A Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain FR1439T, was isolated from the soil of Dokdo in the Republic of Korea. The cells of strain FR1439T were catalase- and oxidase-positive, motile and rod-shaped. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that it represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Pseudomonas. The levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FR1439T and type strains of phylogenetically related species, namely Pseudomonas flavescens, Pseudomonas mendocina, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes and Pseudomonas straminea, ranged from 28 to 37 %. Several phenotypic characteristics, together with the cellular fatty acid composition, can be used to differentiate strain FR1439T from related pseudomonads. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, strain FR1439T represents a novel species, for which the name Pseudomonas segetis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FR1439T (=IMSNU 14101T=CIP 108523T=KCTC 12331T).

A polyphasic study was undertaken to establish the taxonomic status of a Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycete, strain HPA177T, isolated from a marine sponge, Hymeniacidon perleve. The organism formed branching, non-fragmenting vegetative hyphae and produced black pigment. Chemotaxonomic characteristics were consistent with its assignment to the genus Actinoalloteichus. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain HPA177T formed a robust clade with type strains of the genus Actinoalloteichus, but was distinct from them. A number of phenotypic characteristics also readily distinguished strain HPA177T from species of the genus Actinoalloteichus with validly published names. On the basis of the above data, it is proposed that strain HPA177T represents a novel species, Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis sp. nov. The type strain of Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis is HPA177T (=CGMCC 4.2500T=JCM 13436T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, yellow-pigmented, gliding, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium (RA5-111T) was isolated from foreshore soil. The taxonomic status of the novel isolate was determined using a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain RA5-111T could be assigned to the genus Gramella, with sequence similarities of 97.7, 97.3 and 96.2 % to the type strains of Gramella echinicola, Gramella portivictoriae and Gramella marina, respectively. Chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics also supported the affiliation of strain RA5-111T with the genus Gramella. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.1 mol%. The isolate contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and a summed feature (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) as major fatty acids, and phosphatidylethanolamine and unknown phospholipids as the polar lipids. DNA–DNA relatedness, phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data clearly indicate that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Gramella, for which the name Gramella gaetbulicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RA5-111T ( = KCTC 23022T  = JCM 16528T  = NBRC 106272T).

Strain DCY45T was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, Korea. Strain DCY45T was Gram-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, motile and rod-shaped and produced yellow pigments on R2A agar. The organism grew optimally at 30 °C and at pH 7.0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 65.4 mol%. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8. The major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence was used to determine the taxonomic position of strain DCY45T, which is most closely related to species of the genus Rhodanobacter, with similarity levels of 96.0–98.4 %; DNA–DNA relatedness with related strains was lower than 60 %. Strain DCY45T differed significantly from related type strains in phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of these phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic studies, strain DCY45T represents a novel species of the genus Rhodanobacter, for which the name Rhodanobacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY45T (=KCTC 22620T =JCM 16126T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A Gram-negative, motile, strictly aerobic, violet-pigment-producing bacterium, designated strain FR1199T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Byunsan, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain FR1199T represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Pseudoalteromonas. The phenotypic features of strain FR1199T were similar to those of Pseudoalteromonas phenolica and Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea, but several physiological and chemotaxonomical properties readily distinguished strain FR1199T from these species. Major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0) and monounsaturated C18 : 1 ω7c fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 39 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is concluded that the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Pseudoalteromonas, for which the name Pseudoalteromonas byunsanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FR1199T (=JCM 12483T=KCTC 12274T).

Strain DCY21T, a Gram-negative, gliding and rod-shaped aerobic bacterium was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in the Republic of Korea and characterized using a polyphasic approach in order to determine its taxonomic position. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain DCY21T clustered with the species of the genus Lysobacter. It was closely related to Lysobacter gummosus LMG 8763T (97.9 %), Lysobacter capsici YC5194T (97.6 %), Lysobacter antibioticus DSM 2044T (97.5 %), Lysobacter niastensis DSM 18481T (97.2 %) and Lysobacter enzymogenes DSM 2043T (96.9 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain DCY21T were iso-C15 : 0 (34.3 %), iso-C17 : 1 ω9c (19.5 %) and iso-C17 : 0 (17.2 %) and the major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The major polar lipids of strain DCY21T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidyl-N-methylethanolamine. The G+C content of the total DNA was 65.4 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness values, and biochemical and physiological characteristics strongly supported the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain DCY21T from species of the genus Lysobacter. Strain DCY21T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Lysobacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY21T (=KCTC 22011T =LMG 24126T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated K19414T, was isolated from a chironomid (Diptera; Chironomidae) egg mass which was sampled from Kishon River in northern Israel. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence positioned the novel strain among the genus Rheinheimera, with closest similarity to Rheinheimera pacifica KMM 1406T. The levels of similarity to type strains of Rheinheimera species were lower than 96.5 %. Isolate K19414T is aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive; growth was observed at salinities of 0–2 % NaCl and the temperature for growth ranged from 4 to 40 °C. The major cellular fatty acids are 16 : 0 (14.8 %) and 16 : 1ω7c and/or 15 : 0 iso 2-OH (25.76 %). The DNA G+C content is 49.9 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain K19414T (=LMG 23818T =DSM 18694T) was classified in the genus Rheinheimera as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Rheinheimera chironomi sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, DS-18T, was isolated from soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its exact taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-18T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C without NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-18T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas. Strain DS-18T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. Strain DS-18T exhibited levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.3–98.7 % to the type strains of Brevundimonas species and Mycoplana bullata. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain DS-18T and the type strains of phylogenetically related Brevundimonas species and M. bullata were in the range 15–32 %. Strain DS-18T differed from Brevundimonas species and M. bullata in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain DS-18T represents a novel species of the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas lenta sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-18T (=KCTC 12871T =JCM 14602T).

A dark-pink-coloured bacterial strain, B4Y-8T, was isolated from a soil cultivated with ginseng. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed highest similarity with Mucilaginibacter litoreus BR-18T (96.8 %), Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (96.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter defluvii A5T (96.2 %) among the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain B4Y-8T was a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterium producing a large amount of extracellular polymeric substance. The strain grew at 10–35 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 3.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain B4Y-8T was 49.0 mol%. It contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. On the basis of evidence from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain B4Y-8T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B4Y-8T ( = KACC 18152T = JCM 30759T).

An orange-coloured, rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic bacterial strain, designated JC2680T, was isolated from a seawater sample of Jeju Island, Korea. The isolate required sea salts for growth. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the test strain belonged to the genus Aquimarina within the family Flavobacteriaceae, but shared relatively low levels of similarity (93.6–95.9 %) with the type strains of recognized Aquimarina species. The predominant cellular fatty acids [iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 9 (comprising 10-methyl C16 : 0 and/or iso-C17 : 1ω9c) and DNA G+C content (35 mol%) were consistent with the assignment of strain JC2680T to the genus Aquimarina. However, a number of phenotypic characteristics, namely inability to grow under microaerophilic conditions, differences in enzyme reactions, and absence of flexirubin-type pigments and gliding motility, clearly distinguished strain JC2680T from recognized species of the genus Aquimarina. The data presented thus indicate that strain JC2680T represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina, for which the name Aquimarina addita sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JC2680T ( = KACC 14156T  = JCM 17106T).
