Experimental investigations on the partner-finding behaviour of Isohypsibius dastychi (Isohypsibiidae: Tardigrada)

Abstract The present study gives the first detailed results on the partner-finding behaviour of tardigrades. We investigated whether the finding of mating partners by Isohypsibius dastychi followed certain criteria that are expected if pheromone signals are involved. For this purpose, tardigrade pairs were positioned in an arena, at a range of distances from each other. Only those females that were ready for mating attracted the male. The smaller the initial distance between them, the more directly the male headed for the female. The route travelled and time taken increased exponentially with increasing initial distance between partners, which means that the male lost orientation with respect to the female the larger the distance between the pair became. The findings indirectly suggest a yet undetermined female pheromone, which produces a concentration gradient in the water and loses strength quickly in terms of distance. Our assumption is supported by rare observations of sperm release without direct contact between partners that nevertheless resulted in fertile offspring. The observation that the female partners in this no-contact mating behaviour then deposited their eggs (a behaviour that was never seen when males were absent) suggests that they, likewise, can sense a fresh ejaculate of spermatozoa in their direct vicinity.

Membrane distillation (MD) has great potential for the treatment of hyper saline waters, including liquid desiccant solutions used in air-conditioning systems. Previous experimental investigations have demonstrated the technical feasibility of MD for regeneration of liquid desiccant solutions. In this study, a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process of the LiCl liquid desiccant solution was simulated using MATLAB software. The simulation was first validated using data obtained from experimental tests. Then, it was used to elucidate the water temperatures, LiCl concentration, and water flux profiles along the membrane leaf inside the DCMD membrane module. Finally, with the help of the simulation, the effects of membrane properties and process operating conditions on the DCMD process performance were systematically examined. The results obtained from this simulation enrich the knowledge and hence facilitate the realization of MD for the liquid desiccant solution regeneration application.

Microfluidic chips—in which chemical or biological fluid samples are mixed into linear or nonlinear concentration distribution profiles—have generated enormous enthusiasm of their ability to develop patterns for drug release and their potential toxicology applications. These microfluidic devices have untapped potential for varying concentration patterns by the use of one single device or by easy-to-operate procedures. To address this challenge, we developed a soft-lithography-fabricated microfluidic platform that enabled one single device to be used as a concentration maker, which could generate linear, bell-type, or even S-type concentration profiles by tuning the feed flow rate ratios of each independent inlet. Here, we present an FFRR (feed flow rate ratio) adjustment approach to generate tens of types of concentration gradient profiles with one single device. To demonstrate the advantages of this approach, we used a Christmas-tree-like microfluidic chip as the demo. Its performance was analyzed using numerical simulation models and experimental investigations, and it showed an excellent time response (~10 s). With on-demand flow rate ratios, the FFRR microfluidic device could be used for many lab-on-a-chip applications where flexible concentration profiles are required for analysis.

ABSTRACTSaturn's broad E ring, the narrow G ring and the structured and apparently time variable F ring(s), contain many micron and sub-micron sized particles, which make up the “visible” component. These rings (or ring systems) are in direct contact with magnetospheric plasma. Fluctuations in the plasma density and/or mean energy, due to magnetospheric and solar wind processes, may induce stochastic charge variations on the dust particles, which in turn lead to an orbit perturbation and spatial diffusion. It is suggested that the extent of the E ring and the braided, kinky structure of certain portions of the F rings as well as possible time variations are a result of plasma induced electromagnetic perturbations and drag forces. The G ring, in this scenario, requires some form of shepherding and should be akin to the F ring in structure. Sputtering of micron-sized dust particles in the E ring by magnetospheric ions yields lifetimes of 102to 104years. This effect as well as the plasma induced transport processes require an active source for the E ring, probably Enceladus.

A total of 253 British and 318 American students were asked to make various estimates of overall intelligence as well as Gardner's (1999a) new list of 10 multiple intelligences. They made these estimations (11 in all) for themselves, their partner, and for various well-known figures such as Prince Charles, Tony Blair, Bill Gates, and Bill Clinton. Following previous research there were various sex and nationality differences in self-estimated IQ: Males rated themselves higher on verbal, logical, spatial, and spiritual IQ compared to females. Females rated their male partner as having lower verbal and spiritual, but higher spatial IQ than was the case when males rated their female partners. Participants considered Bill Clinton (2 points) and Prince Charles (5 points) less intelligent than themselves, but Tony Blair (5 points) and Bill Gates (15 points) more intelligent than themselves. Multiple regressions indicated that the best predictors of one's overall IQ estimates were logical, verbal, existential, and spatial IQ. Factor analysis of the 10 and then 8 self-estimated scores did not confirm Gardner's classification of multiple intelligences. Results are discussed in terms of the growing literature in the self-estimates of intelligence, as well as limitations of that approach.
