Four thermophilic, Gram-positive strains, designated H0165T, 500275T, C0170 and 700375, were isolated from a composting process in Japan. The isolates grew aerobically at about 65 °C on a solid medium with formation of substrate mycelia; spores were produced singly along the mycelia. These morphological characters resembled those of some type strains of species belonging to the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, except that aerial mycelia were not formed. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the closest related species to the isolates were members of the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, but that the isolates formed an independent phylogenetic lineage. Some chemotaxonomic characters of the isolates, such as DNA G+C contents of 58·7–60·3 mol%, MK-7 as the major menaquinone and cellular fatty acid profiles, differed from those of members of the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’. DNA–DNA hybridization showed that the isolates could be divided into two genomic groups, strain H0165T and the other three strains. These results indicated that the four isolates should be classified into two species of a novel genus in the family ‘Thermoactinomycetaceae’, for which the names Planifilum fimeticola gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain H0165T=ATCC BAA-969T=JCM 12507T) and Planifilum fulgidum sp. nov. (type strain 500275T=ATCC BAA-970T=JCM 12508T) are proposed.

The taxonomic position of a Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, CAU 9324T, isolated from a grassy sandbank was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain CAU 9324T grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 6.0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol as the major component. The predominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 9324T was 48.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, showing <96.4 % similarity to the type strains of all recognized Paenibacillus species. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain CAU 9324T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus puldeungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9324T (=KCTC 13718T =CCUG 59189T).

A novel Gram-negative bacterium, designated MSW-14T, was isolated from seawater collected around Mara Island, Jeju, Republic of Korea. The organism was motile by means of a flagellum and showed optimum growth at 0–4 % NaCl, 30 °C and pH 7.1. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belonged to the family Erythrobacteraceae. The strain's closest phylogenetic neighbours were Altererythrobacter epoxidivorans JCS350T (97.7 % sequence similarity), Altererythrobacter luteolus SW-109T (97.3 %) and Altererythrobacter indicus MSSRF26T (95.0 %). The dominant cellular fatty acid was C18 : 1 (summed feature 7, 52.8 %). The major ubiquinone was UQ-10. The DNA G+C content was 63.1 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain MSW-14T and A. epoxidivorans KCCM 42314T and A. luteolus KCTC 12311T were 26.0–27.3 % and 9.8–15.2 %, respectively. On the basis of the data from the polyphasic characterization, strain MSW-14T represents a novel species, for which the name Altererythrobacter marensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MSW-14T (=KCTC 22370T=DSM 21428T).

A Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterium (WSF2T) was isolated from coastal seawater of the Boso Peninsula in Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WSF2T represented a separate lineage within the genus Pseudovibrio. The DNA G+C content of strain WSF2T was 51.7 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain WSF2T and the type strains of Pseudovibrio species were significantly lower than those accepted as the phylogenetic definition of a species. Furthermore, some biochemical characteristics indicated that strain WSF2T differed from other Pseudovibrio species. Based on these characteristics, it is proposed that the isolate represents a novel species, Pseudovibrio japonicus sp. nov. The type strain is WSF2T (=IAM 15442T=NCIMB 14279T=KCTC 12861T).

Five isolates, designated TA2, TA4, TA25T, KOxT and NS15T were isolated in previous studies by enrichment in mineral medium with potassium oxalate as the sole carbon source and were characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolates were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming rods. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA and DNA gyrase B subunit (gyrB) gene sequences confirmed that the isolates belonged to the genus Pandoraea and were most closely related to Pandoraea sputorum and Pandoraea pnomenusa (97.2–99.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The isolates could be differentiated from their closest relatives on the basis of several phenotypic characteristics. The major cellular fatty acid profiles of the isolates comprised C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c, C17 : 0 cyclo and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). On the basis of DNA–DNA hybridization studies and phylogenetic analyses, the isolates represent three novel species within the genus Pandoraea, for which the names Pandoraea oxalativorans sp. nov. (TA25T  = NBRC 106091T  = CCM 7677T  = DSM 23570T), Pandoraea faecigallinarum sp. nov. (KOxT  = NBRC 106092T  = CCM 2766T  = DSM 23572T) and Pandoraea vervacti sp. nov. (NS15T  = NBRC 106088T  = CCM 7667T  = DSM 23571T) are proposed.

Three actinomycetes (strains HKI 0478T, HKI 0479 and HKI 0480) isolated from the surfaces of rocks in the Feengrotten medieval alum slate mine (Thuringia, Germany) were examined in a polyphasic taxonomic study. The following morphological and chemotaxonomic features supported their classification as members of the genus Kribbella: the presence of ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan; glucose together with minor amounts of mannose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars; polar lipids comprising phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown phospho- and glycolipids; fatty acid profiles characterized by the predominance of anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 9-methyl; and the presence of MK-9(H4) as the main menaquinone. The isolates had almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences (99.9–100 %) and were most closely related to the type strains of Kribbella jejuensis (98.9 % sequence similarity), Kribbella swartbergensis and Kribbella solani (both 98.8 %). A wide range of genotypic and phenotypic markers as well as the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain HKI 0478T and the type strains of K. jejuensis (41.3 %), K. swartbergensis (18.6 %) and K. solani (14.2 %) distinguished the novel strains from their closest phylogenetic neighbours. On the basis of these results, strain HKI 0478T represents a novel member of the genus Kribbella, for which the name Kribbella aluminosa sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HKI 0478T (=DSM 18824T =JCM 14599T).

