AbstractObjectiveTo determine the contribution of forest foods to dietary intake and estimate their association with household food insecurity.DesignCross-sectional survey conducted among 279 households. Using a 7 d recall questionnaire, information on household food consumption was collected from women and used to determine the household dietary diversity score, food variety score and forest food consumption score (FFCS). Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) score was determined and Spearman rank correlation was used to establish the relationship between consumption of forest foods and HFIAS score. Women’s dietary intake was estimated from two 24 h recalls. The contribution of forest foods to women’s nutrient intakes was calculated and women’s nutrient intakes were compared with estimated average nutrient requirements.SettingRural forest-dependent households in twelve villages in eastern and southern Cameroon.SubjectsHousehold heads and their non-pregnant, non-lactating spouses.ResultsForty-seven unique forest foods were identified; of these, seventeen were consumed by 98 % of respondents over the course of one week and by 17 % of women during the two 24 h recall periods. Although forest foods contributed approximately half of women’s total daily energy intake, considerably greater contributions were made to vitamin A (93 %), Na (100 %), Fe (85 %), Zn (88 %) and Ca (89 %) intakes. Despite a highly biodiverse pool of foods, most households (83 %) suffered from high food insecurity based on the HFIAS. A significant inverse correlation was observed between the HFIAS score and the FFCS (r2=−0·169, P=0·0006), demonstrating that forest foods play an important role in ensuring food security in these forest-dependent communities.ConclusionsForest foods are widely consumed by forest-dependent communities. Given their rich nutrient content, they have potential to contribute to food and nutrition security.

Abstract Objectives Rural residents are more likely to experience food insecurity and the related risks for obesity than urban residents. The objective of this study was to explore the association between dietary intake and food insecurity in a sample of residents of a rural county in Tennessee. Methods We used data from an obesity prevention program in a rural county in Tennessee. Adults were recruited to complete a survey, via telephone or online, about lifestyle behaviors. Dietary data were collected using the 26-item National Cancer Institute (NCI) food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Household food security was assessed using the USDA six-item Short Form Food Security Survey Module. Respondents were classified as ‘food secure’ or ‘food insecure’. We used multiple regression models to assess the association between dietary intake (dependent variable) and food security (independent variable) in men and women separately. Models were controlled for age, race, and body mass index. Results Data from 448 surveys were included in the analysis. The respondents’ mean ± SD age was 55 ± 18 years, 60% were female, and 66% were White. Overall, the average daily intake was less than 2 cups equivalents for vegetables (1.54 ± 0.43), less than 1 cup equivalents for fruits (0.92 ± 0.40), and more than 15 teaspoons equivalents for added sugars (16.06 ± 6.36). In multiple regression models, household food insecurity was associated with lower intake of vegetables both in men (mean ± SE, secure vs. insecure 1.76 ± 0.05 vs. 1.57 ± 0.07, P = 0.02) and in women (1.42 ± 0.03 vs. 1.30 ± 0.04, P = 0.01). Household food insecurity was associated with higher intake of added sugars in women (16.74 ± 0.56 vs. 14.87 ± 0.43, P = 0.009), but not in men. Conclusions Food insecurity was a predictor of lower intake of fruits and vegetables among men and women, and higher intake of added sugars among women. These findings highlight the need to address food insecurity in rural areas by improving access to nutritious food. Funding Sources Centers for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC).

