AbstractHypostomus subcarinatus Castelnau, 1855 is rediscovered in the Pampulha lake, an urban lake pertaining to the rio das Velhas basin in the rio São Francisco system in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Herein, H. subcarinatus is redescribed and its diagnosis from the congeners is established due to characters such as blue tan dorsal fin in live specimens, slender bicuspid teeth, dentaries angled more than 90 degrees, moderate keels along lateral series of plates, small roundish dark spots, one plate bordering supraoccipital, by having nuptial odontodes mainly on pectoral, dorsal and caudal-fin rays, and longer anal-fin unbranched ray. The rediscovery of H. subcarinatus after more than 160 years after its original description was one unexpected event, because the Pampulha lake is an artificial, shallow and polluted urban lake. The lake is located in the downtown of municipality of Belo Horizonte, the third largest urban agglomeration in Brazil with a population exceeding 5.9 million inhabitants. In the light of this finding we address the importance of urban body waters to maintenance of fish biodiversity in the neotropics.

Mugil setosus Gilbert 1892 was originally described by Gilbert based on specimens from Clarion Island, in the western and most remote of the Revillagigedo Islands, about 1,000 km off the western Pacific coast of Mexico. Examination of the type of material and recently collected specimens from Ecuador and Peru, resulted in the redescription provided herein. Diagnostic characters of the species were mainly: tip of the pelvic fin reaching beyond the vertical through the base of the third dorsal-fin spine, the pectoral-fin rays with ii+13–14 rays, the anterodorsal tip of second (soft) dorsal fin uniformly dark, and an external row of larger teeth, and more internally a patch of scattered smaller teeth, visible mainly in adults 150 mm SL. The expansion of geographic distribution of Mugil setosus and occurrence of Mugil curema Valenciennes 1836 in the Pacific Ocean are discussed.

The third known species in the genus Colletteichthys is described from Sri Lanka and India. Colletteichthys flavipinnisdiffers from C. dussumieri in having one instead of two or more tentacles above the eye. It differs from both C. occidentalisand C. dussumieri in having yellow-orange fins, and from C. occidentalis in usually having 16 instead of 15 anal-fin raysand 20 instead of 19 dorsal-fin rays, and in having a slightly smaller ( 1–2% SL) eye. Mitochondrial COI barcode interspecific distance is 4.4% between C. flavippinis and C. dussumieri.

The new waspfish Ocosia dorsomaculata n. sp. (Tetrarogidae) is described, based on specimens from Australia (5) and New Caledonia (51). Although O. dorsomaculata and Ocosia apia Poss & Eschmeyer 1975 both share modally XVI, 8 dorsal-fin rays with a long second dorsal-fin spine, and presence of supraocular, lateral lacrimal, and suborbital spines, the former has modally 13 pectoral-fin rays (vs. usually 12 in the latter), a lower modal count of total gill rakers (10 vs. 16–18), greater upper-jaw length, greater third to sixth dorsal-fin spine lengths, the third dorsal-fin spine slightly shorter than the second dorsal-fin spine (vs. third spine markedly shorter than second spine), 1 or 2 prominent pale brown to dark brown blotches on the membrane between the fifth to eighth or sixth to ninth dorsal-fin spines (vs. 1 blotch on the membrane around the third dorsal-fin spine and 1 blotch on the membrane between the sixth to eighth dorsal-fin spines), and body with 11–15 longitudinal pale brown to dark brown bars along lateral line (vs. irregular brown specks). A key to the species of Ocosia is given.

Listrura picinguabae, new species, is described from small tributary streams of rio da Fazenda, an isolated coastal river in Picinguaba, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. It is distinguished from all other trichomycterids, except L. nematopteryx, in possessing a single long pectoral-fin ray. It differs from L. nematopteryx by a combination of features including relative position of anal and dorsal-fin origins, higher number of anal-fin rays and opercular and interopercular odontodes, and morphology of the urohyal.

