No discussion of irreproducible science would be complete without at least a brief consideration of what happens when scientists go a step or two beyond questionable research practice (QRP)-driven research. So, continuing the metaphor of scientific journeys, Robert Park’s iconic book title, Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud, encapsulates the interdisciplinary examples of what Irving Langmuir (a Nobel Prize recipient in chemistry) termed pathological science more than 65 years ago. The chapter discusses more recent examples of this phenomenon in some detail from both the physical sciences (cold fusion) and their sociobehavioral counterparts (the Daryl Bem psi episode). The latter (undoubtedly a virtual mentee of Joseph Banks Rhine whose exploits were exposed by Professor Langmuir) is given more prominence here because of its influence on the genesis of reproducibility crisis itself.

AbstractSorana Ţopa’s Journal, whose manuscript was donated by Mrs. Lucreţia Angheluţă to “George Enescu” National University of Arts, is not just an unsettling testimony of the qualms that marked the actress’ life, but also an essayistic guide, which can lead us to ourselves. The fragments we have chosen – dated October 31st 1971, November 5th 1971, November 9th 1971 and November 14th 1971 – help us understand that she lived under the sign of empathy; her angsts were generated by the worry for others and the deterioration of man’s relationship with nature. The events of the day go through the filter of reflection on human destiny, seen as a journey between self and ego. Her pages are a plea for a life lived in harmony with oneself and others, an invitation to abandon frivolity, egoism, and to re-establish non-negotiable value axes (“It means not allowing yourself to trade with them”); a return to the natural matrix. But how many of us are able or willing to do this?I am reading and I am shaken by the actuality of her words, of her vision on (ir)responsibility, survival, humanity; and all these starting from our attitude when we suffer from... “a trivial flu”. I have the feeling that I’ve opened a window into time, to receive a deep warning signal about a trap swallowing us: “An almost bestial, animal-like attention – regarding physical survival, this we know, yes, and we fully feed it. But God forbid the winds of the unforeseeable blow and stir deeper than the surface the murky waters of our consciousness, as our attention doesn’t instantly grow in a significant way! Do not stir dead waters – is a book title that would have tempted me at some point.” Questions spring from between the lines, with the sound of shards.Sorana Ţopa’s Journal shows us a broken mirror of our prejudices and nothingness, it urges us to feel the smell of “self-awareness”, to accept that life cannot be lived from the outside, or in pieces. Reading her testimonies and confessions must be done in the key of responsibility and accountability, of recovering spiritual dimension.Sorana Ţopa remains a still insufficiently known actress; perhaps the road to understanding the thoughts she laid on paper is longer than it seems, the vibrations are on another frequency, and the meaning... different. Comments can only push us even further away; “the cinder of words can hurt”. Perhaps the silent, interiorized, multiplied reading will draw us closer, giving some meaning to the liquefied passage of time.

The Nobel Prize winning Physicist, Eugene Wigner, famously posed a powerful challenge (1960) by asking why is mathematics so effective, especially in the physical sciences. It is possible that the reason for the effectiveness of mathematics is not because mathematics is in any way causative, but instead because mathematics studies the structure of logical possibility and constraint. When plugged into a possible world, mathematics gives us the tools to analyze the logically possible outcomes. Therefore, when a possible world that is expressed mathematically sufficiently aligns with reality, mathematics becomes effective at expressing relationships and outcomes.

I consider it a great honour and privilege to have been invited to deliver the second Blackett Memorial Lecture organized under the joint sponsorship of the Royal Society and the Indian National Science Academy. I would like to express at the outset my gratitude to both Societies for providing me with this unique opportunity. It so happens that I have spent the last three decades of my life doing research in the field of cosmic radiation, a good fraction of which has been done with cloud chambers. Because of both these reasons, as you can easily imagine, I have been to a great extent personally influenced and inspired by P. M. S. (Lord) Blackett, whose pioneering and outstanding contributions in the field of cosmic radiation with counter controlled cloud chambers which brought him the Nobel Prize in 1948, are well known.

In Malaysia, the Road Transport Department (RTD) is one of the public sectors facing the issue of having excessive waiting times at their service counter. Various alternatives have been proposed to address this problem, such as implementing an e-government service via the official RTD portal and creating other units so that the demand can be segregated, which also involves the creation of other agencies including myEG and UTC. However, the problem has persisted and has even become one of the most urgent policy issues that plague the RTD. Thus, this study aims to propose an online system that will help manage queue during the service and therefore optimise the waiting time. Several methods were employed to achieve the objectives, including conducting semi-structure interview, observation, and time study at RTD Bukit Katil, Melaka, developing the online system with Adobe Dream Weaver, Oracle SQL Developer software, and Adobe Cold Fusion, and validating and verifying the system using usability studies and questionnaires. The first online system involves an online queue number booking system. With this developed system, clients can use an online system to book their queue number. Furthermore, this system provides clients with the duration of the waiting time so that they can be present at the counter in time before their assigned service. The second proposal involves utilising an online queue booking system. With this system, clients can book their appointment according to the specific time with the RTD staff. This system also makes it possible for the client to come and to be serviced on time. This system aims to optimise the waiting time at the RTD, improve customer satisfaction, and serve as a reference for other government agencies so that their services can be improved
