In library and information science (LIS), research on interdisciplinarity is concerned with optimizing information resources, systems, and services for researchers working across disciplinary boundaries. Research libraries are responding to the rapid rise in interdisciplinary scholarship and the advances in digital content, technologies, and infrastructure that accompany an emerging data-intensive research paradigm. This chapter considers two key areas in LIS that inform current practice in research libraries—bibliometrics and information practices research. Bibliometric approaches investigate the patterns and flows of information among disciplines, and information practices research examines the activities and materials involved in the conduct of interdisciplinary work. As technical advances continue to solve problems in navigation and retrieval of information across disciplinary boundaries, the greatest challenge will be to assure the meaning and validity of newly created interdisciplinary knowledge through information systems that can sustain the increasingly long and mutable information paths back to our disciplinary intellectual foundations.

Straipsnyje aptariamos galimybės rengti bibliotekininką edukatorių, kuris galėtų ugdyti informacinio raštingumo gebėjimus. Pagrindinis dėmesys skiriamas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo studijų metu analizei. Siekta įvertinti, kiek profesionalius bibliotekininkus rengiančiose Informologijos (Klaipėdos universitetas), Bibliotekininkystės ir informacijos (Vilniaus universitetas) bei Bibliotekos informacijos išteklių valdymo (Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija) studijų programose ugdomi gebėjimai atitinka bibliotekininkui edukatoriui būdingą gebėjimų visumą. Studijų programos analizuotos remiantis Instruktuojančių bibliotekininkų ir koordinatorių kvalifikacinių įgūdžių standartais. Tyrimo duomenų analizei naudota faktorių analizė. Tyrimo duomenys leidžia daryti išvadą, kad Informologijos, Bibliotekininkystės ir informacijos bei Bibliotekos informacinių išteklių valdymo studijų programos atitinka daugelį standartuose numatytų kriterijų, tačiau šių studijų programų atitikties standartams vidurkiai skiriasi. Labiausiai standartus atitinka Vilniaus universiteto studijų programa.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: bibliotekininkas edukatorius, informacinis raštingumas, profesiniai standartai, faktorių analizė, bibliotekininkystė, studijų programų analizė.Education Opportunities for Librarian as Educator: the Case of LithuaniaVincas Grigas Summary The article discusses whether the study programmes aimed at preparing professional librarians produce the entirety of competencies necessary for librarians as educators. The research aims to evaluate how the study curricula such as informology (Klaipėda University), library information resources management (Šiauliai State College), library and information studies (Vilnius University) are relevant to the professional standards of librarians as educators. For the research were used the standards for Proficiencies for Instruction librarians and coordinators prepared by the Association of College and Research Libraries. For data analysis factor analysis was used. The research proved that the Standards for Proficiencies for Instruction Librarians and Coordinators and factor analysis may be an appropriate method for the assessment of the study programmes designed for preparing future professional librarians, i.e., in evaluating whether the competencies developed under the study programme correspond to the entirety of the competencies peculiar to librarians as educators. The study findings suggest that study programmes such as informology, Library and information science, and library information resources management meet most of the standards criteria. The Vilnius University study programme meets them best. Keywords: librarian as educator; information literacy; instruction; professional standards; factor analysis; librarianship; study programmes analysis.

En çok atıf yapılan dergiler sıralamasında Türk Kütüphaneciliği, Resmî Gazete, College & Research Libraries, Library Trends, Library Journal, Journal of the American Society for Information Science ve Unesco Bulletin for Libraries dergileri başta gelmektedir. Toplam atıfların %32’si 4, %67’si 38 dergide yayımlanan makalelere yapılmıştır. Yabancı dergilere yapılan atıfların dağılımı Bradford’un Saçılım Yasasına uygunluk göstermektedir. Tezlerde atıf yapılan kaynakların yarı yaşamı (half-life) dokuz yıldır. Yüksek lisans tezlerinde atıf yapılan kaynaklar doktora tezlerinde atıf yapılan kaynaklardan daha gençtir. Tezlerde atıf yapılan kaynakların büyük bir çoğunluğu tek yazarlıdır. Araştırmada elde edilen bibliyometrik bulgular kütüphane koleksiyonlarının değerlendirilmesinde ve kütüphanecilik alanında çekirdek dergi koleksiyonu oluşturulmasında kullanılabilir.

PurposeThis literature review aims to identify conscious, intentional, repetitive and transferrable information-related decisions and activities (i.e. information practices) for individuals to alleviate their information vulnerability. Information vulnerability refers to the lack of access to accurate, affordable, complete, relevant and timely information or the inability to use such information, which can place individuals, communities or society at disadvantage or hurt them.Design/methodology/approachConceptual literature review.FindingsThis review presents seven conscious, intentional, repetitive and transferrable information practices to alleviate information vulnerability.Practical implicationsDue to the transferability potential of the seven information practices, diverse populations in varied contexts could refer to, adapt and benefit from appropriate combinations of information practices and their manifestations. The framework can be used by individuals for alleviating information vulnerability. Thus, this paper responds to the call for conducting action-driven research in information science for addressing real-world problems. Information professionals can help individuals select and implement appropriate combinations of seven information practices for alleviating information vulnerability.Originality/valueWe propose (1) a parsimonious, episodic framework for alleviating information vulnerability, which depicts the inter-relationship among the seven information practices and (2) a three-dimensional plot with information access, use and value as three axes to map the manifestation and outcome of alleviating information vulnerability.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based systems used to store and manipulate geographical data, and perform spatial analysis. These systems serve to reveal the patterns, relationships, and anomalies, or sometimes invisible characteristics of the geographical data in various applications. While the term “GIS” indicates an object or tool, GIScience, the acronym for Geographic Information Science, covers a broader context of methodologies behind spatial data analysis. Among different application areas of GIS, “environmental monitoring and modeling” plays a significant role in the development of the very first GIS in the world-The Canada Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) in the mid-1960s. After almost 40 years of history, significant changes and challenges took place in the geographic information research agenda. This chapter will point out some of the vital tools and methods used in GIScience (including GIS, remote sensing and 3D modeling) to grasp issues of our urban environments. With recent technological advances that facilitate our understanding of the environment; it is more evident that the vision of more “livable” cities is not too far but not easy as well.

When new employees join an organization, a great deal of information must be provided to support their success. While clarifying job duties, outlining operational procedures, and reviewing benefits details are priorities, integrating employees into the culture of the organization is perhaps the most critical, and most often overlooked, aspect of orientation programs. In the ever-expanding field of information science and knowledge management, it is imperative that organizations provide comprehensive orientation programs that not only welcome new employees but successfully integrate them to their long-term contributions to the organization and the profession. This chapter examines the importance of orientation programs and discusses how current orientation programs in several academic and research libraries are effectively focusing on organizational culture and employee integration.

This article explores the use of the Institute for Scientific Information’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for journal management in academic libraries. The advantages and disadvantages to using JCR citation data for journal management are outlined, and a literature review summarizes reported uses of these data by libraries and scholars. This study researches the impact of journal self-citation on JCR rankings of library and information science (LIS) and genetics journals. The 1994 rankings by impact factor and total citations received were recalculated with journal self-citations removed; then the recalculated rankings were compared to the original rankings to analyze the effect of self-citations. It is concluded that librarians can use JCR data without correcting for journal self-citation, although self-citations do exert a major effect on the rankings for a small number of journals.
