A strictly anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated BS-1T, was isolated from an anaerobic digestion reactor during a study of bacteria utilizing galactitol as the carbon source. Its cells were 0.3–0.5 μm × 2–4 μm, and they grew at 35–45 °C and at pH 6.0–8.0. Strain BS-1T produced H2, CO2, ethanol, acetic acid, butyric acid and caproic acid as metabolic end products of anaerobic fermentation. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, showed that strain BS-1T represented a novel bacterial genus within the family Ruminococcaceae, Clostridium Cluster IV. The type strains that were most closely related to strain BS-1T were Clostridium sporosphaeroides KCTC 5598T (94.5 %), Clostridium leptum KCTC 5155T (94.3 %), Ruminococcus bromii ATCC 27255T (92.1 %) and Ethanoligenens harbinense YUAN-3T (91.9 %). Strain BS-1T had 17.6 % and 20.9 % DNA–DNA relatedness values with C. sporosphaeroides DSM 1294T and C. leptum DSM 753T, respectively. The major components of the cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 dimethyl aldehyde (DMA) (22.1 %), C16 : 0 aldehyde (14.1 %) and summed feature 11 (iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and/or C18 : 2 DMA; 10.0 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 50.0 mol%. Phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics allowed strain BS-1T to be clearly distinguished from other taxa of the genus Clostridium Cluster IV. On the basis of these data, the isolate is considered to represent a novel genus and novel species within Clostridium Cluster IV, for which the name Caproiciproducens galactitolivorans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type species is BS-1T ( = JCM 30532T and KCCM 43048T).

AbstractA bacterial strain, designated WCA-9-b2, was isolated from the caecal content of an 18-week-old obese C57BL/6NTac male mouse. According to phenotypic analyses, the isolate is rod-shaped, Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, spore-forming and non-motile under the conditions tested. Bacterial colonies were irregular and non-pigmented. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Lachnospiraceae with Clostridium scindens ATTC 35704 (94.9% sequence identity) and Dorea formicigenerans ATCC 27755 (94.8%) being the closest relatives. Whole genome sequencing showed average nucleotide identity (ANI) ranging from 69.80–74.23% and percentage of conserved proteins (POCP) values < 50% against the nine closest relatives. The genome-based G+C content of genomic DNA was 44.4%. The predominant metabolic end products of glucose fermentation were acetate and succinate. Based on these data, we propose that strain WCA-9-b2 represents a novel species within a novel genus, for which the name Sporaefaciens musculi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Bacteria of the family Geobacteraceae are particularly common and deeply involved in many biogeochemical processes in terrestrial and freshwater environments. As part of a study to understand biogeochemical cycling in freshwater sediments, three iron-reducing isolates, designated as Red96T, Red100T, and Red88T, were isolated from the soils of two paddy fields and pond sediment located in Japan. The cells were Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped, motile, and red-pigmented on agar plates. Growth of these three strains was coupled to the reduction of Fe(III)-NTA, Fe(III) citrate, and ferrihydrite with malate, methanol, pyruvate, and various organic acids and sugars serving as alternate electron donors. Phylogenetic analysis based on the housekeeping genes (16S rRNA gene, gyrB, rpoB, nifD, fusA, and recA) and 92 concatenated core genes indicated that all the isolates constituted a coherent cluster within the family Geobacteraceae. Genomic analyses, including average nucleotide identity and DNA–DNA hybridization, clearly differentiated the strains Red96T, Red100T, and Red88T from other species in the family Geobacteraceae, with values below the thresholds for species delineation. Along with the genomic comparison, the chemotaxonomic features further helped distinguish the three isolates from each other. In addition, the lower values of average amino acid identity and percentage of conserved protein, as well as biochemical differences with their relatives, indicated that the three strains represented a novel genus in the family Geobacteraceae. Hence, we concluded that strains Red96T, Red100T, and Red88T represented three novel species of a novel genus in the family Geobacteraceae, for which the names Oryzomonas japonicum gen. nov., sp. nov., Oryzomonas sagensis sp. nov., and Oryzomonas ruber sp. nov. are proposed, with type strains Red96T (= NBRC 114286T = MCCC 1K04376T), Red100T (= NBRC 114287T = MCCC 1K04377T), and Red88T (= MCCC 1K03694T = JCM 33033T), respectively.

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium, designated MJ17T, was isolated from sludge at the Daejeon sewage disposal plant in South Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MJ17T belonged to the genus Paracoccus in the family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain MJ17T and type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus were 94.1–97.4 %. The highest similarities were between strain MJ17T and Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T, Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T and Paracoccus alcaliphilus JCM 7364T (97.4, 97.2 and 96.3 %, respectively). Strain MJ17T exhibited <22 % DNA–DNA relatedness with P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens JCM 21774T. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.7 mol%. Strain MJ17T contained ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were C18 : 0 (11.3 %), C16 : 0 (10.2 %) and summed feature 7 (containing one or more of C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9c and C18 : 1ω12t; 54.3 %). Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules are formed. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain MJ17T should be classified in a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ17T ( = KCTC 22480T  = JCM 16385T  = KEMB 9004-001T).

