Abstract This article looks at the creation of a network of researchers of social issues in nanotechnology and the role of the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University (CNS-ASU) in the creation of this network. The extent to which CNS-ASU is associated with the development of a research network around the study of social issues in nanotechnology is examined through geographic mapping of co-authors and citations of center publications, network analysis of co-authors of papers on social issues in nanotechnology, and a disciplinary analysis of these papers. The results indicate that there is an extensive network of co-authorships among researchers studying social issues in nanotechnology with CNS-ASU at the center of this network. In addition, papers written by center members and affiliates integrate a diverse range of disciplines. Qualitative data are used to interpret some of the ways that citation occurs.

This chapter considers the role of pride and shame in creating, maintaining and disrupting practices that have resulted in child and family social work. As people sought to develop ways of addressing social issues related to children and families, different discourses on children, families and social issues provided competing and conflicting messages about what was praiseworthy and shameful behaviour. Different representations of social work practice can, therefore, be seen to have been constructed within these competing discourses. This chapter outlines these representations as social administration, social policing, activism, therapy and practical help, demonstrating how pride and shame were central components in how these practices were institutionalised. This chapter then analyses how a discourse of neoliberalism has sought to change the boundaries for praiseworthy and shameful behaviour to reconfigure professional practice.

The transformation of the role of judges in criminal cases needs to be considered to prioritize the return of state financial losses in the perspective of the usefulness of the law. This study uses a descriptive study with qualitative data analysis. This study answers the questions of how is the implementation of the role of judges in criminal cases in Indonesia; and what is the role of judges in criminal cases in the perspective of justice, usefulness and legal certainty. The creation of laws that serve the interests of the State cannot be separated from the role of judges. Therefore, the role of judges is important to transform that the core in the creation of laws is the harmonious implementation of values and principles which are then manifested in the behavior of the "pattern setting group" which can be interpreted as a group of experts. The power of law in the narrow sense is the judge.

In a study conducted in 2008–2009, 25 employed homeless women in Calgary, Canada, were interviewed to gain a better understanding of their pathways from homelessness. The data analysis uncovered a mix of personal and societal issues to consider and provides a framework for understanding the complexity of sociocultural factors that contribute to the vulnerability of users of services. In combination, these many sociocultural factors affected the participants’ personal exit from homelessness. The role of service delivery organizations in helping to identify vulnerabilities experienced by service users and respond to these issues in practice will have an influence on resolving social issues like homelessness.

Renaissance dramas mostly illustrate gender relations and women’s complex roles of empowerment. Writers of that time examined the social issues of this day through dramas that usually featured a strong female character at the centre of the play, societal issues such as the stereotypical role of the female, elements of class-consciousness, and the role of faith in a patriarchal society. Analysis of literature in this type gives the researchers much pressure to reveal real situations of that period. The main topic of this article is to analyze John Webster’s “ The Duchess of Malfi”.
