Quantifying ecoacoustic activity in the Amazon rainforest through Information Theory quantifiers

AbstractAutomatic monitoring of biodiversity by acoustic sensors has become an indispensable tool to assess environmental stress at an early stage. Due to the difficulty in recognizing the Amazon’s high acoustic diversity and the large amounts of raw audio data recorded by the sensors, the labeling and manual inspection of this data is not feasible.Therefore, we propose an ecoacoustic index that allows us to quantify the complexity of an audio segment and correlate this measure with the biodiversity of the soundscape. The approach uses unsupervised methods to avoid the problem of labeling each species individually. The proposed index, named the Ecoacoustic Global Complexity Index (EGCI), makes use of Entropy, Divergence and Statistical Complexity. A distinguishing feature of this index is the mapping of each audio segment, including those of varied lenghts, as a single point in a 2D-plane, supporting us in understanding the ecoacoustic dynamics of the rainforest. The main results show a regularity in the ecoacoustic richness of a floodplain, considering different temporal granularities, be it between hours of the day or between consecutive days of the monitoring program. We observed that this regularity does a good job of characterizing the soundscape of the environmental protection area of Mamirauá, in the Amazon, differentiating between species richness and environmental phenomena.

In 2018–2019, we conducted mosquito collections in a municipal vehicle impound yard, which is 10 km from the Serra do Mar Environmental Protection Area in Santo André, SP, Brazil. Our aim is to study arboviruses in the impound yard, to understand the transmission of arboviruses in an urban environment in Brazil. We captured the mosquitoes using human-landing catches and processed them for arbovirus detection by conventional and quantitative RT-PCR assays. We captured two mosquito species, Aedes aegypti (73 total specimens; 18 females and 55 males) and Ae. albopictus (34 specimens; 27 females and 7 males). The minimum infection rate for DENV-2 was 11.5 per 1000 (CI95%: 1–33.9). The detection of DENV-2 RNA in an Ae. albopictus female suggests that this virus might occur in high infection rates in the sampled mosquito population and is endemic in the urban areas of Santo André. In addition, Guadeloupe mosquito virus RNA was detected in an Ae. aegypti female. To our knowledge, this was the first detection of the Guadeloupe mosquito virus in Brazil.

The monitoring of surface waters is of fundamental importance for their preservation under good quantitative and qualitative conditions, as it can facilitate the understanding of the actual status of water and indicate suitable management actions. Taking advantage of the experience gained from the coordination of the national water monitoring program in Greece and the available funding from two ongoing infrastructure projects, the Institute of Inland Waters of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research has developed the first homogeneous real-time network of automatic water monitoring across many Greek rivers. In this paper, its installation and maintenance procedures are presented with emphasis on the data quality checks, based on values range and variability tests, before their online publication and dissemination to end-users. Preliminary analyses revealed that the water pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors and produced data need increased maintenance and quality checks respectively, compared to the more reliably recorded water stage, temperature (T) and electrical conductivity (EC). Moreover, the data dissemination platform and selected data visualization options are demonstrated and the need for both this platform and the monitoring network to be maintained and potentially expanded after the termination of the funding projects is highlighted.

ABSTRACT Dimorphandra mollis is native to the Brazilian Savanna and has social, economic and environmental importance. This study aimed to evaluate the yield and diametric distribution of Dimorphandra mollis Benth. in the Pandeiros River Environmental Protection Area, in Bonito de Minas, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Five areas were assessed, totaling five hectares (50 plots of 1,000 m2). The total number of plants, yield per plant (2018, 2019 and 2020) and diameter at breast height were recorded, considering all trees from the plots in diametric classes. The average diameter at breast height of all plants was 6.05 ± 3.07 cm, and that of the plants that produced in at least one of the evaluated years was 7.46 ± 3.15 cm. The diametric distribution showed classes with no individuals, indicating imbalance, as well as a trend to inverted “J” shape. The maximum annual yield was 8.08 kg ha-1 of dry fruits (2019), the minimum 0.42 kg ha-1 (2018), and the average 2.74 kg ha-1, with biennial characteristic.

The present work aimed to examine the potentials of SAR RADARSAT-1 images to detect emergent coral reefs at the Environmental Protection Area of "Costa dos Corais". Multi-view filters were applied and tested for speckle noise reduction. A digital unsupervised classification based on image segmentation was performed and the classification accuracy was evaluated by an error matrix built between the SAR image classification and a reference map obtained from a TM Landsat-5 classification. The adaptative filters showed the best results for speckle suppression and border preservation, especially the Kuan, Gamma MAP, Lee, Frost and Enhanced Frost filters. Small similarity and area thresholds (5 and 10, respectively) were used for the image segmentation due to the reduced dimensions and the narrow and elongated forms of the reefs. The classification threshold of 99% had a better user's accuracy, but a lower producer's accuracy because it is a more restrictive threshold; therefore, it may be possible that it had a greater omission on reef classification. The results indicate that SAR images have a good potential for the detection of emergent coral reefs.

Abstract Amphibian research has grown steadily in recent years in the Amazon region, especially in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, and Amapá, and neighboring areas of the Guiana Shield. Even so, few data are available for the Amazonian savannas of Brazil. To contribute to the understanding of the diversity of the amphibians of these savannas, we surveyed 15 temporary ponds, six located in open areas, seven on the edge of savanna forest, and two within the forest, in the savanna of the Rio Curiaú Environmental Protection Area (EPA) in Macapá, in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. Sampling occurred from May 2013 to August 2014 during periods when the ponds contained water. Amphibians were sampled through visual and auditory surveys conducted during both the day- and the nighttime periods on seven days each month over a total of 84 days. A total of 1574 individuals belonging to four families, 12 genera, and 28 species were recorded during the surveys. The cumulative species curve reached the asymptote, indicating that sampling effort was adequate. The number of species was 25% higher than that reported in other studies in Amazonian savannas. Twelve species were recorded for the first time in the savanna of Amapá. Lysapsus boliviana was the most common species (n = 332 of the individuals recorded). The greatest amphibian species richness found in the Rio Curiaú EPA was associated with the savanna mosaic, forest patches, lowland swamp, and temporary ponds. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the diversity of amphibian species in the Guianan area of endemism in northern Brazil, and also the Amazonian savannas.

