed resistance to cefotaxime and ceftazidime were tested for ESBL production by CLSI guidelines. Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were screened for MBL production using Imipenem disc diffusion test. Results of the 266 samples processed, 193(72.5%) were culture positive samples which yielded 204 isolates. Staphylococcus aureus 60 (29.4%) was found to be the predominant organism causing SSI followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa 40 (19.6%). Methicillin resistance was observed in 12 (20%) of Staphylococcus aureus strains. ESBL production was observed in 20.5% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates and 13.2 % Escherichia coli isolates. MBL production was not seen Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Conclusion: The present study showed the commonest bacteria responsible for the surgical site infections like Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Hence Implementation of an effective infection control programme and judicious use of antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the incidence of SSI in the hospital.

Background. Bacterial sepsis is a major cause of illness in human immunodeficiency virus infected patients. There is scarce evidence about sepsis among HIV patients in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the etiologic agents of bacterial sepsis and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns among HIV infected patients.Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out from March 1 to May 2, 2013. One hundred patients infected with HIV and suspected of having sepsis were included. Sociodemographic data were collected by interview and blood sample was aseptically collected from study participants. All blood cultures were incubated aerobically at 35°C and inspected daily for 7 days. The positive blood cultures were identified following the standard procedures and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using disk diffusion technique. Data was entered by Epi-info version 3.5.1 and analysis was done using SPSS version 20.Results. Of the study participants, 31 (31%) confirmed bacterial sepsis. The major isolates were 13 (13%)Staphylococcus aureus, 8 (8%) coagulates negative staphylococci, and 3 (3%) viridans streptococci. Majority of the isolates, 25 (80.6%), were multidrug resistant to two or more antimicrobial agents.Conclusions. Bacterial sepsis was a major cause of admission for HIV infected patients predominated byStaphylococcus aureusand coagulase negative staphylococci species and most of the isolates were multidrug resistant.

Abstract Background Globally, surgical site infections are the most reported healthcare-associated infection and common surgical complication. In developing countries such as Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published reports on the microbiologic profile and resistance patterns of an isolates. Objective This study aimed at assessing the bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates among patients diagnosed with surgical site infection at Jimma Medical Center in Ethiopia. Methods A prospective cohort study was employed among adult patients who underwent either elective or emergency surgical procedures. All the eligible patients were followed for 30 days for the occurrence of surgical site infection (SSI). From those who developed SSI, infected wound specimens were collected and studied bacteriologically. Results Of 251 study participants, 126 (50.2%) of them were females. The mean ± SD age of the patients was 38 ± 16.30 years. The overall postoperative surgical site infection rate was 21.1% and of these 71.7% (38/53) were culture positive. On gram stain analysis, 78% of them were Gram-negative, 11.5% were Gram-positive and 10.5% were a mixture of two microbial growths. Escherichia coli accounted for (21.43%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (19.05%), Proteus species (spp.) 14.29%), Staphylococcus aureus (11.90%), Klebsiella species (11.90%), Citrobacter spp. (9.5%), streptococcal spp. (7.14%), Coagulase-negative S. aureus (CoNS) (2.38%) Conclusion Gram-negative bacteria were the most dominant isolates from surgical sites in the study area. Among the Gram-negative bacilli, Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria causing surgical site infection. As there is high antibiotic resistance observed in the current study, it is necessary for routine microbial analysis of samples and their antibiogram.
