A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, short rod-shaped, non-motile bacterial strain designated 4M24T was isolated from cotton-waste compost. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain 4M24T revealed that it is a member of the genus Sphingobacterium, sharing 88.5–94.5 % sequence similarity with type strains of the genus Sphingobacterium and being most closely related to Sphingobacterium daejeonense TR6-04T (94.5 % sequence similarity) and Sphingobacterium mizutaii ATCC 33299T (92.2 % similarity). The major fatty acids of strain 4M24T grown on trypticase soy agar medium were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c; 37.5 %), iso-C15 : 0 (29.5 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (19.7 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 42.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain 4M24T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobacterium, for which the name Sphingobacterium composti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 4M24T (=KACC 11313T=DSM 18850T).

A dark-pink-coloured bacterial strain, B4Y-8T, was isolated from a soil cultivated with ginseng. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed highest similarity with Mucilaginibacter litoreus BR-18T (96.8 %), Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (96.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter defluvii A5T (96.2 %) among the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain B4Y-8T was a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterium producing a large amount of extracellular polymeric substance. The strain grew at 10–35 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 3.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain B4Y-8T was 49.0 mol%. It contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. On the basis of evidence from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain B4Y-8T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B4Y-8T ( = KACC 18152T = JCM 30759T).

Two bacterial strains isolated from different hospitals in Japan were subjected to a polyphasic analysis. Strains IFM 0406 and IFM 0706T, producers of novel terpenoid antibiotics, were found to have morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic properties consistent with their classification in the genus Nocardia, except for the presence of MK-8(H4) as one of the predominant menaquinones in addition to the major menaquinone MK-8(H4ω-cyc). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strains IFM 0406 and IFM 0706T was 99.9 %, and the closest members of Nocardia to these strains were the type strains of Nocardia nova and Nocardia mexicana, showing similarity of 97.5 and 97.1 %, respectively. Based on their characteristic phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, a novel species of the genus Nocardia, Nocardia terpenica sp. nov. is proposed for the two strains. The type strain is IFM 0706T (=JCM 13033T=DSM 44935T=NBRC 100888T).

A strictly aerobic, orange-pigmented and Gram-staining-negative bacterium, designated K17-16T, was isolated from seawater of Gangjin Bay, Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain K17-16T was a member of the genus Polaribacter in the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed 94.0–95.6 % sequence similarity with the type strains of recognized species of the genus Polaribacter. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 34.6 mol% and the major respiratory lipoquinone was MK-6. The major polar lipids detected were phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified amino-group-containing lipids and an unidentified aminophospholipid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (15.4 %), C15 : 0 (12.4 %), summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 10.6 %), C15 : 1ω6c (9.8 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (8.6 %). On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, strain K17-16T represents a novel species in the genus Polaribacter, for which the name Polaribacter gangjinensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is K17-16T ( = KCTC 22729T = JCM 16152T).

A Gram-negative, facultatively aerobic, oxidase- and catalase-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain E407-8T, was isolated from a sediment sample from the South China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain E407-8T was affiliated with the genus Rheinheimera, sharing the highest sequence similarity with Rheinheimera pacifica KMM 1406T (97.5 %) and Rheinheimera aquimaris SW-353T (97.4 %) and showing less than 97 % sequence similarity to the type strains of other recognized Rheinheimera species. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness of strain E407-8T to R. pacifica DSM 17616T and R. aquimaris JCM 14331T were 25.2 % (25.3 % in the duplicate measurement) and 9.4 % (6.5 %), respectively. The bacterium could grow at 10–48 °C (optimum 37 °C) and in the presence of 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5–2.5 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain E407-8T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C17 : 1ω8c, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-8. The DNA G+C content was 51.0 mol%. Based on the results of our polyphasic taxonomic study, strain E407-8T represents a novel species in the genus Rheinheimera, for which the name Rheinheimera nanhaiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is E407-8T ( = CCTCC AB 209089T  = KACC 14030T). An emended description of the genus Rheinheimera Brettar et al. 2002 emend. Merchant et al. 2007 is also proposed.

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

A Gram-negative, non-sporulating, non-flagellated rod, designated BR-9T, was isolated from soil collected on the Korean peninsula. Strain BR-9T grew optimally at pH 6.0–7.0, at 30 °C and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BR-9T belonged to the genus Pedobacter and clustered with Pedobacter insulae DS-139T and Pedobacter koreensis WPCB189T. Strain BR-9T exhibited 98.2 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis WPCB189T, respectively, and <96.7 % sequence similarity with the type strains of other species in the genus Pedobacter. Strain BR-9T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain BR-9T was 38.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain BR-9T and P. insulae DS-139T and P. koreensis KCTC 12536T was 3.4–4.2 %, which indicated that the isolate was genetically distinct from these type strains. Strain BR-9T was also distinguishable by differences in phenotypic properties. On the basis of the data presented, strain BR-9T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter boryungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BR-9T ( = KCTC 23344T  = CCUG 60024T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, Flavobacterium-like bacterial strain, DS-20T, was isolated from soil from the island of Dokdo, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain DS-20T grew optimally at pH 6.5–7.0 and 25 °C. It contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-20T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain DS-20T and the type strains of recognized Flavobacterium species were below 94.9 %. Strain DS-20T differed from phylogenetically related Flavobacterium species in several phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain DS-20T was classified in the genus Flavobacterium as representing a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-20T (=KCTC 12761T=DSM 17934T).

A Gram-negative, motile, strictly aerobic, violet-pigment-producing bacterium, designated strain FR1199T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Byunsan, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain FR1199T represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Pseudoalteromonas. The phenotypic features of strain FR1199T were similar to those of Pseudoalteromonas phenolica and Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea, but several physiological and chemotaxonomical properties readily distinguished strain FR1199T from these species. Major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0) and monounsaturated C18 : 1 ω7c fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 39 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is concluded that the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Pseudoalteromonas, for which the name Pseudoalteromonas byunsanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FR1199T (=JCM 12483T=KCTC 12274T).

Two bacterial strains, designated GH34-4T and GH41-7T, were isolated from greenhouse soil cultivated with cucumber. The bacteria were strictly aerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped and oxidase- and catalase-positive. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that these strains belong to the genus Lysobacter within the Gammaproteobacteria. Strain GH34-4T showed highest sequence similarity to Lysobacter yangpyeongensis GH19-3T (97.5 %) and Lysobacter koreensis Dae16T (96.4 %), and strain GH41-7T showed highest sequence similarity to Lysobacter antibioticus DSM 2044T (97.5 %), Lysobacter enzymogenes DSM 2043T (97.5 %) and Lysobacter gummosus ATCC 29489T (97.4 %). Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness indicated that strains GH34-4T and GH41-7T represented species clearly different from L. yangpyeongensis, L. antibioticus, L. enzymogenes and L. gummosus. The major cellular fatty acids of strains GH34-4T and GH41-7T were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, and the major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The DNA G+C contents of GH34-4T and GH41-7T were 62.5 and 66.6 mol%, respectively. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic data presented, it is evident that each of these strains represents a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the names Lysobacter niabensis sp. nov. (type strain GH34-4T=KACC 11587T=DSM 18244T) and Lysobacter niastensis sp. nov. (type strain GH41-7T=KACC 11588T=DSM 18481T) are proposed.

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.
