A facultatively anaerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, catalase- and oxidase-negative, rod-shaped bacterium isolated from an infected human wound caused by a dog bite was characterized by phenotypic and molecular genetic methods. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain IMMIB Q2029717T was a member of the order Micrococcales of the class Actinobacteria , displaying 91.6 % to 96 % sequence similarity with members of the family Microbacteriaceae . Phylogentic trees generated by different algorithms indicated that the strain forms an independent phylogenetic line of descent that consistently clustered proximal to the base of the genus Leucobacter . Chemical studies revealed the presence of a cell-wall murein based on l-lysine (type B1α), major menaquinone (MK-10) and a DNA G+C content of 56.9 mol%. The distinct phylogenetic position, ribotyping and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight MS profiles and the significant phenotypic differences clearly separate strain IMMIB Q2029717T from its nearest phylogenetic neighbour and support its classification as a representative of a novel genus and species, with the suggested name Canibacter oris gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is IMMIB Q2029717T ( = DSM 27064T = CCUG 64069T).

A thermophilic, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, filamentous bacterium, strain PRI-4131T, was isolated from an intertidal hot spring in Isafjardardjup, NW Iceland. The strain grew chemo-organotrophically on various carbohydrates. The temperature range for growth was 40–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), the pH range was pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and the NaCl range was 0–3 % (w/v) (optimum 0.5 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain PRI-4131T represented a distinct lineage within the class Caldilineae of the phylum Chloroflexi. The highest levels of sequence similarity, about 91 %, were with Caldilinea aerophila STL-6-O1T and Caldilinea tarbellica D1-25-10-4T. Fermentative growth was not observed for strain PRI-4131T, which, in addition to other characteristics, distinguished it from the two Caldilinea species. Owing to both phylogenetic and phenotypic differences from the described members of the class Caldilineae , we propose to accommodate strain PRI-4131T in a novel species in a new genus, Litorilinea aerophila gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Litorilinea aerophila is PRI-4131T ( = DSM 25763T  = ATCC BAA-2444T).

An obligately alkaliphilic, anaerobic, thermo- and halotolerant, spore-forming bacterium was isolated from sediments of soda lake Magadi (Kenya) and designated strain Z-1001T. Cells of strain Z-1001T were straight, Gram-positive rods, slowly motile. Strain Z-1001T was found to be an obligate anaerobe. It grew within a pH range from 7.5 to 10.7 with an optimum at 9.25–9.5 (at 40 °C), a temperature range from 20 to 57 °C with an optimum at 45–50 °C, and a NaCl concentration range from 0 to 1.55 M with an optimum at 1.2–1.4 M. Peptides, such as meat and yeast extracts, peptone and tryptone, were fermented by Z-1001T. Carbohydrates did not support growth. With yeast extract as an electron donor, strain Z-1001T reduced S 2 O 3 2 − , NO 3 − , AsO 4 3 − , Fe(III) citrate and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as electron acceptors. The isolate was able to grow oligotrophically with a very small amount of yeast extract: 0.03 g l−1. The main fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c , C18 : 0 and C18 : 1ω9. The DNA G+C content of the isolate was 35.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain Z-1001T is a member of family Natranaerobiaceae , clustering with the type strain of Natranaerobius thermophilus (95.8–96.0 % sequence similarity). On the basis of physiological and phylogenetic data it is proposed that strain Z-1001T ( = DSM 24923T = VKM B-2666T) represents a novel genus and species, Natranaerobaculum magadiense gen. nov., sp. nov.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterial strain, 5116S-4T, was isolated from an air sample collected in Suwon city, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain was a new member of the family Microbacteriaceae . The sequence similarities of this strain to the members of the family Microbacteriaceae were less than 97 %, with the highest values observed with Cryobacterium mesophilum MSL-15T (96.3 %), Cryobacterium roopkundense RuGl7T (96.2 %), Labedella gwakjiensis KSW2-17T (96.2 %), Cryobacterium luteum Hh15T (96.2 %), Cryobacterium psychrophilum DSM 4854T (96.2 %), Klugiella xanthotipulae 44C3T (96.0 %) and Amnibacterium kyonggiense KSL51201-037T (96.0 %). According to the phylogenetic tree, strain 5116S-4T formed a cluster with A. kyonggiense KSL51201-037T, Labedella gwakjiensis KSW2-17T and Lysinimonas soli SGM3-12T (95.3 % sequence similarity) on the support of high bootstrap values. Cells were motile with single polar flagellum and showed optimum growth at 30 °C and pH 7 without NaCl. Predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, dimannosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown glycolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown lipid. The acyl type of the cell-wall muramic acid was the acetyl type. Peptidoglycan was supposed to be the type B1 with 2,4-diaminobutyric acid on position 3. Strain 5116S-4T was clearly distinguishable from the phylogenetically related genera in the family Microbacteriaceae in terms of chemotaxonomic characteristics. On the basis of the chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics, a novel genus and species are proposed, Naasia aerilata gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Naasia aerilata is 5116S-4T ( = KACC 15517T  = NBRC 108725T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, orange-coloured, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile bacterium, designated strain 92VT, was isolated from the marine sponge Amphilectus fucorum, collected from Lough Hyne, County Cork, Ireland. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 92VT clustered with members of the family Flavobacteriaceae , the closest member being Aquimarina latercula NCIMB 1399T, with a gene sequence similarity of 97.5 %. Strain 92VT required seawater for growth with optimal growth occurring at 25 °C, at pH 6–7 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. MK-6 was the sole respiratory quinone present and the major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content was 36.1 mol%. Combined phenotypic differences and phylogenetic analysis indicate that strain 92VT represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina amphilecti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 92VT ( = NCIMB 14723T = DSM 25232T).