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, DSW-10T, was isolated from Dokdo, an island located at the edge of the East Sea, Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. This isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 4–5 % NaCl. Strain DSW-10T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 36·7 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSW-10T is phylogenetically affiliated to the genus Virgibacillus, and exhibited sequence similarity of 95·3–98·7 % to the type strains of Virgibacillus species. DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain DSW-10T and the type strains of some phylogenetically related Virgibacillus species were in the range 8·4–17·5 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-10T (=KCTC 3933T=DSM 16826T) was classified as the type strain of a novel Virgibacillus species, for which the name Virgibacillus dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A member of the genus Actinopolymorpha, designated PIP 143T, was isolated from the leaves of an Australian native apricot tree (Pittosporum phylliraeoides). The isolate was a Gram-reaction-positive, aerobic actinobacterium, with a well-developed substrate mycelium that fragmented into small rods. Phylogenetic evaluation based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed the isolate in the family Nocardioidaceae. Strain PIP 143T was most closely related to Actinopolymorpha cephalotaxi I06-2230T (98.7 %) and Actinopolymorpha rutila YIM 45725T (98.1 %). Chemotaxonomic data, including cell-wall components, menaquinones and fatty acids, confirmed the affiliation of strain PIP 143T to the genus Actinopolymorpha. Phylogenetic analysis and physiological and biochemical studies, in combination with DNA–DNA hybridization studies, allowed the differentiation of strain PIP 143T from its closest phylogenetic neighbours with validly published names. Therefore, a novel species is proposed, with the name Actinopolymorpha pittospori sp. nov. The type strain is PIP 143T ( = DSM 45354T  = ACM 5288T  = NRRL B-24810T).

Strain TS-56T was isolated from the gut of a wood-feeding termite, Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain represented a member of the genus Gryllotalpicola of the family Microbacteriaceae , with sequence similarities to other species of the genus ranging from 96.6 % to 97.8 %. The isolate was Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, with light yellow colonies and irregular short rod-shaped cells (0.4–0.6 µm in diameter, 0.6–1.0 µm in length). Growth of TS-56T occurred at 20–35 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and at pH 4.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 5.0). The peptidoglycan of TS-56T contained ornithine, glutamic acid, alanine, homoserine and glycine. The acyl type was acetyl. The most abundant cellular fatty acid of TS-56T was cyclohexyl-C17 : 0 (88.79 %). The respiratory menaquinone was MK-11. The polar lipid profile contained disphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and two unknown glycolipids. DNA of the type strain had a G+C content of 67.4 mol%. On the basis of the phylogenetic properties and phenotypic distinctiveness, TS-56T represents a novel species of the genus Gryllotalpicola , for which the name Gryllotalpicola reticulitermitis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TS-56T ( = CGMCC 1.10363T = NBRC 109838T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM1211T, was isolated from Antarctic seawater. The isolate grew at 4–35 °C and with 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl. It could produce bacteriochlorophyll a, but did not reduce nitrate to nitrite or hydrolyse DNA. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SM1211T constituted a distinct phylogenetic line within the family Rhodobacteraceae and was closely related to species in the genera Litorimicrobium , Leisingera , Seohaeicola and Phaeobacter with 95.1–96.0 % similarities. The predominant cellular fatty acid was C18 : 1ω7c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified phospholipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM1211T was 60.7 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data obtained in this study, strain SM1211T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus within the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Puniceibacterium antarcticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Puniceibacterium antarcticum is SM1211T ( = CCTCC AB 2013147T = KACC 16875T).

Strain JC268T was isolated from pebbles collected from a dam located in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Cells of strain JC268T were coccoid, appeared in pairs/triads/tetrads or short chains and were Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile and obligately aerobic. Strain JC268T was catalase- and oxidase-positive and utilized citrate for growth. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JC268T was 65.3 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained l-lysine–l-serine–d-aspartic acid as interpeptide bridge with the type A4α. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). Major (>10 %) fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C16 : 1H and anteiso-C17 : 1ω9c. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphoglycolipid, phosphatidylinositol, glycolipid, four unidentified lipids, an amino lipid and phospholipid were the polar lipids of strain JC268T. EzTaxon-e blast search of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JC268T has highest similarity to Barrientosiimonas humi 39T (98.65 %) and Tamlicoccus marinus MSW-24T (97.8 %) of the family Dermacoccaceae. Genome reassociation (based on DNA–DNA hybridization) of strain JC268T with Barrientosiimonas humi CGMCC 4.6864T ( = 39T) and T. marinus KCTC 19485T ( = MSW-24T) yielded values of 32.5 ± 2 % and 27.3 ± 2 %, respectively. Based on the data from phylogenetic and polyphasic taxonomic analyses, strain JC268T represents a novel species of the genus Barrientosiimonas for which the name Barrientosiimonas endolithica sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of Barrientosiimonas endolithica is JC268T ( = KCTC 29672T = NBRC 110608T). Our data suggest that T. marinus should be reclassified within the genus Barrientosiimonas. Thus, a reclassification is proposed for T. marinus, the type and only species of the genus Tamlicoccus, as Barrientosiimonas marina comb. nov., which implies the emendation of the description of the genus Barrientosiimonas.
