Strains Sr36T and TMT4-23T were isolated from No. 1 glacier in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Toumingmengke glacier in Gansu Province, PR China, respectively. They were Gram-stain-positive and rod-shaped micro-organisms. The optimum growth temperature of the two strains was 10–14 °C. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the two strains were related to members of the genus Cryobacterium . The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain Sr36T and its close relatives Cryobacterium luteum Hh15T, Cryobacterium aureum Hh31T, Cryobacterium levicorallinum Hh34T and Cryobacterium flavum Hh8T were 81.16–87.24 and 28.0–32.5 %, respectively. The ANI and dDDH values between strain TMT4-23T and its close relative Cryobacterium psychrotolerans 0549T were 81.16 and 22.3 %. The polar lipids of strain Sr36T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified glycolipid and three unidentified lipids. The polar lipids of strain TMT4-23T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified glycolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and six unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids of strain Sr36T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 1. The major fatty acids of strain TMT4-23T were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 1 and iso-C15 : 1. Both strains contained 2,4-diaminobutyric acid and their predominant menaquinone was MK-10. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, two novel species Cryobacterium ruanii sp. nov. (type strain = Sr36T=CGMCC 1.9275T=NBRC 113797T) and Cryobacterium breve sp. nov. (type strain =TMT4-23T=CGMCC 1.9556T=NBRC 113800T) are proposed.

Two bacterial strains, designated SS33T and Y03T, were isolated from marine sediment and marine red alga collected on the coast of Weihai, PR China. Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain SS33T was found to be closely related to Primorskyibacter marinus PX7T, Pelagivirga dicentrarchi YLY04T, Palleronia marisminoris DSM 26347T and Maribius pontilimi GH1-23T with 94.8, 94.6, 94.5 and 94.5 % sequence similarity; strain Y03T was found to be closest to Flavivirga aquimarina EC2D5T, Flavivirga eckloniae ECD14T and Flavivirga amylovorans JC2681T with 96.4, 96.1 and 96.0 % sequence similarity. Strain SS33T grew at 4–37 °C (optimum, 33 °C), at pH 6.0–9.5 (optimum, pH 7.5–8.0) and in the presence of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3.0 %). Chemotaxonomic analysis of strain SS33T showed that the predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) included C18 : 1  ω7c and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified glycolipid, one unidentified polar lipid and two unidentified aminolipids. Strain Y03T grew at 15–40 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0.5–9.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.0%). Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) included iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified polar lipids. Based on the polyphasic data, strain SS33T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Palleronia , for which the name Palleronia sediminis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain SS33T (=KCTC 62986T=MCCC 1H00387T). Strain Y03T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Flavivirga , for which the name Flavivirga algicola sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain Y03T (=KCTC 72001T=MCCC 1H00386T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, yellow bacterium, designated as LB1R16T, was isolated from the Laigu glacier on the Tibetan Plateau, PR China. Strain LB1R16T was catalase-positive, oxidase-negative and grew at 0–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0 and in the absence of NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain LB1R16T belongs to the family Sphingosinicellaceae but formed an independent lineage. The highest level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were found to Polymorphobacter arshaanensis DJ1R-1T (95.24 %), Sphingoaurantiacus capsulatus YLT33T (94.78 %) and Sandarakinorhabdus limnophila DSM 17366T (94.67 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 68.8 mol%. The main cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c/C18 : 1  ω6c), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c/C16 : 1  ω6c), C16 : 0 and C12 : 0-OH. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one sphingoglycolipid, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified polar lipids, which were different from the type strains of Polymorphobacter arshaanensis , Sphingoaurantiacus capsulatus and Sandarakinorhabdus limnophila . Based on a polyphasic approach, a novel species of a new genus, Glacieibacterium frigidum gen. nov., sp. nov., within the family Sphingosinicellaceae is proposed. The type strain is LB1R16T (=CGMCC 1.11941T=NBRC 113873T).