Abstract Objectives Household food insecurity is a persistent public health issue in Canada. Analyses of dietary intake data from the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) showed heightened nutritional vulnerability among adults and, to a lesser degree, children in food-insecure households. Given the rise in food prices since 2004, people in food-insecure households may now be at heightened nutritional risk. The objective of this study is to determine how nutritional vulnerability associated with household food insecurity has changed between 2004 and 2015. Methods Dietary intake was assessed on the 2004 CCHS Nutrition (n = 35,107) and 2015 CCHS Nutrition (n = 20,487) using 24-hour recalls, with household food insecurity assessed using the Household Food Security Survey Module. The National Cancer Institute method was used to estimate usual intakes of nutrients of public health concern (calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, zinc, potassium) for food-insecure participants, by survey year, considering children 1–8 years (yr) and 9–18 yr and male and female adults, 19–64 yr. Prevalence of nutrient inadequacy was assessed using the EAR cut-point approach. Differences in usual intake and prevalence of inadequacy between surveys were assessed using t-tests. Weighted bootstrap technique was utilised to generate variance estimates. Results In 2004 and 2015, 8.4% of individuals lived in moderately or severely food-insecure households. Mean usual intakes were lower and prevalence of nutrient inadequacy were higher across groups in 2015 than 2004, but not all differences were statistically significant. Differences in mean potassium and vitamin C intakes were significant in all groups; differences for folate and magnesium were significant in all groups except older children. Calcium was significantly lower in all groups except adult males, and vitamin A was significantly lower in all groups except young children. Young children had significantly lower intakes of zinc. Older children and male adults had significantly higher prevalence of inadequacy for vitamin C. Conclusions Nutritional vulnerability associated with household food insecurity has worsened over time in Canada and remains an area in need of intervention. Abstract Objectives This study assesses the relationship between household food insecurity and adiposity, measured as BMI-for-age z-score (BMI-z), overweight/obesity, and waist circumference, as well as dietary intake and diet-related behaviors in US children. Methods A total of 5138 US schoolchildren ages 4–15 years from 130 communities in the cross-sectional Healthy Communities Study were included in this analysis. Household food insecurity was self-reported using a validated 2-item screener. Dietary intake was assessed using National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), a 26-item food frequency questionnaire, and dietary behaviors were assessed during a household survey. Data were analyzed using multilevel statistical models, including interaction tests for age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Results Food insecure children had a BMI z-score of 0.14 higher (95% CI: 0.06, 0.21) and a waist circumference of 0.91 cm higher (95% CI: 0.18, 1.63) than food secure children. Food insecure children have 1.17 times the odds of being overweight/obesity compared with food secure children (95% CI: 1.02, 1.34). There was no significant interaction by sex or race/ethnicity. Food insecure children consumed more sugar from sugar sweetened beverages (0.36 tsp/day; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.63), and ate breakfast (−0.28 days/week; 95% CI: −0.39, −0.17) and together with family (−0.22 days/week; 95% CI: −0.37, −0.06) less frequently compared to food secure children. Conclusions The present study found a significant, positive association between household food insecurity and child adiposity for children ages 10–15 years, as well as for several dietary intake and diet-related behaviors. This research helps disentangle the complex picture of food insecurity as a contributor to childhood obesity and poorer dietary outcomes in diverse populations. AbstractObjectiveTo examine the prevalence of household food insecurity and compare dietary intake by food security status in a representative Korean population.DesignCross-sectional. Food security status of households was classified using an eighteen-item food security questionnaire. The nutrition survey comprised questions on dietary habits, a 24 h dietary recall and a semi-quantitative FFQ.SettingThe 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.SubjectsA total of 3007 households completed the food security questionnaire. Family members within each household aged ≥1 year (n 7118) participated in the nutrition survey.ResultsResults from the 2012 survey indicated that 88·7 % of Korean households showed food security. The remaining 11·3 % (9·3 % for food insecurity without hunger and 2·0 % for food insecurity with hunger) were in food-insecure households. The prevalence of household food insecurity was 13·2 % in households with children and 10·3 % in households without children. Mean daily intakes of energy, fat and carbohydrates were not significantly different between food-secure and food-insecure adults. In contrast, mean daily intakes of protein, crude fibre, vitamins and minerals as well as weekly consumption frequencies of vegetables, seaweeds, fruits, fruit juice, nuts, and milk and milk products were significantly lower in food-insecure adults compared with food-secure adults.ConclusionsThe study demonstrated that food insecurity is associated with reduced intakes of healthy foods and nutrients essential for health and growth in a representative Korean population.