AbstractThis review aims to study the main aspects of Maranhense East Mesoregion Biogeography of the state portion has suffered socio-economic and cultural changes, besides environmental conflicts due to the advance of capitalist agriculture as soy and eucalyptus agribusiness. The Maranhense East Mesoregion is formed by the union of 44cities grouped into six microregions: Chapadinha, Coelho Neto, Baixo Parnaíba Maranhense, Chapada do Alto Itapecuru, Codó, and Caxias. Historically, this mesoregion had its occupation linked to peripheral areas to the large cotton plantations of the Itapecuru and cattle creation in Pastos Bons, in the XVII and XVIII century. The economy of this mesoregion is mainly based on Eucalyptus for pulp and paper, soybean, maize, and sugarcane. It must be emphasized that the introduction of the soybean, sugarcane, the expansion of eucalyptus and the charcoal production increased the pollution of the rivers and the destruction of native resources. The lack of inspection as to legal reserve areas in rural properties and the lack of conservation units in this region may be considered as aggravating in relation to the intense expansion of agricultural activities. The vegetation of the Maranhense East Mesoregion encompasses several formations, being basically characterized by the forests of babassu and the areas of cerrado latu senso, besides the small patches of Caatinga near the border with the state of Piaui and transitional formations. The climate is typical of tropical zones, predominantly As in the Parnaíba Delta region and the Aw throughout the rest of the mesoregion, with annual average temperatures between 24°C to 28°C and precipitation index with values between 1800mm to 1000mm. The studied mesoregion has only five Conservation Unit: Mirador State Park, Morros Garapenses State Environmental Protection Area, Parnaíba Delta Environmental Protection Area, Parnaíba Delta Marine Extractive Reserve, Chapada Limpa Extractive Reserve.Keywords: Maranhão geography. Deve-se ressaltar que a introdução da soja, da cana-de-açúcar, a expansão do eucalipto e a produção de carvão vegetal aumentaram a poluição dos rios e a destruição de recursos nativos. A falta de fiscalização quanto às áreas de reserva legal nas propriedades rurais e a falta de unidades de conservação nesta região, podem ser consideradas como agravantes em relação à expansão intensa das atividades agropecuárias. A cobertura vegetal da mesorregião Leste maranhense engloba várias formações, sendo basicamente caracterizada pelas florestas de babaçu e pelas áreas de cerrado lato senso, além das pequenas manchas de caatinga próximas à fronteira com o estado do Piauí e formações transicionais. O clima da região é característico das zonas tropicais, predominantemente As na região doDelta do Parnaíba e o Aw em todo o restante da mesorregião, com temperaturas médias anuais entre 24 °C até 28 °C e índices de precipitação pluviométrica com valores entre 1800 mm a 1000 mm. A mesorregião estudada apresenta apenas cinco Unidades de Conservação: Parque Estadual do Mirador, Área de Proteção Ambiental Estadual dos Morros Garapenses, Área de Proteção Ambiental do Delta do Parnaíba, Reserva Extrativista Marinha do Delta do Parnaíba, Reserva Extrativista de Chapada Limpa.Palavras-chave: Geografia do Maranhão. Connatural alterations can be deformations or malformations discovered in the embryonic development phase of the animal, which can disguise structures or roles of the systems. Congenital disorders can range from small changes, slight changes, serious adulterations and also genetic inconsistencies. There are no apparent defined reasons, and these changes may be caused by environmental and genetic factors. Pigopagus twins are joined at the back, have a coccyx, the gastrointestinal tract may have a single or separate rectum, a single bladder in some cases and obligatorily separate spinal cord and always with sharing of the pelvic bones. The ischiopagus are united by the ventral region from the navel to the pelvis, two sacrum and two pubic symphysis, in addition to a single gastrointestinal tract and a varied number of limbs. Reporting and discussing the morphological and anatomical deformities presented in a species of Squalus acanthias, recorded by LOPES in 2020, is a big step to better understand the anatomy and physiology of animals, which are considered the top of the food chain in the oceans and are in serious trouble. risk of extinction. RESUMO Alterações conaturais podem ser deformações ou más-formações descobertas na fase de desenvolvimento embrionário do animal, podendo disfarçar estruturas ou papéis dos sistemas. Os distúrbios congênitos podem ocorrer desde pequenas mudanças, alterações leves, adulterações sérias e também incoerências genéticas. Não existem motivos aparentes definidos, podendo estas alterações serem causados por fatores ambientais e genéticos. Os gêmeos Pigopagus são unidos pelo dorso, apresentam um coccix, o trato gastrointestinal pode apresentar reto único ou separado, bexiga única em alguns casos e obrigatoriamente medula espinhal separada e sempre com compartilhamento dos ossos pélvicos. Os isquiópagos apresentam-se unidos pela região ventral do umbigo à pelve, dois sacros e duas sínfises púpicas além de tratos gastrointestinal único e número de membros variados. Relatar e discutir as deformidades morfológicas e anatômicas apresentadas em uma especie de Squalus acanthias, registrada por LOPES em 2020, é um grande passo para entender melhor a anatomia e fisiologia de animais, que são considerados o topo da cadeia alimentar nos oceanos e correm um sério risco de extinção.
