ABSTRACTSeeding from bulk silicon (lateral epitaxy) has been used in Ar+ laser recrystallization to achieve subboundary free silicon on insulator areas. On these areas C.MOS devices have been performed using almost entirely the standard processing steps of a bulk micronic C-MOS technology. n -MOS transistors with channel length as small as 0.3 um have shown very small leakage currents. This is attributed especially to the lack of subboundaries. A 40 % increase in the dynamic performances in comparison with equivalent size C-MOS bulk devices has been obtained (93 ps of delay time per stage for a 101 stages ring oscillator with 0.8 μm of channel length). This is the best result presented so far on recrystallized SOI. No special requirements are needed in the lay out of the circuit with the chosen seed structure. Furthermore an industrial processing rate for the laser recrystallization processing has been achieved using an elliptical laser beam, a high scan velocity (30 cm/s) and a 100 μm line to line scan step (a 4' wafer in 4 minutes).

The flower of Strelitzia reginae generates abundant and viscous mucilage as exudate, which is purified in periods of heating–cooling, and finally precipitated with ethanol, obtaining strelitzia gum (StrG). By means of intrinsic viscosity measurement, the viscometric molecular weight (MWv) is determined, with a value of 200,000 g/mol, as well as a hydrodynamic radius of 20 ± 1 nm and a hydration value of 445 ± 34 g/g. The size of StrG was compared against dynamic light scattering data with a value of 16 ± 2 nm and a MWDLS of 230,000 g/mol. StrG is a biopolyelectrolyte with an “a” value of 0.85, which corresponds to a flexible behavior with a great effect of volume exclusion. This statement is based on the difficulty of gum dissolution, that should be performed at 80 °C. This macromolecule is very promising and can potentially be used in several industrial applications, such as in film forming, and as a gel, thickener, and coemulsifier.

AbstractSeveral studies showed that seeding of solutions of monomeric fibril proteins with ex vivo amyloid fibrils accelerated the kinetics of fibril formation in vitro but did not necessarily replicate the seed structure. In this research we use cryo-electron microscopy and other methods to analyze the ability of serum amyloid A (SAA)1.1-derived amyloid fibrils, purified from systemic AA amyloidosis tissue, to seed solutions of recombinant SAA1.1 protein. We show that 98% of the seeded fibrils remodel the full fibril structure of the main ex vivo fibril morphology, which we used for seeding, while they are notably different from unseeded in vitro fibrils. The seeded fibrils show a similar proteinase K resistance as ex vivo fibrils and are substantially more stable to proteolytic digestion than unseeded in vitro fibrils. Our data support the view that the fibril morphology contributes to determining proteolytic stability and that pathogenic amyloid fibrils arise from proteolytic selection.

Abutilon is an important medicinal plant. Its various plant parts such as leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds were used to treat various diseases and ailments from the ancient time. Present work deals with the investigation of three species of Abutilonviz. Abutilon indicum, Abutilon pannosumand Abutilon ramosum with a view to study macro morphological variations and to identify a set of diagnostic characters for individual Abutilon species. Distinct variations exist in stem surface and colour, leaf shape and size, flower diameter, fruit colour, shape and size, number of mericarps per fruit and seed structure. All these macromorphological variations were helpful in identification and delineation of the plant species.

Scolopia zeyheri (Nees) Harv. is a widespread African tree and a member of the largest genus of the tropical Old World tribe Scolopieae (Salicaceae sensu lato). This light microscopic study is the first report on ovule and seed structure in the genus and the tribe. Ovules vary from four to six per ovary, are anatropous. crassinucellate. bitegmic and occur in an epitropous (rarely pleurotropous). median-parietal position in the unilocular, usually bicarpellate ovary. A very extensive nucellus cap. comprising nucellus epidermal derivatives and parietal tissue, characterizes the young ovule during mega- sporogenesis and megagametogenesis, but the chalazal nucellus is poorly developed. During meiosis. the micropvlar dyad cell degenerates early. The functional dyad cell forms two megaspores of which the chalazal one usually develops into a Polygonum-type embryo sac. At maturity, the micropylar end of the embryo sac is covered by the remnants of the nucellus epidermis, the parietal tissue having degenerated. The globular embryo has a short suspensor and lies in nuclear endosperm becoming cellular. The seed coat develops from both integuments, is tannimferous. has a glabrous surface with stomata and a single layer of exotegmic, longitudinal fibres.Results are compared with relevant information previously reported for genera in the tribes Flacourtieae. Samvdeae. Saliceae, Scyphostegiae and for Oncoha Forssk. (Salicaceae sensu lato). Embryologically Scolopia shows a number of ple- siomorphic features compared to other Salicaceae. For example, it lacks an extranucellar embryo sac. an apomorphic fea­ture in many Salicaceae. A summary of ovule and seed characters in Salicaceae sensu lato is given and contrasted with data available for Achariaceae  sensu lato. Embryological data broadly supports the reclassification of genera, traditionally referred to Flacourtiaceae. amongst Salicaceae sensu lato and Achariaceae sensu lato.