An oval to rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, phototrophic bacterium, strain JA738T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from a pink pond. Strain JA738T was non-motile and had vesicular-type intracellular photosynthetic membranes. Bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spheroidene series were present as the major photosynthetic pigments. Strain JA738T required thiamine and pantothenate for growth. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω5c, C18 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c11-methyl; minor amounts of C10 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 0 were also present. The major quinone was Q-10 and major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified sulfolipids (SL1–2). Phylogenetic analysis on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JA738T clustered with species of the genus Rhodovulum in the class Alphaproteobacteria . Strain JA738T was most closely related to Rhodovulum adriaticum DSM 2781T (96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and other members of the genus Rhodovulum (<96.1 %). On the basis of phenotypic and molecular genetic evidence, it is proposed that strain JA738T should be classified as a novel species of the genus Rhodovulum for which the name Rhodovulum bhavnagarense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA738T ( = DSM 24766T = KCTC 15110T).

A strictly aerobic, thermophilic, moderately acidophilic, non-spore-forming bacterium, strain P373T, was isolated from geothermally heated soil at Waikite, New Zealand. Cells were filamentous rods, 0.2–0.4 µm in diameter and grew in chains up to 80 µm in length. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain P373T was shown to belong to the family Chitinophagaceae (class Sphingobacteriia ) of the phylum Bacteroidetes , with the most closely related cultivated strain, Chitinophaga pinensis UQM 2034T, having 87.6 % sequence similarity. Cells stained Gram-negative, and were catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were i-15 : 0 (10.8 %), i-17 : 0 (24.5 %) and i-17 : 0 3-OH (35.2 %). Primary lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and three other unidentified polar lipids. The presence of sulfonolipids (N-acyl-capnines) was observed in the total lipid extract by mass spectrometry. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 47.3 mol% and the primary respiratory quinone was MK-7. Strain P373T grew at 35–63 °C with an optimum temperature of 60 °C, and at pH 5.5–8.7 with an optimum growth pH of 7.3–7.4. NaCl tolerance was up to 5 % (w/v) with an optimum of 0.1–0.25 % (w/v). Cell colonies were non-translucent and pigmented vivid yellow–orange. Cells displayed an oxidative chemoheterotrophic metabolism. The distinct phylogenetic position and the phenotypic characteristics separate strain P373T from all other members of the phylum Bacteroidetes and indicate that it represents a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Thermoflavifilum aggregans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is P373T ( = ICMP 20041T = DSM 27268T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 2-3T, was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto city, Kochi prefecture, Japan. This strain grew well with starch. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Rhodobacteraceae and that the strain was related most closely to the genus Pacificibacter (94.0 % sequence similarity to the type strain). The DNA G+C content was 52.4 mol%. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C14 : 0 and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified lipid, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified phospholipid. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. Strain 2-3T did not grow at 4 or 35 °C, while the type strain of the type species of the genus Pacificibacter grows at both temperatures. From the taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is proposed that strain 2-3T be placed into a novel genus and species named Amylibacter marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. in the family Rhodobacteraceae . The type strain of Amylibacter marinus is 2-3T ( = NBRC 110140T = LMG 28364T).

