A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated HME8881T, was isolated from a freshwater wetland located in the Republic of Korea. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME8881T grouped with members of the genus Ferruginibacter. The most closely related species were Ferruginibacter lapsinanis HU1-HG42T (95.6  %), Ferruginibacter alkalilentus HU1-GD23T (95.1  %), ‘Ferruginibacter profundus’ DS48-5-3 (94.7  %) and Ferruginibacter yonginensis HME8442T (93.4  %). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C15 : 1G, C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. A polar lipid analysis revealed phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, three unidentified aminophospholipids, two unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified lipids. DNA G+C content was 37.7 mol%. These results suggest that strain HME8881T represents a novel species of the genus Ferruginibacter, for which the name Ferruginibacter paludis sp. nov., is proposed with the type strain HME8881T ( = KCTC 42121T = CECT 8366T). In addition, emended descriptions of Ferruginibacter lapsinanis and Ferruginibacter alkalilentus are also proposed on the basis of new data obtained during this study.

An orange-pigmented bacterium, designated strain 13-9-B8T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected at Marado, Jeju Island, South Korea. The novel strain was Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, non-gliding, rod-shaped and aerobic. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain clustered with members of the genus Lewinella of the family Saprospiraceae in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was most closely related to the species Lewinella marina (95.6 % similarity to the type strain). Strain 13-9-B8T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and with 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain 13-9-B8T contained MK-7 as the predominant menquinone and summed feature 3, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids detected in strain 13-9-B8T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain 13-9-B8T was 59.1 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain 13-9-B8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lewinella, for which the name Lewinella xylanilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 13-9-B8T ( = DSM 29526T = KCTC 32663T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-gliding, orange-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HMF2925T, was isolated from fresh water in Korea. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMF2925T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Emticicia. Strain HMF2925T was closely related to Emticicia oligotrophica DSM 17448T (95.5 %) and Emticicia ginsengisoli Gsoil 085T (94.1 %). The major fatty acids of strain HMF2925T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c and C16 : 0.The major polar lipids of strain HMF2925T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid, two unidentified amino lipids and three unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain HMF2925T was 36.5 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMF2925T represents a novel species of the genus Emticicia, for which the name Emticicia aquatica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMF2925T ( = KCTC 42574T = CECT 8858T).

A non-motile, yellow–orange-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HME6664T, was isolated from Lake Soyang, Republic of Korea. The major fatty acids of strain HME6664T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 44.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (20.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME6664T formed a lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter . Strain HME6664T was closely related to Mucilaginibacter ximonensis (96.7 %), Mucilaginibacter dorajii (96.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter lappiensis (96.3 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HME6664T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter soyangensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is HME6664T ( = KCTC 23261T = CECT 7824T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

A Gram-staining-negative, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain AN9T, was isolated from a tidal flat of the Taean coast in South Korea. Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive short rods that were motile by means of a single polar flagellum. Growth of strain AN9T was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum, 25–30 °C) and at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.5). Strain AN9T contained ubiquinone Q-8 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and C10 : 0 3-OH (31.7 %), C18 : 1 ω7c (24.8 %), C16 : 0 (14.7 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, 10.72 %) as the major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain AN9T was 58 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain AN9T was related to members of the genus Marinobacterium and was related most closely to Marinobacterium litorale IMCC1877T (96.8 % similarity). On the basis of chemotaxonomic and molecular data, strain AN9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Marinobacterium, for which the name Marinobacterium lutimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AN9T (=KACC 13703T =DSM 22012T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WPCB133T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content was 47 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB133T forms an independent lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain WPCB133T was distantly related to Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis SCKT (94.7 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter paludis TPT56T (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter gracilis TPT18T (94.4 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WPCB133T from members of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB133T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB133T (=KCTC 12534T =NBRC 101115T). An emended description of the genus Mucilaginibacter is also proposed.

An extremely halophilic archaeon belonging to the order Halobacteriales was isolated from Fuente de Piedra salt lake, Spain. This strain, designated FP1T, was a pleomorphic coccoid, neutrophilic and required at least 15 % (w/v) NaCl for growth. Strain FP1T grew at 37–60 °C, with optimal growth at 50 °C. Mg2+ was not required, but growth was observed with up to 10 % (w/v) MgSO4. Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of mannose-6-sulfate(1-2)-glucose glycerol diether as a major glycolipid. Both C20C20 and C20C25 core lipids were present. The genomic DNA G+C content was 62.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that the isolate was most closely related to species of the genus Haloterrigena. DNA–DNA reassociation values between strain FP1T and the most closely related species of the genus Haloterrigena (Haloterrigena thermotolerans, Haloterrigena saccharevitans and Haloterrigena limicola) were lower than 29 %. It is therefore considered that strain FP1T represents a novel species of the genus Haloterrigena, for which the name Haloterrigena hispanica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FP1T (=DSM 18328T=ATCC BAA-1310T).

A non-motile, pale-yellow bacterium, designated strain HMD1056T, was isolated from an artificial lake located within the campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Yongin, Korea. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 49.1 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (22.4 %). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 46.9 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMD1056T formed a lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter and was closely related to the type strains of Mucilaginibacter ximonensis (95.4 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter paludis (93.4 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMD1056T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter myungsuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMD1056T ( = KCTC 22746T  = CECT 7550T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming actinobacterial strain, designated strain TL1T, was isolated from pig manure in Wuhan, China. The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c. The genomic DNA G+C content was 70.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TL1T was most closely related to the type strains of Knoellia sinensis (98.5 %), Knoellia subterranea (98.2 %) and Knoellia aerolata (96.9 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain TL1T with the type strains of K. sinensis and K. subterranea were 27.3 and 34.0 %, respectively. Comparison of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics among strain TL1T and related organisms revealed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Knoellia, for which the name Knoellia flava sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is TL1T ( = CGMCC 1.10749T = KCTC 19810T).

The taxonomic position of seven soil actinomycetes provisionally assigned to the genus Amycolatopsis was established in a polyphasic study. The isolates, which had identical 16S rRNA gene sequences, had closest similarity to the type strain of Amycolatopsis orientalis. A representative isolate, strain GY080T, had chemotaxonomic properties that were typical of the genus Amycolatopsis and could be distinguished from the type strain of A. orientalis using DNA–DNA relatedness data. All of the isolates shared a phenotypic profile that distinguished them from representatives of phylogenetically closely related species. Amplified rDNA restriction analysis showed that the isolates formed a homogeneous group that was distinctly separate from single-membered groups consisting of representative Amycolatopsis type strains, including that of A. orientalis. Based on the combined genotypic and phenotypic evidence, it is proposed that the seven isolates be classified as representatives of a novel species for which the name Amycolatopsis regifaucium sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GY080T (=DSM 45072T =NCIMB 14277T).
