Nine unidentified Gram-positive, lipophilic corynebacteria were isolated from clinical and food samples and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. The bacteria were distinguished from Corynebacterium species with validly published names by biochemical tests, fatty acid content and whole-cell protein analysis. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated unambiguously that the nine strains were related phylogenetically to the species ‘Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum’ and represented a distinct subline within the genus Corynebacterium. On the basis of both phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, the formal description of Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of C. tuberculostearicum is Medalle XT (=LDC-20T=CIP 107291T=CCUG 45418T=ATCC 35529T).

A Gram-positive, coccus-shaped, lactic acid bacterium, strain LMG 23082T, was isolated from steeped maize grains. The organism is homofermentative and produces d- and l-lactic acid from glucose. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the organism belongs to the genus Pediococcus, with Pediococcus pentosaceus and Pediococcus acidilactici as nearest neighbours. Genotypic fingerprinting, whole-cell protein electrophoresis, DNA–DNA hybridizations and physiological and biochemical tests allowed differentiation of strain LMG 23082T from other established Pediococcus species. A remarkable feature was that, unlike other pediococci, this bacterium was capable of growth at pH 9·0. The strain studied represents a novel species for which the name Pediococcus stilesii sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain LMG 23082T (=BFE 1652T=FAIR-E 180T=CCUG 51290T), the only currently known isolate of the species.

Strain Jip14T, a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, was isolated from dried rice straw and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain Jip14T belongs to the family Sphingobacteriaceae, and the highest degree of sequence similarity was determined to be to Pedobacter saltans DSM 12145T (88.5 %), Pedobacter africanus DSM 12126T (87.6 %), Pedobacter heparinus DSM 2366T (87.1 %) and Pedobacter caeni LMG 22862T (86.9 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain Jip14T possesses menaquinone MK-7 and the predominant fatty acids C15 : 0 iso, C16 : 0, C16 : 0 10-methyl, C17 : 0 iso 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C15 : 0 iso 2-OH/C16 : 1 ω7c). The results of physiological and biochemical tests clearly demonstrated that strain Jip14T represents a distinct species. Based on these data, Jip14T should be classified within a novel genus and species, for which the name Parapedobacter koreensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Parapedobacter koreensis is Jip14T (=KCTC 12643T=LMG 23493T).

Bacterial isolates obtained from polychlorophenol-contaminated sites in Finland (strain K101T) and from a Dutch drinking water well (strain A175T) were characterized taxonomically. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, determination of DNA G+C content, physiological characterization, estimation of the ubiquinone and polar lipid patterns and fatty acid content revealed that strains K101T and A175T were similar to Sphingomonas wittichii RW1T but also showed pronounced differences. The DNA G+C contents of the two novel strains were 63.6 and 66.1 mol%, respectively. On the basis of these results, two novel species of the genus Sphingomonas are described, for which the names Sphingomonas haloaromaticamans sp. nov. [type strain A175T (=DSM 13477T=CCUG 53463T)] and Sphingomonas fennica sp. nov. [type strain K101T (=DSM 13665T=CCUG 53462T)] are proposed.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacterium was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field in Daejeon, South Korea, and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain DCY34T belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae, and the highest degree of sequence similarity was found with Sphingopyxis witflariensis W-50T (97.1 %), Sphingopyxis ginsengisoli Gsoil 250T (97.0 %), Sphingopyxis chilensis S37T (96.9 %), Sphingopyxis macrogoltabida IFO 15033T (96.8 %), Sphingopyxis alaskensis RB2256T (96.7 %) and Sphingopyxis taejonensis JSS54T (96.7 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain DCY34T possessed ubiquinone Q-10 as the predominant respiratory lipoquinone, which is common to members of the genus Sphingopyxis. The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c (27.5 %), summed feature 4 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C15 : 0 iso 2-OH; 18.6 %), C16 : 0 (15.6 %) and summed feature 8 (C19 : 1 ω6c and/or unknown 18.864; 15.4 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, sphingoglycolipid and an unknown polar lipid. The results of physiological and biochemical tests clearly demonstrated that strain DCY34T represented a separate species and supported its affiliation to the genus Sphingopyxis. Based on these data, the new isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Sphingopyxis panaciterrulae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY34T (=KCTC 22112T=JCM 14844T).

A novel marine bacterium, designated strain KMM 6171T, was subjected to taxonomic analysis by using a polyphasic approach. Colonies were yellow-pigmented and cells were Gram-negative, heterotrophic rods displaying slow gliding motility. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain KMM 6171T was closely related to the genus Algibacter, a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarity of 96.7–96.8 %. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3, comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH. The DNA G+C content was 35.1 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain KMM 6171T represents a novel species of the genus Algibacter, for which the name Algibacter mikhailovii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6171T (=KCTC 12710T=LMG 23988T). An emended description of the genus Algibacter based on the new data is also given.

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile bacterium, strain Ko06T, was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in South Korea and was characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain Ko06T belongs to the Gammaproteobacteria, and the highest levels of sequence similarity were with Thermomonas brevis LMG 21746T (98.4 %), Thermomonas fusca LMG 21737T (97.7 %), Thermomonas haemolytica A50-7-3T (96.5 %) and Thermomonas hydrothermalis SGM-6T (95.8 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain Ko06T possesses ubiquinone Q-8 and that the predominant fatty acids are C15 : 0 iso, C11 : 0 iso and C11 : 0 iso 3-OH, all of which corroborated assignment of the strain to the genus Thermomonas. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests clearly demonstrated that strain Ko06T represents a distinct species. On the basis of these data, strain Ko06T (=KCTC 12540T=NBRC 101155T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel Thermomonas species, for which the name Thermomonas koreensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A biodiversity study on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) occurring in traditional Belgian sourdoughs resulted in the isolation of two Lactobacillus isolates, LMG 23583T and LMG 23584, that could not be assigned to any recognized LAB species. The two isolates were initially investigated by means of phenylalanyl-tRNA synthase (pheS) gene sequence analysis and were found to occupy a separate position relative to recognized Lactobacillus species present in the pheS database. Subsequently, their phylogenetic affiliation was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, indicating that the two isolates belong to the Lactobacillus buchneri species group with Lactobacillus zymae, Lactobacillus acidifarinae and Lactobacillus spicheri as closest relatives. Whole-cell protein analysis (SDS-PAGE) and amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting of whole genomes confirmed their separate taxonomic status. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments, DNA G+C content, growth characteristics and biochemical features demonstrated that the two isolates represent a novel Lactobacillus species, for which the name Lactobacillus namurensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMG 23583T (=CCUG 52843T).