Two Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped, pink and light pink colony-forming bacteria, designated as Hz2T and MDT2-14T, respectively, were isolated from glacier cryoconite samples. Comparisons based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains Hz2T and MDT2-14T take Arthrobacter bussei KR32T and Arthrobacter zhaoguopingii J391T as their closest neighbours, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values between the two novel strains and their closest relatives were 83.56 and 93.06 %, respectively. The two strains contain MK-9(H2) as their predominant menaquinone. The polar lipids of both strains were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unidentified glycolipid. The major fatty acids of strain Hz2T were anteiso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c) and iso-C15 : 0, while the major fatty acids of strain MDT2-14T were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Based on these data, we propose two novel species, Arthrobacter cheniae sp. nov. (Hz2T = CGMCC 1.9262T=NBRC 113086T) and Arthrobacter frigidicola sp. nov. (MDT2-14T=CGMCC 1.9882T=NBRC 113089T).

Two novel actinomycetes, strains TA4-1T and TA4-8T, were isolated from the South-East Asian stingless bee (Tetragonilla collina Smith 1857), collected from Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of strains TA4-1T and TA4-8T were consistent with the genus Streptomyces , i.e. the formation of aerial mycelia bearing spiral spore chains, the presence of the ll-isomer of diaminopimelic acid in cell walls, iso- and anteiso-branched fatty acids with carbon chain lengths 14–17 atoms as the major fatty acids and MK-9(H8) as the predominant menaquinone plus minor amounts of MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H10). Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains TA4-1T and TA4-8T exhibited 98.8 and 98.1 % sequence similarity, respectively, with Streptomyces chromofuscus NRRL B-12175T and 98.9 % sequence similarity with each other. This study suggested that strains TA4-1T and TA4-8T were distinct from previously described species of the genus Streptomyces . In addition, the low degrees of DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolates and S. chromofuscus JCM 4354T warranted assigning strains TA4-1T and TA4-8T to two novel species. The names Streptomyces chiangmaiensis sp. nov. (type strain TA4-1T  = JCM 16577T  = TISTR 1981T) and Streptomyces lannensis sp. nov. (type strain TA4-8T  = JCM 16578T  = TISTR 1982T) are proposed. The species names indicate the geographical locations where the stingless bees reside.

A non-motile, yellow–orange-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HME6664T, was isolated from Lake Soyang, Republic of Korea. The major fatty acids of strain HME6664T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 44.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (20.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME6664T formed a lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter . Strain HME6664T was closely related to Mucilaginibacter ximonensis (96.7 %), Mucilaginibacter dorajii (96.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter lappiensis (96.3 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HME6664T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter soyangensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is HME6664T ( = KCTC 23261T = CECT 7824T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, aerobic, curved rod-shaped bacterium, designed strain R142T, was isolated from a coralline algae Tricleocarpa sp. in the Beibu Gulf, China. Optimal growth occurred with 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl, at 25 °C and at pH 8. Global alignment based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R142T shared 93.8 % similarity with its closest type strain, Pseudomaricurvus alkylphenolicus KU14GT. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain R142T forms a distinct branch alongside Maricurvus nonylphenolicus KU41ET, Pseudoteredinibacter isoporae SW-11T, Pseudomaricurvus alkylphenolicus KU14GT, Pseudomaricurvus alcaniphilus MEBiC06469T and Aestuariicella hydrocarbonica SM-6T. The major polar lipids of strain R142T were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The primary cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 0 and C14 : 0. The genome DNA G+C ratio was 56.4 mol%. The only detected respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8. The low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and differences in cellular fatty acids readily distinguished strain R142T from all validly published type strains. Strain R142T is therefore suggested to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Exilibacterium tricleocarpae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Exilibacterium tricleocarpae is R142T (=MCCC 1K03816T=KCTC 72138T).

