A marine bacterium, designated strain KMM 6038T, was subjected to taxonomic analysis via a polyphasic approach. Cells of the strain were heterotrophic, orange-pigmented, Gram-negative and motile by means of gliding. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain KMM 6038T was closely related to the type species of the genera Algibacter and Yeosuana, members of the family Flavobacteriaceae, with sequence similarities of 93.8 and 93.6 % to the respective type strains. However, several chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, such as the cellular fatty acid profile (iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1, C15 : 0, C15 : 1 ω6c, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH) and the low G+C content of the DNA (35.7 mol%), indicated that the strain should be separated from these two genera. From the results of phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, the bacterium should be classified as representing a novel genus and species, for which the name Mariniflexile gromovii gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Mariniflexile gromovii is KMM 6038T (=KCTC 12570T=LMG 22578T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium, designated MJ17T, was isolated from sludge at the Daejeon sewage disposal plant in South Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MJ17T belonged to the genus Paracoccus in the family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain MJ17T and type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus were 94.1–97.4 %. The highest similarities were between strain MJ17T and Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T, Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T and Paracoccus alcaliphilus JCM 7364T (97.4, 97.2 and 96.3 %, respectively). Strain MJ17T exhibited <22 % DNA–DNA relatedness with P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens JCM 21774T. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.7 mol%. Strain MJ17T contained ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were C18 : 0 (11.3 %), C16 : 0 (10.2 %) and summed feature 7 (containing one or more of C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9c and C18 : 1ω12t; 54.3 %). Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules are formed. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain MJ17T should be classified in a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ17T ( = KCTC 22480T  = JCM 16385T  = KEMB 9004-001T).

Four thermophilic, Gram-positive strains, designated H0165T, 500275T, C0170 and 700375, were isolated from a composting process in Japan. The isolates grew aerobically at about 65 °C on a solid medium with formation of substrate mycelia; spores were produced singly along the mycelia. These morphological characters resembled those of some type strains of species belonging to the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, except that aerial mycelia were not formed. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the closest related species to the isolates were members of the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, but that the isolates formed an independent phylogenetic lineage. Some chemotaxonomic characters of the isolates, such as DNA G+C contents of 58·7–60·3 mol%, MK-7 as the major menaquinone and cellular fatty acid profiles, differed from those of members of the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’. DNA–DNA hybridization showed that the isolates could be divided into two genomic groups, strain H0165T and the other three strains. These results indicated that the four isolates should be classified into two species of a novel genus in the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, for which the names Planifilum fimeticola gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain H0165T=ATCC BAA-969T=JCM 12507T) and Planifilum fulgidum sp. nov. (type strain 500275T=ATCC BAA-970T=JCM 12508T) are proposed.

A motile, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain JS11-7T, was isolated from forest soil from Halla Mountain, Jeju Island, Korea. It grew optimally at 28 °C, pH 6–7 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JS11-7T belongs to the family Neisseriaceae, with Silvimonas terrae as its closest relative (95.0 % similarity). It contained Q-8 as the predominant quinone and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 62 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain JS11-7T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Andreprevotia chitinilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type species is Andreprevotia chitinilytica and the type strain is JS11-7T (=KACC 11608T=DSM 18519T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped or spherical bacterium, strain 2A-7T, was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto city, Kochi prefecture, Japan. The strain produced a pigment(s), the absorption spectrum of which closely resembled that of β-carotene. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Flavobacteriaceae and clustered distantly with the type strains of species of the genus Lutibacter (up to 93.9 % similarity). The DNA G+C content was 34.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified lipids. Menaquinone 6 was detected as the sole isoprenoid quinone. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain 2A-7T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Flavicella marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Flavicella marina is 2A-7T ( = NBRC 110145T = KCTC 42197T).

Strain TS-56T was isolated from the gut of a wood-feeding termite, Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain represented a member of the genus Gryllotalpicola of the family Microbacteriaceae , with sequence similarities to other species of the genus ranging from 96.6 % to 97.8 %. The isolate was Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, with light yellow colonies and irregular short rod-shaped cells (0.4–0.6 µm in diameter, 0.6–1.0 µm in length). Growth of TS-56T occurred at 20–35 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and at pH 4.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 5.0). The peptidoglycan of TS-56T contained ornithine, glutamic acid, alanine, homoserine and glycine. The acyl type was acetyl. The most abundant cellular fatty acid of TS-56T was cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 (88.79 %). The respiratory menaquinone was MK-11. The polar lipid profile contained disphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and two unknown glycolipids. DNA of the type strain had a G+C content of 67.4 mol%. On the basis of the phylogenetic properties and phenotypic distinctiveness, TS-56T represents a novel species of the genus Gryllotalpicola , for which the name Gryllotalpicola reticulitermitis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TS-56T ( = CGMCC 1.10363T = NBRC 109838T).

