Abstract Background Obesity among women of childbearing age has becoming an important public health concern. We aimed to describe the trends of central obesity among Chinese women of childbearing age from 2004 to 2011 and to examine its associations with nutrients intake and daily behaviors. Methods Longitudinal data were derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Participants consisted of 2481 women aged 15–44 years old. WC (Waist circumference) and WHtR (Waist to height ratio) were adopted as indicators of central obesity. Generalized linear mixed model was performed to analyze the associations of nutrients intake and daily behaviors with central obesity. Results From 2004 to 2011, the prevalence of central obesity among Chinese women of childbearing age increased from 21.6 to 30.7% (WC as indice) or from 22.8 to 32.6% (WHtR as indice) (both p < 0.001). Protein intake above the AMDR (Acceptable macronutrient distribution range) (OR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.05–1.39, p < 0.01) and non-participation in LTPA (Leisure time physical activity) (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.17–1.80, p < 0.001) were risk factors for high WC, and the latter was also associated with high WHtR (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.10–1.67, p < 0.01). For those women who had high WC & high WHtR, the impacts of protein intake and LTPA became stronger, especial LTPA (OR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.21–1.94, p < 0.001). Age-stratified analyses found that non-participation in LTPA was key factor for central obesity in 15–34 age group, while protein intake above the AMDR was pronounced in the 35–44 age group. Conclusions Non-participation in LTPA and protein intake above the AMDR were significant contributors of central obesity, which could be intervention targets to deal with the growing trend of central obesity among women of childbearing age.

Abstract The effect of legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on cytokine homeostasis in human remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between legacy and emerging PFAS and cytokine profiles, and identify the main contributors to the disturbance of cytokine homeostasis. We quantified 21 PFAS in 198 Chinese women of childbearing age from 2015 to 2016. 13 cytokines were measured using the Meso Scale Discovery U-PLEX and V-PLEX platforms. The associations between PFAS exposure and cytokine levels were assessed using multiple linear regression (single-exposure), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models (PFAS mixture exposure). In single PFAS models, legacy and alternative PFAS were positively associated with Th1 and Treg cytokines, and negatively associated with Th2 and Th17 cytokines. For instance, each ln-unit increase in 6:2 chlorinated perfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was associated with a decrease in IL-10 by -0.228 (95% CI: -0.336, -0.120), -0.153 (95% CI: -0.277, -0.030), and -0.174 (95% CI: -0.339, -0.010), respectively. The BKMR model showed a significantly positive association of PFAS mixture with TGF-β and a negative association with IL-10. Overall, these results indicate that both legacy and emerging PFAS may affect the homeostasis of cytokines.

Abstract Background Tetanus vaccination is an indispensable component of the antenatal care (ANC) and is considered one of the most effective and protective measures against tetanus deaths. However, data on antenatal tetanus vaccination in Sudan are scarce. We aimed to explore the level of antenatal tetanus vaccination and to identify the influencing factors in a nationally representative population sample. Methods We used the latest available data (2014) of the Sudan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), developed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). We assessed the level of antenatal tetanus vaccination among women of childbearing age who gave at least one birth preceding the survey and defined adequate antenatal tetanus vaccination according to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results The total number of women of childbearing age involved in this analysis was 5433. Most of the participants (28.6%) were 25–29 years old, and vast majority of them (73.7%) live in rural areas. The prevalence of mothers who had adequate tetanus vaccination was 60.0%. Antenatal tetanus vaccination was significantly associated with higher level of mothers’ education (AOR = 1.70, 95% CI 1.25–2.32), higher household wealth index (AOR = 1.89, 95% CI 1.41–2.54), having four or more ANC visits (AOR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.30–1.71), and living in areas with low intensity of armed conflicts (AOR = 1.34, 95% CI 1.14–1.57). Conclusions Socioeconomic status had a significant impact on adequate antenatal tetanus vaccination. The results indicate the existence of variable rates and unequal access to tetanus vaccination among women of childbearing age in Sudan.

Endometriosis is a chronic and relatively common disease in women of childbearing age. Complications of this disease include a wide range of disorders. The cause of this disease is not known for sure, but several hypotheses have been proposed for it. In this disease, the entry of endometrial tissues into the peritoneal cavity causes oxidative stress through the Fenton reaction and inflammation in this site. Oxidative stress can be associated with many complications of endometriosis. In this review, an attempt has been made to discuss the effects of oxidative stress on various complications of this disease.

We estimate the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies to varicella zoster virus (VZV) based on the first serological study in a cohort of pregnant women and newborns from the Aburrá Valley (Antioquia-Colombia) who attended delivery in eight randomly chosen hospitals. An indirect enzyme immunoassay was used to determine anti-VZV IgG antibodies. Generalized linear models were constructed to identify variables that modify seropositivity. In pregnant women, seropositivity was 85.8% (95% CI: 83.4–85.9), seronegativity was 12.6% (95% CI: 10.8–14.6), and concordance with umbilical cord titers was 90.0% (95% CI: 89–91). The seropositivity of pregnant women was lower in those who lived in rural areas (IRR: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–0.7), belonged to the high socioeconomic status (IRR: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–0.7), and had studied 11 years or more (IRR: 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4–0.8). Among newborns, seropositivity was lower in those who weighed less than 3000 g (IRR: 0.8, 95% CI: 0.6–1.0). The high seropositivity and seronegativity pattern indicates the urgent need to design preconception consultation and vaccination reinforcement for women of childbearing age according to their sociodemographic conditions, to prevent infection and complications in the mother and newborn.