A polyphasic taxonomic study was carried out on strains CHu50b-3-2T and CHu40b-3-1 isolated from a 67 cm-long sediment core collected from the Daechung Reservoir at a water depth of 17 m, Daejeon, Republic of Korea. The cells of the strains were Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile and rod-shaped. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies showed a clear affiliation of two strains with γ-Proteobacteria, which showed the highest pairwise sequence similarities to Lysobacter hankyongensis KTce-2T (96.5 %), Lysobacter pocheonensis Gsoil193T (96.3 %), Lysobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 357T (96.1 %), Lysobacter solanacearum T20R-70T (96.1 %), Lysobacter brunescens KCTC 12130T (95.4 %) and Lysobacter capsici YC5194T (95.3 %). The phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strains formed a clear phylogenetic lineage with the genus Lysobacter . The major fatty acids were identified as summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1  ω9c and/or C18 : 1 10-methyl), iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The respiratory quinone was identified as ubiquinone Q-8. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was determined to be 66.8 mol% (genome) for strain CHu50b-3-2T and 66.4 mol% (HPLC) for strain CHu40b-3-1. Based on the combined genotypic and phenotypic data, we propose that strains CHu50b-3-2T and CHu40b-3-1 represent a novel species of the genus Lysobacter , for which the name Lysobacter profundi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CHu50b-3-2T (=KCTC 72973T=CCTCC AB 2019129T). Besides Lysobacter panaciterrae Gsoil 068T formed a phylogenetic group together with strain Luteimonas aquatica RIB1-20T (EF626688) that is clearly separated from all other known Lysobacter strains. Based on the phylogenetic relationships together with fatty acid compositions, Lysobacter panaciterrae Gsoil 068T should be reclassified as a member of the genus Luteimonas: Luteimonas aquatica comb. nov. (type strain Gsoil 068T=KCTC 12601T=DSM 17927T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile bacterial strains, 36D10-4-7T and 30C10-4-7T, were isolated from bark canker tissue of Populus × euramericana, respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 36D10-4-7T shows 98.0 % sequence similarity to Sphingomonas adhaesiva DSM 7418T, and strain 30C10-4-7T shows highest sequence similarity to Sphingobacterium arenae H-12T (95.6 %). Average nucleotide identity analysis indicates that strain 36D10-4-7T is a novel member different from recognized species in the genus Sphingomonas . The main fatty acids and respiratory quinone detected in strain 36D10-4-7T are C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c and Q-10, respectively. The polar lipids are diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, aminolipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, two uncharacterized phospholipids and two uncharacterized lipids. For strain 30C10-4-7T, the major fatty acids and menaquinone are iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and MK-7, respectively. The polar lipid profile includes phosphatidylethanolamine, phospholipids, two aminophospholipids and six unidentified lipids. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, these two strains represent two novel species within the genera Sphingomonas and Sphingobacterium . The name Sphingomonas corticis sp. nov. (type strain 36D10-4-7T=CFCC 13112T=KCTC 52799T) and Sphingobacterium corticibacterium sp. nov. (type strain 30C10-4-7T=CFCC 13069T=KCTC 52797T) are proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium was isolated from a liquid culture of dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae and further designated as LMIT004T. Optimal growth was observed at 25 °C, pH 7.0 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Oxidase and catalase were positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LMIT004T showed high similarities to type strains Muricauda nanhaiensis SM17004T (96.77 %) and Muricauda aquimarina JCM11811T (95.60 %) but formed a separate branch in the genus Muricauda . The G+C content of strain LMIT004T was 39.0 mol%. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipids mainly contained phosphatidylethanolamine, five unidentified phospholipids and five unidentified polar lipids. The sole respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The draft genome of the type strain was 3.88 Mbp. The average nucleotide identity values between strain LMIT004T and the two reference strains M. nanhaiensis SM17004T and M. aquimarina JCM11811T were 77.47 and 73.49 %, respectively. Based on the polyphasic analysis, strain LMIT004T is suggested to represent a novel specie in the genus of Muricauda , for which the name Muricauda amphidinii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMIT004T (=CICC 24871T=KCTC 72948T).

A coccal strain isolated from fresh broccoli was initially identified as Enterococcus saccharolyticus ; however, molecular identification and phenotypic traits did not support this identification. DNA–DNA hybridization with the type strain of E. saccharolyticus (76.4 % relatedness), DNA G+C content (35.7 mol%), phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences, rep-PCR fingerprinting and profiles of cellular fatty acids, whole-cell proteins and enzyme activities, together with carbohydrate metabolism characteristics, indicated that this strain is distinct and represents a novel subspecies, for which the name Enterococcus saccharolyticus subsp. taiwanensis subsp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 812T ( = NBRC 109476T = BCRC 80575T). Furthermore, we present an emended description of Enterococcus saccharolyticus and proposal of Enterococcus saccharolyticus subsp. saccharolyticus subsp. nov. (type strain ATCC 43076T = CCUG 27643T = CCUG 33311T = CIP 103246T = DSM 20726T = JCM 8734T = LMG 11427T = NBRC 100493T = NCIMB 702594T).