A novel bacterium was isolated from a freshwater hot spring, the Hale House Spring, located at Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs, AR, USA. Cells of strain MP-01T stained Gram-negative, were rod-shaped, non-motile, strictly anaerobic and chemo-organotrophic and did not form spores. Growth occurred at 50–65 °C, with an optimum at 60 °C, at pH 6.0–8.0, with an optimum at pH 6.5–7.0, and at NaCl concentrations up to 0.5 % (w/v), with optimum growth in the absence of NaCl. Strain MP-01T was capable of fermentative growth on pyruvate or proteinaceous substrates as well as reducing Fe(III) and Mn(IV). Major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-10. In the polyamine pattern, sym-homospermidine was the predominant compound. The DNA G+C content was 62.7 mol%. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate indicated that strain MP-01T represents the first reported cultivated member of subdivision 23 of the Acidobacteria . It is proposed that strain MP-01T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Thermoanaerobaculum aquaticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Thermoanaerobaculum aquaticum is MP-01T ( = DSM 24856T = JCM 18256T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium (designated strain Kw05T) was isolated from granules used in the wastewater treatment plant of a beer-brewing factory in Kwang-Ju, Republic of Korea. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain Kw05T was shown to belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae, and was most closely related to Flavobacterium limicola (96·6 %), Flavobacterium hibernum (96·3 %), Flavobacterium hydatis (96·1 %) and Flavobacterium xinjiangense (96·1 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain Kw05T was 36·2 mol%, within the range of 32–37 mol% for the genus Flavobacterium. Chemotaxonomic data (major menaquinone MK-6; major fatty acids iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c) supported the classification of strain Kw05T within the genus Flavobacterium. Kw05T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Flavobacterium granuli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Kw05T (=KCTC 12201T=IAM 15099T).

A thermophilic, alkaliphilic and catalase-positive bacterium, designated strain HA6T, was isolated from a hot spring in China. The strain was aerobic and chemo-organotrophic and grew optimally at 60 °C, pH 8.5 and 1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The cells were Gram-positive rods, forming single terminal endospores. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 45.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HA6T formed a distinct lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was most closely related to Bacillus horti K13T and Bacillus smithii DSM 4216T, with sequence similarities of 91.8 and 93.1 %, respectively. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, strain HA6T should be placed in a novel genus and species, for which the name Caldalkalibacillus thermarum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Caldalkalibacillus thermarum is strain HA6T (=CGMCC 1.4242T=JCM 13486T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated K19414T, was isolated from a chironomid (Diptera; Chironomidae) egg mass which was sampled from Kishon River in northern Israel. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence positioned the novel strain among the genus Rheinheimera, with closest similarity to Rheinheimera pacifica KMM 1406T. The levels of similarity to type strains of Rheinheimera species were lower than 96.5 %. Isolate K19414T is aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive; growth was observed at salinities of 0–2 % NaCl and the temperature for growth ranged from 4 to 40 °C. The major cellular fatty acids are 16 : 0 (14.8 %) and 16 : 1ω7c and/or 15 : 0 iso 2-OH (25.76 %). The DNA G+C content is 49.9 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain K19414T (=LMG 23818T =DSM 18694T) was classified in the genus Rheinheimera as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Rheinheimera chironomi sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel filamentous bacterium, designated strain JIR-001T, was isolated from hemipelagic sediment in deep seawater. This strain was non-motile, Gram-positive, aerobic, heterotrophic and thermophilic; colonies were of infinite form and ivory coloured with wrinkles between the centre and the edge of the colony on ISP2 medium. The isolate grew aerobically at 55–73 °C with the formation of aerial mycelia; spores were produced singly along the aerial mycelium. These morphological features show some similarities to those of the type strains of some species belonging to the family Thermoactinomycetaceae . Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that strain JIR-001T belongs to the family Thermoactinomycetaceae within the class Bacilli . Similarity levels between the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain JIR-001T and those of the type strains of Thermoactinomycetaceae species were 85.5–93.5 %; highest sequence similarity was with Melghirimyces algeriensis NariEXT. In the DNA–DNA hybridization assays between strain JIR-001T and its phylogenetic neighbours the mean hybridization levels with Melghirimyces algeriensis NariEXT, Planifilum fimeticola H0165T, Planifilum fulgidum 500275T and Planifilum yunnanense LA5T were 5.3–7.5, 2.3–4.7, 2.1–4.8 and 2.5–4.9 %, respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain JIR-001T was 55.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, glucolipid, phosphatidylserine, an amino-group containing phospholipid, an unknown phospholipid and two unknown lipids. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7 and the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, glutamic acid and alanine. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain JIR-001T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus of the family Thermoactinomycetaceae , for which the name Polycladomyces abyssicola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Polycladomyces abyssicola is JIR-001T ( = JCM 18147T = CECT 8074T).

A novel yellow-pigmented, agarolytic bacterial strain, designated ZC1T, was isolated from the surface of the marine red alga Porphyra haitanensis collected near Nan Ao Island, Guangdong province, China. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped and displayed β-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase and oxidase activities. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The DNA G+C content was 32.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZC1T was closely related to members of the genus Aquimarina in the family Flavobacteriaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes . Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain ZC1T ( = CCTCC AB 2010229T  = NBRC 107695T) represents the type strain of a novel species in the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina agarilytica sp. nov. is proposed.
