A Gram-positive, moderately halophilic and endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain 18OMT, was isolated from salted animal hides. The cells were rods and produced ellipsoidal endospores at a terminal position. Strain 18OMT was motile, strictly aerobic and grew at 0.5–25 % (w/v) NaCl [optimal growth at 10 % (w/v) NaCl], at between pH 5.0 and 9.0 (optimal growth at pH 7.5) and at temperatures between 15 and 45 °C (optimal growth at 37 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that strain 18OMT was closely related to species of the genus Thalassobacillus within the phylum Firmicutes. The closest phylogenetic similarity was with Thalassobacillus devorans G-19.1T (98.4 %), Thalassobacillus cyri HS286T (97.9 %) and Thalassobacillus hwangdonensis AD-1T (97.4 %). The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (57.9 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (14.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (10.8 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (8.1 %). The respiratory isoprenoid quinones were MK-7 (98.5 %) and MK-6 (1.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 42.9 mol%. These features confirmed the placement of strain 18OMT within the genus Thalassobacillus. The DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain 18OMT and T. devorans G-19.1T, T. cyri HS286T and T. hwangdonensis AD-1T were 49 %, 9 % and 15 %, respectively, showing unequivocally that strain 18OMT constituted a novel genospecies. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain 18OMT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Thalassobacillus, for which the name Thalassobacillus pellis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 18OMT ( = CECT 7566T = DSM 22784T = JCM 16412T).

A Gram-positive bacterium, designated B22T, was isolated from potting soil produced in Portugal. This organism is a catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, motile, spore-forming, aerobic rod that grows optimally at 37 °C and pH 8.0–8.5. Optimal growth occurs in media containing 1 % (w/v) NaCl, although the organism can grow in 0–8 % NaCl. The cell wall peptidoglycan is of the A4α type with a cross-linkage containing d-Asp. The major respiratory quinone is menaquinone 7 and the major fatty acids are anteiso-15 : 0, anteiso-17 : 0 and iso-15 : 0. The DNA G+C content is 37.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain B22T formed a new branch within the family Bacillaceae. The novel isolate is phylogenetically closely related to members of genera of moderately halophilic bacilli and formed a coherent cluster with species of the genera Salinibacillus, Virgibacillus, Oceanobacillus and Lentibacillus, supported by bootstrap analysis at a confidence level of 71 %. Strain B22T exhibited 16S rRNA gene pairwise sequence similarity values of 94.7–94.3 % with members of the genus Salinibacillus, 95.1–92.8 % with members of the genus Virgibacillus, 94.7–93.2 % with members of the genus Oceanobacillus and 93.1–92.3 % with members of the genus Lentibacillus. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and physiological and biochemical characteristics, it is proposed that strain B22T represents a novel species in a new genus, Paucisalibacillus globulus gen. nov., sp. nov. Strain B22T (=LMG 23148T=CIP 108857T) is the type strain of Paucisalibacillus globulus.

A novel, moderately halophilic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YIM D17T, was isolated from a sample of sediment from a salt mine in Yunnan, south-western China. The taxonomy of strain YIM D17T was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain YIM D17T was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and non-motile and formed pink colonies on marine agar. Optimal growth occurred at 37 °C, pH 7.5–8.0 and in the presence of 10–15 % (w/v) NaCl. The major menaquinone was MK-7. The polar lipid profile was composed predominantly of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, one phospholipid, one glycolipid and one aminolipid. Minor amounts of other lipids were also detectable. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C17 : 1ω9c/10-methyl-C16 : 0 (24.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (23.6 %) and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c (13.8 %). The DNA G+C content was 43.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the isolate formed a distinct clade with the genera Gracilimonas and Balneola (both in the phylum Bacteroidetes) and was related to the species Gracilimonas tropica, Balneola vulgaris and Balneola alkaliphila, with sequence similarities of 85.6 %, 83.0 % and 82.8 % to the respective type strains. On the basis of its phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, strain YIM D17T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Fodinibius salinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM D17T ( = ACCC 10716T = DSM 21935T).