A novel thermophilic bacterium, strain Kam1851T, was isolated from a terrestrial hot spring of the Uzon Caldera, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Cells of strain Kam1851T were spore-forming rods with a Gram-positive type of cell wall. Growth was observed between 46 and 78 °C, and pH 5.5–8.5. The optimal growth (doubling time, 6.0 h) was at 60–65 °C and pH 6.5. The isolate was an obligate anaerobe growing in pre-reduced medium only. It grew on mineral medium with molecular hydrogen or formate as electron donors, and elemental sulfur, thiosulfate or polysulfide as electron acceptors. The main cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 (34.2 %), iso-C16 : 0 (18 %), C18 : 0 (12.8 %) and iso-C17 : 0 (11.1 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain Kam1851T was 63 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain Kam1851T belonged to the order Thermoanaerobacterales , but it was not closely related to representatives of any genera with validly published names. The most closely related strains, which had no more than 89.2 % sequence similarity, were members of the genera Ammonifex and Caldanaerobacter . On the basis of its phylogenetic position and novel phenotypic features, isolate Kam1851T is proposed to represent a novel species in a new genus, Brockia lithotrophica gen. nov., sp. nov.; the type strain of Brockia lithotrophica is Kam1851T ( = DSM 22653T = VKM B-2685T).

A bacterial strain, JLT2016T, was isolated from a sample of South-eastern Pacific deep-sea water. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, devoid of flagella, motile by gliding and rod-shaped. Colonies were mucoid and cream. Growth occurred at 1.0–11.0 % (w/v) NaCl, 10–40 °C and pH 4.0–9.0. The major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) (60.5 %), C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (10.9 %) and C16 : 0 (9.0 %). The polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two sphingoglycolipids. The DNA G+C content was 67.1 mol%. The closest relative of strain JLT2016T was Salipiger mucosus A3T (96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The results of phylogenetic analyses with different treeing algorithms indicated that this strain belonged to the Roseobacter clade in the order Rhodobacterales . Based on polyphasic analysis, strain JLT2016T is considered to represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Thiobacimonas profunda gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JLT2016T ( = LMG 27365T = CGMCC 1.12377T).

An alphaproteobacterium, strain Dia-1T, was isolated from algae-dominated biofilms on stones from the littoral zone of Lake Constance, Germany. This bacterium was isolated after initial enrichment in spent medium obtained after growth of a diatom culture. Numerous sugars and some organic acids and alcohols served as growth substrates. The bacterium grew slowly, was strictly aerobic but microaerophilic, and did not grow in cultures shaken under air. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain Dia-1T was distantly related to representatives of the genera Azospirillum (90–91 % sequence similarity), Skermanella (88–89 %), Rhodocista (87–88 %) and Dongia (88–89 % sequence similarity). Based on this sequence comparison, on phenotypic characterization including substrate utilization patterns, and comparison of cellular fatty acids, quinones, polar lipids and polyamines, this isolate was found to be substantially different from the genera mentioned above. On the basis of these results, a novel genus and species is proposed for this strain. The name Elstera litoralis gen. nov., sp. nov. is suggested, with strain Dia-1T ( = DSM 19532T = LMG 24234T) as the type strain of the type species.