The taxonomic status of the Bay of Bengal nominal sparid species Coius datnia Hamilton, 1822 and Acanthopagrus longispinnis (Valenciennes, 1830) are reviewed and investigated both morphologically and genetically. Because of inadequate description and no type specimen, Coius datnia has recently been considered to belong to Sparidentex, a genus without molarifom teeth. Critical examination of the original description and examination of specimens from the type locality and adjacent areas reveal that Coius datnia belongs to Acanthopagrus, a genus with an inner series of molars. Furthermore, examination of specimens previously recognized as Acanthopagrus longispinnis (Valenciennes 1830), and recent collection of fresh specimens from lower Ganges estuary in Bangladesh, show that morphological differences between Acanthopagrus datnia and A. longispinnis are minor, and they are genetically identical. The longer second anal-fin spine in A. longispinnis (>21% SL) is, in fact, a feature of some younger A. datnia. Accordingly, A. datnia is regarded as a senior synonym of A. longispinnis, and is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of 12 dorsal-fin spines (rarely 11 or 13), 3½ scale rows between the fifth dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line, pelvic and anal-fins pale yellow to yellow with black streaks present in the interradial membranes of anal-fin rays, and caudal fin grey or yellowish grey. A neotype (and neogenotype) has been designated for Acanthopagrus datnia (Hamilton, 1822).

Apogon brevispinis is described from two specimens, the larger of which is missing the caudal peduncle, collected at the Austral Islands. This species has a tiny first dorsal-fin spine (5-8% of the third dorsal-fin spine length), 18-19 well-developed gill rakers on first arch, 5 predorsal scales, elongated last soft dorsal and anal fin-rays, 14 circumpeduncular scales, 5 broad tan-brown stripes alternating with 5 narrow whitish stripes, and an irregular dark caudal peduncle mark. Apogon regula is described from five specimens collected in Guam and the Carolina Islands. This species has a longer first dorsal-fin spine (10-15% of the third dorsal-fin spine length), 13-14 well-developed gill rakers on first arch, 4 predorsal scales, 12-13 circumpeduncular scales 5 broad golden-brown stripes alternating with 4 narrow whitish stripes, and dark brown broad stripes on the upper and lower caudal peduncle.

Aphoristia (= Symphurus) orientalis Bleeker 1879, collected from an unspecified depth and location in Japanese waters, is the first described species of symphurine tonguefish from Indo-Pacific waters. The original description with accompanying illustration is based on the unique holotype specimen and provides limited diagnostic characters for this taxon. Subsequent to its description, the holotype of A. orientalis has been lost. Limited diagnostic information and loss of the holotype have caused considerable confusion to subsequent systematic studies regarding the identity of this and similar tonguefish species occurring in the Indo-West Pacific region. Several, often-cited, taxonomic accounts purportedly redescribing S. orientalis are erroneous because they include more than one species in these redescriptions. These erroneous redescriptions not only confused the species concept of S. orientalis (Bleeker), but also confounded the systematics of similar Indo-West Pacific tonguefishes. Symphurus novemfasciatus Shen and Lin, described on two specimens collected in southern Taiwan, shares many morphological and pigmentation features similar to those of S. orientalis. Morphological data from a large series of tonguefishes collected in Taiwanese and Japanese waters, as well as molecular data from a smaller number of specimens from these locations, including the type locality of S. novemfasciatus, confirm the presence of only one species, S. orientalis (Bleeker), among these specimens. Symphurus novemfasciatus Shen and Lin is therefore regarded as a junior subjective synonym of S. orientalis. Symphurus orientalis is redefined based on a large series of specimens identified by a consistent set of morphological criteria, and a neotype is designated to stabilize nomenclature and systematics of this species. Symphurus orientalis differs from congeners by its combination of: a predominant 1–2–2–2–2 pattern of interdigitation of proximal dorsal-fin pterygiophores and neural spines, 12 caudal-fin rays, 9 abdominal and 52–55 total vertebrae, four hypurals, 96–101 dorsal-fin rays, 82–89 anal-fin rays, 87–99 longitudinal scale rows, 37–42 transverse scales, 5–11 (usually) distinct, complete or incomplete, blackish-brown crossbands on the ocular side, uniformly white blind side, and conspicuous bluish-black peritoneum. Documenting morphological variation for S. orientalis represents the most important step towards clarification of the identity of this and other symphurine tonguefish species from this region. Reliable identification of specimens of S. orientalis also provides the foundation for evaluating the status of several other, poorly-known, nominal species of Indo-West Pacific tonguefishes that have features similar to those of S. orientalis. Improved identifications will lead to better knowledge on the geographic distribution of S. orientalis and these other species, as well as to improve estimates of biodiversity and the biogeography of Indo-West Pacific symphurine tonguefishes.