AbstractObjective:Examine the associations between household food insecurity (HFI) with sociodemographic, anthropometric and dietary intakes of mothers.Design:Cross-sectional survey (2014–2015). In addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire, data collection included the validated Arabic version of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, which was used to evaluate HFI. Dietary intake was assessed using 24-h dietary recall of a single habitual day, and maternal BMI was calculated based on weight and height measurements. Associations between HFI and maternal dietary intake (food groups, energy and macronutrients’ intake) were examined. Simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations between HFI status with odds of maternal overweight and measures of diet quality and diversity (Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women of Reproductive Age (MDD-W)).Setting:Lebanon.Participants:Mothers, nationally representative sample of Lebanese households with children (n 1204).Results:HFI was experienced among almost half of the study sample. Correlates of HFI were low educational attainment, unemployment and crowding. Significant inverse associations were observed between HFI and dietary HEI (OR 0·64, 95 % CI 0·46, 0·90, P = 0·011) and MDD-W (OR 0·6, 95 % CI 0·42, 0·85, P = 0·004), even after adjusting for socioeconomic correlates. No significant association was observed between HFI and odds of maternal overweight status.Conclusions:HFI was associated with compromised maternal dietary quality and diversity. Findings highlight the need for social welfare programmes and public health interventions to alleviate HFI and promote overall health and wellbeing of mothers.

To address the increase in overweight and obesity among mothers and children in sub-Saharan Africa, an understanding of the factors that drive their food consumption is needed. We hypothesized food consumption in Malawi is driven by a combination of factors, including season, food accessibility (area of residence, convenience of purchasing food, female autonomy), food affordability (household resources, food expenditures, household food insecurity), food desirability (taste preferences, body size preferences), demographics, and morbidity. Participants in Lilongwe and Kasungu Districts were enrolled across three types of mother-child dyads: either the mother (n = 120), child (n = 80), or both (n = 74) were overweight. Seven-day dietary intake was assessed using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire during the dry and rainy seasons. Drivers associated with intake of calories, macronutrients, and 11 food groups at p<0.1 in univariate models were entered into separate multivariate linear regression models for each dietary intake outcome. Mother-child dyads with an overweight child had a higher percent of calories from carbohydrates and lower percent of calories from fat compared to dyads with a normal weight child (both p<0.01). These mothers also had the highest intake of grains (p<0.01) and their children had the lowest intake of oil/fat (p = 0.01). Household food insecurity, maternal taste preferences, and maternal body size preferences were the most consistent predictors of food group consumption. Household food insecurity was associated with lower intake of grains, fruits, meat and eggs, oil/fat, and snacks. Maternal taste preferences predicted increased consumption of grains, legumes/nuts, vegetables, fish, and oil/fat. Maternal body size preferences for herself and her child were associated with consumption of grains, legumes/nuts, dairy, and sweets. Predictors of food consumption varied by season, across food groups, and for mothers and children. In conclusion, indicators of food affordability and desirability were the most common predictors of food consumption among overweight mother-child dyads in Malawi.

Abstract Objectives: To determine changes and factors associated with child malnutrition, obesity in women and household food insecurity before and after the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Design: A prospective follow up study. Setting: In 2019, the baseline Urban Health and Nutrition Study (UHNS-2019) was conducted in 603 households, which were selected randomly from 30 clusters to represent underserved urban settlements in Colombo. In the present study, 35% of households from the UHNS-2019 cohort were randomly selected for repeat interviews, one year after the baseline study and 6 months after COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. Height/length and weight of children and women were re-measured, household food insecurity was reassessed, and associated factors were gathered through interviewer administered questionnaires. Differences in measurements at baseline and follow-up studies were compared. Participants: A total of 207 households, comprising 127 women and 109 children were included. Results: The current prevalence of children with wasting and overweight was higher in the follow-up study than at baseline UHNS-2019 (18.3%vs13.7%;p=0.26 and 8.3%vs3.7%;p=0.12 respectively). There was a decrease in prevalence of child stunting (14.7%vs11.9%;p=0.37). A change was not observed in overall obesity in women, which was around 30.7%. Repeated lockdown was associated with a significant reduction in food security from 57% in UHNS-2019 to 30% in the current study (p<0.001). Conclusions: There was an increase in wasting and overweight among children while women had a persistent high prevalence of obesity. This population needs suitable interventions to improve nutrition status of children and women to minimise susceptibility to COVID-19.