A novel actinobacterial strain was isolated from a seawater sample collected on Mara Island, Jeju, Republic of Korea. Cells of this organism were aerobic, Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci that occurred singly or in pairs. Colonies were circular, smooth, convex and white–cream in colour. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism belonged to the family Dermacoccaceae and formed a monophyletic clade between the type strains of Demetria terragena (96.8 % similarity) and Branchiibius hedensis (95.2 % similarity). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained l-lysine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and serine, indicating that the isolate possessed peptidoglycan type A4α. The whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, mannose, xylose, arabinose, ribose and rhamnose. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The polar lipids contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unknown phospholipid and five unknown lipids. The cellular fatty acid profile was represented by large amounts of iso-methyl branched and monounsaturated iso- and anteiso-methyl branched acids, along with the presence of a diagnostic 10-methyl acid. The G+C content of the DNA was 71 mol%. On the basis of data from polyphasic analyses presented here, strain MSW-24T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Dermacoccaceae , for which the name Tamlicoccus marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Tamlicoccus marinus is MSW-24T ( = KCTC 19485T = DSM 21415T).

Two bacterial strains, R2A1-13T and R2A45-3T, were isolated from greenhouse soils in Korea. The cells of both strains were Gram-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed the isolates in the genus Flavobacterium within the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain R2A1-13T was found to be related to Flavobacterium columnare IAM 14301T, Flavobacterium saliperosum CGMCC1.3801T and Flavobacterium croceum EMB47T, with sequence similarities of 96.8, 95.0 and 94.6 %, respectively. Strain R2A45-3T was found to be related to F. croceum EMB47T and Flavobacterium aquatile ATCC 11947T, with sequence similarities of 94.7 and 94.6 %, respectively. Both strains contained iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the main fatty acids and contained a menaquinone with six isoprene units (MK-6) as the major isoprenoid quinone. The G+C contents of the DNA from strains R2A1-13T and R2A45-3T were 34 and 38 mol%, respectively. A polyphasic taxonomic study revealed that these strains belong to two novel species within the genus Flavobacterium, for which the names Flavobacterium terrae sp. nov. and Flavobacterium cucumis sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of F. terrae sp. nov. and F. cucumis sp. nov. are R2A1-13T (=KACC 11731T=DSM 18829T) and R2A45-3T (=KACC 11732T=DSM 18830T), respectively.

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming betaproteobacterium (TRO-001DR8T) was isolated from humic-lake samples collected from northern Wisconsin, USA. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain TRO-001DR8T belonged to the family Neisseriaceae, and the phylogenetic distance from its closest relative, Chromobacterium violaceum, was 95 %. Strain TRO-001DR8T lacked the violet pigmentation of C. violaceum and shared only 26 % DNA–DNA relatedness with C. violaceum. The DNA G+C content of strain TRO-001DR8T was 59 mol%. The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω7c + C16 : 1 ω7c 2-OH iso (52·5 %), C16 : 0 (21·7 %), C18 : 1 ω7c (8·0 %) and C12 : 0 (5·1 %). Strain TRO-001DR8T grew optimally at 35 °C and pH 6·0, did not utilize sucrose, but did use glucose, some organic acids and most protein amino acids. Biochemical, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses showed that strain TRO-001DR8T could not be assigned to any known genus of the Betaproteobacteria. Therefore, the isolate represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Aquitalea magnusonii gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TRO-001DR8T (=ATCC BAA-1216T=BCCM/LMG 23054T).

A rod-shaped marine bacterium, designated strain CL-TF09T, isolated from a tidal flat in Ganghwa, Korea, was characterized based on its physiological and biochemical features, fatty acid profile and phylogenetic position. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed a clear affiliation with the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain CL-TF09T showed the closest phylogenetic relationship with the genera Tenacibaculum and Polaribacter; sequence similarities between CL-TF09T and the type strains of Tenacibaculum and Polaribacter species ranged from 90·7 to 91·8 %. Cells of strain CL-TF09T were non-motile and grew on solid media as yellow colonies. The strain grew in the presence of 1–5 % sea salts, within a temperature range of 5–30 °C and at pH 7–8. The strain had iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (17·4 %), iso-C15 : 0 (16·7 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (15·1 %) and iso-C16 : 0 3-OH (13·4 %) as predominant fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 33·9 mol%. Based on the physiological, fatty acid composition and phylogenetic data presented, strain CL-TF09T is considered to represent a novel genus and species of the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Lutibacter litoralis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-TF09T (=KCCM 42118T=JCM 13034T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-gliding, strictly aerobic, pale yellow colony-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated HM0024T, was isolated from coastal seawater of the Yellow Sea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomy study. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain HM0024T was most closely related to Chryseobacterium balustinum LMG 8329T (94.4 %), Chryseobacterium scophthalmum LMG 13028T (94.4 %), Chryseobacterium piscium LMG 23089T (94.3 %) and Elizabethkingia meningoseptica ATCC 13253T (94.0 %) and shared less than 92 % sequence similarity with other members of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain HM0024T formed an independent phyletic line of descent within the family Flavobacteriaceae. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 29.6 mol% and its major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 1 ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and several aminolipids. Strain HM0024T was differentiated from phylogenetically related members of the family by having lower DNA G+C content, larger proportions of summed feature 3, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 3-OH and particular phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain HM0024T is classified as a representative of a novel genus and species, for which the name Soonwooa buanensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Soonwooa buanensis is HM0024T (=KCTC 22689T =CECT 7503T).