Three moderately halophilic, spore-forming strains, designated BH030062T, BH030049 and BH030080, were isolated from a solar saltern in Korea. Phylogenetic analyses and comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies revealed that the isolates represent a novel distinct monophyletic lineage within the phyletic group classically defined as the genus Bacillus and are most closely related to members of the genera Gracilibacillus (93·7–95·1 % similarity), Virgibacillus (93·5–94·8 %), Halobacillus (94·8–95·9 %), Filobacillus (94·4–94·8 %) and Lentibacillus (93·3–93·7 %). Strain BH030062T was strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-positive and motile by means of peritrichous flagella. It grew in the presence of 1–15 % (w/v) NaCl and at temperatures of 15–45 °C. The cell wall peptidoglycan contained A1γ-meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. DNA G+C content was about 41 mol% and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. On the basis of their physiological and molecular properties, the isolates represent a new genus, Pontibacillus gen. nov., and novel species, Pontibacillus chungwhensis sp. nov. The type strain is BH030062T (=KCTC 3890T=DSM 16287T).

Strain B33T is a moderately halophilic, exopolysaccharide-producing, Gram-negative, non-motile rod isolated from a hypersaline soil bordering a saline saltern on the Mediterranean seaboard in Murcia (Spain). The bacterium is chemoheterotrophic and strictly aerobic. It contains a pink pigment but does not synthesize bacteriochlorophyll a. It requires 0·66 M Na+, 0·1 M Mg2+ and 0·1 M K+ for optimum growth. It does not produce acid from carbohydrates. It cannot grow with carbohydrates, organic acids, sugars, alcohols or amino acids as sole sources of carbon and energy. Its major fatty-acids are 18 : 1ω7c (68·9 %) and 19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (12·8 %). The sole respiratory lipoquinone found in strain B33T is ubiquinone-10. The DNA G+C content is 64·2 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons show that the isolate is a member of the Roseobacter clade within the class ‘Alphaproteobacteria’. The similarity values with Roseivivax halodurans and Roseivivax halotolerans are 88·2 and 88·0 % respectively and 92·2 % with Salipiger mucosus. DNA–DNA hybridization values with these species are <30 %. In the light of the polyphasic evidence gathered in this study it is proposed that the isolate be classified as a novel genus and species with the name Palleronia marisminoris gen. nov., sp. nov. The proposed type strain is strain B33T (=CECT 7066T=LMG 22959T).

A novel alkaliphilic, halotolerant, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YIM CH208T, was isolated from a soda lake in Yunnan, south-west China. The taxonomy of strain YIM CH208T was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Strain YIM CH208T was Gram-negative, strictly aerobic and non-motile and formed red colonies. Optimal growth conditions were 28 °C, pH 8.5 and 0.5–2.5 % NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the isolate formed a distinct line within a clade containing the genus Echinicola in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was related to the species Echinicola pacifica and Rhodonellum psychrophilum, with sequence similarity of 91.7 and 91.6 % to the respective type strains. The DNA G+C content was 45.1 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C17 : 1 ω9c (19.9 %), C15 : 0 3-OH (12.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (11.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c; 10.7 %) and C17 : 1 ω6c (8.7 %). On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain YIM CH208T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Litoribacter ruber gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Litoribacter ruber is YIM CH208T (=ACCC 05414T =KCTC 22899T).

Two novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated HR08-7T and HR08-43T, were isolated from a sea sediment sample from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T and the members of the genus Demequina formed a monophyletic cluster with similarity range of 95.5–99.0 %. The peptidoglycan type of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T was A4β. The predominant menaquinone of both strains was demethylmenaquinone DMK-9(H4) and the major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C contents of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T were 64.5 and 62.4 mol%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T from the recognized Demequina species in phenotypic characteristics, indicate that the two strains merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Demequina , for which the names Demequina flava sp. nov. and Demequina sediminicola sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are HR08-7T ( = NBRC 105854T = DSM 24865T) and HR08-43T ( = NBRC 105855T = DSM 24867T), respectively.