ABSTRAK Faktor risiko yang menyebabkan osteoporosis pada wanita yang dibagi menjadi dua antara lain faktor yang tidak dapat dikontrol yaitu usia, jenis kelamin, genetik, menopause, ras, serta faktor yang dapat dikontrol yaitu aktifitas olah raga, konsumsi kafein dan bersoda, asupan kalsium, mengkonsumsi obat kortikosteroid, merokok, Indeks Massa Tubuh, serta minum alkohol. Tujuan Penelitian untuk mengetahui hubunan asupan kalsium terhadap status kepadatan mineral tulang pada Wanita Usia Subur di Pekanbaru. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif analitik. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah wanita usia subur yang berjumlah 399 orang. Analisis dengan uji Chi-Square adanya hubungan antara asupan kalsium terhadap status kepadatan mineral tulang pada wanita usia subur dengan nilai Pvalue 0,000 < Alpha 0,05 dengan besar OR adalah 922.629 (95% CI: 125,039-6807,809) artinya responden yang kurang asupan kalsium berisiko 922 kali menderita osteoporosis. Kata kunci: asupan kalsium; status kepadatan mineral tulang ;  wanita usia subur ABSTRACTThe risk factors that cause osteoporosis in women are divided into two, namely factors that cannot be controlled, namely age, gender, genetics, menopause, race, and factors that can be controlled, namely exercise activity, consumption of caffeine and fizzy drinks, calcium intake, taking medication of Corticosteroids, smoking, Body Mass Index, and drinking alcohol. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between calcium intake and the status of bone mineral density in women of childbearing age in Pekanbaru. This research was an analytical quantitative research. The sample in this study was women of childbearing age, totaling 399 people. The analysis used Chi-Square. The result shows there is a relationship between calcium intake and bone mineral density status in women of childbearing age with a P value of 0.000 < Alpha 0.05 with a large OR of 922.629 (95% CI: 125.039-6807.809), meaning that respondents who lack intake calcium has 922 times the risk of suffering from osteoporosis. Keywords: calcium intake; bone mineral density status; women of childbearing age

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in pregnancy is associated with a higher risk for severe morbidity and mortality when compared with infection in non-pregnant women of childbearing age. An increasing number of countries recommend immunization against SARS-CoV-2 in pregnant women. Recent studies provide preliminary and supportive evidence on safety, immunogenicity and effectiveness of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in pregnant women; however, important knowledge gaps remain which warrant further studies. This collaborative consensus paper provides a review of the current literature on COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant women, identifies knowledge gaps and outlines priorities for future research to optimize protection against SARS-CoV-2 in the pregnant women and their infants.

Background: An unhealthy body weight is an adverse effect of malnutrition associated with morbidity among women of childbearing age. While there is increasing attention being paid to the body weights of children and adolescents in Nigeria and South Africa, a major surge of unhealthy body weight in women has received less attention in both countries despite its predominance. The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of body weights (underweight, normal, overweight, and obese) and individual-level factors among women of childbearing age by urban–rural variations in Nigeria and South Africa. Methods: This study used the 2018 Nigeria Demographic Health Survey data (n = 41,821) and 2016 South Africa Demographic Health Survey (n = 8514). Bivariate, multilevel, and intracluster correlation coefficient analyses were used to determine individual-level factors associated with body weights across urban–rural variations. Results: The prevalence of being overweight or obese among women was 28.2% and 44.9%, respectively, in South Africa and 20.2% and 11.4% in Nigeria. A majority, 6.8%, of underweight women were rural residents in Nigeria compared to 0.8% in South Africa. The odds of being underweight were higher among women in Nigeria who were unemployed, with regional differences and according to breastfeeding status, while higher odds of being underweight were found among women from poorer households, with differences between provinces and according to cigarette smoking status in South Africa. On the other hand, significant odds of being overweight or obese among women in both Nigeria and South Africa were associated with increasing age, higher education, higher wealth index, weight above average, and traditional/modern contraceptive use. Unhealthy body weights were higher among women in clustering areas in Nigeria who were underweight (intracluster correlation coefficient (ICC = 0.0127), overweight (ICC = 0.0289), and obese (ICC = 0.1040). Similarly, women of childbearing age in clustering areas in South Africa had a lower risk of experiencing underweight (ICC = 0.0102), overweight (ICC = 0.0127), and obesity (ICC = 0.0819). Conclusions: These findings offer a deeper understanding of the close connection between body weights variations and individual factors. Addressing unhealthy body weights among women of childbearing age in Nigeria and South Africa is important in preventing disease burdens associated with body weights in promoting Sustainable Development Goal 3. Strategies for developing preventive sensitization interventions are imperative to extend the perspectives of the clustering effect of body weights on a country level when establishing social and behavioral modifications for body weight concerns in both countries.
