Migration is a particularly controversial topic in the contemporary world, with an increasing number of migrants facing a backlash in rhetoric as well as the policies of immigrant-receiving countries. This chapter explores the complexities of this dynamic—the contested nature of migrant categories as well as the very notion of a ‘migrant crisis. It examines these in the context of the past five years and in light of two particular cases—the global response to the number of Syrian refugees fleeing that country’s conflict, and the history of US refugee resettlement policies.