A yellow-pigmented, motile, Gram-stain-negative, moderately halophilic and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated BA42AL-1T, was isolated from water of a saltern of Santa Pola, Alicante, Spain. Strain BA42AL-1T grew in media containing 5–20 % (w/v) salts (optimum 7.5 % salts). It grew between pH 6.0 and 9.0 (optimally at pH 7.5) and at 15–45 °C (optimally at 37 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on the comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BA42AL-1T is a member of the genus Aquisalimonas . The closest relatives to this strain were Aquisalimonas halophila YIM 95345T and Aquisalimonas asiatica CG12T with sequence similarities of 99.4 % and 97.0 %, respectively. DNA–DNA hybridization between the novel isolate and Aquisalimonas halophila YIM 95345T revealed a relatedness of 54 %. The major fatty acids of strain BA42AL-1T were C18 : 1ω6c/C18 : 1ω7c, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C16 : 0, and lower contents of C12 : 0 and C18 : 0. The polar lipid pattern of strain BA42AL-1T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, two glycolipids, a lipid and four unknown phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of this strain was 65.0 mol%. Based on the DNA–DNA hybridization, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented in this study, strain BA42AL-1T is proposed as a novel species of the genus Aquisalimonas , for which the name Aquisalimonas lutea sp. nov. is suggested. The type strain is BA42AL-1T ( = CCM 8472T = CECT 8326T = LMG 27614T).

A rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium, strain TNJL143-2T, having N-acyl-d-amino acid amidohydrolase (d-aminoacylase) activity, was isolated from a soil sample from Natori, Japan. It was a non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic bacterium without motility, showing a temperature optimum for growth of 30 °C and a pH optimum for growth of 5–7. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain showed the highest similarities to members of the genus Microbacterium, in particular, Microbacterium aerolatum, Microbacterium foliorum and Microbacterium phyllosphaerae. The chemotaxonomic characteristics, including the compositions of cellular menaquinones, cellular fatty acids and cell-wall amino acids, were consistent with those described for the genus Microbacterium. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was determined as 69·1 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization studies using type strains of M. aerolatum, M. foliorum and M. phyllosphaerae showed only low levels of relatedness (11–12 %). On the basis of these phenotypic and genotypic results, a novel species, Microbacterium natoriense sp. nov., is proposed, with TNJL143-2T (=JCM 12611T=ATCC BAA-1032T) as the type strain.

Three novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113, were isolated from soil samples from Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the three isolates were closely related to the members of the genus Agromyces , with similarity range of 95.6–98.7 %. The isolates contained l-2,4-diaminobutylic acid, d-alanine, d-glutamic acid and glycine in their peptidoglycans. The predominant menaquinone was MK-12 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C contents were 70.9–72.9 mol%. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolates matched those described for members of the genus Agromyces . The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences in phenotypic characteristics between strains IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113 and the species of the genus Agromyces with validly published names, indicate that the three isolates merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Agromyces , for which the names Agromyces iriomotensis sp. nov. and Agromyces subtropica sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are IY07-20T ( = NBRC 106452T = DSM 26155T) and IY07-56T ( = NBRC 106454T = DSM 26153T), respectively.

Two moderately halophilic and alkaliphilic bacteria, designated strains BH1T and HN5, were isolated from forest soil and garden soil, respectively, in Japan. Cells of strains BH1T and HN5 were non-motile, aerobic, bean-shaped, formed irregular clusters with 2–20 cells, Gram-positive and contained A1γ, meso-diaminopimelic acid-type murein. Spore formation was not detected. Growth occurred in 5–25 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 10–15 %, w/v), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 8.5–9.0) and at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C). The predominant isoprenoid quinones were menaquinone-7 and menaquinone-6. The phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The major cellular fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 and i-C18 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strains BH1T and HN5 was 45 and 46 mol%, respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two strains were 99.9 % similar. DNA–DNA hybridization results indicated high levels of relatedness (88 and 85 % reciprocally). Similarities with recognized species were less than 90.2 %. The phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics indicated that strains BH1T and HN5 represent a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Geomicrobium halophilum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH1T (=JCM 15647T=DSM 21769T).