Resumo:  Apresenta-se uma discussão sobre o conhecimento e a tese dos três mundos no qual a interação entre estes nos aproxima da verdade do problema corpo-mente, tendo em vista, uma nova proposta de solução. O terceiro mundo é uma peça importante neste trabalho; sendo assim, analisaremos o que Popper designa como Mundo 3, em que ele consiste e o papel da linguagem como diferencial do ser humano. Apresentamos as críticas popperianas às correntes monistas e dualistas, ousando fazer uma crítica a Teoria do Conhecimento tradicional. Desta forma, a proposta apresentada por este filósofo da ciência diferencia-se de tudo que estava sendo feito até então, por isso, o interesse de apresentar essa abordagem pouco trabalhada de Popper. Palavras-chave: Conhecimento. Mundo 3.Abstract: In this work, we present a discussion about knowledge and the theory of the three worlds in which the interaction between them approaches to the truth of the mind-body problem, in view of a proposed solution. The third world is an important piece in this work. Therefore, we will analyze what Popper describes as World 3, what it is and the role of language as a differential of human beings. We present Popper’s criticisms to the monistic and dualistic currents, daring to criticize the theory of traditional knowledge. Thus, the proposal of science presented by this philosopher differs from everything that was being done until then. This report documents a project undertaken for the California Urban Water Conservation Council to create a method to calculate water utility avoided costs and assign economic value to the environmental benefits of raw water savings as a result of implementing urban water conservation programs. It is assumed that water savings associated with implementation of conservation programs can be quantified and represented as a reduction in the demand for water from a particular set of supply sources. This demand reduction may in turn result in a change to the availability of an environmental benefit provided by that source. Environmental valuation, as it is applied here, is relatively new and there are numerous complications, ambiguities, data gaps and differences of opinion in the application of the methodology. For that reason, this report should be considered a pioneering effort to put together all the required elements in a single coherent framework.

The genus Homalopteroides Fowler 1905 is resurrected and distinguished from the genus Homaloptera van Hasselt 1823based on a combination of characters including a unique mouth morphology, dorsal-fin origin over pelvic fin,≤60 lateral-line scales, and≤30 predorsal scales. Species included in Homalopteroides are H. wassinkii (Bleeker 1853), H. modestus(Vinciguerra 1890), H. rupicola (Prashad & Mukerji 1929), H. smithi (Hora 1932), H. stephensoni (Hora 1932), H. weberi(Hora 1932), H. tweediei (Herre 1940), H. indochinensis (Silas 1953), H. nebulosus (Alfred 1969), H. yuwonoi (Kottelat1998), and possibly H. manipurensis (Arunkumar 1999). Homalopteroides modestus (Vinciguerra 1890) is a poorlyknown species that was originally described from the Meekalan and Meetan rivers of southern Myanmar. It occurs in theSalween, Mae Khlong, and Tenasserim basins, and can be distinguished from all other species of Homalopteroides by thecombination of caudal-fin pattern (black proximal and distal bars, median blotch), 15 pectoral-fin rays, pectoral-fin lengthgreater than head length, 5½–6½ scales above and 5–6 scales below the lateral line (to the pelvic fin), 39–44 total lateral-line pores, no axillary pelvic-fin lobe, pelvic fin not reaching anus, orbital length less than interorbital width in adult, and maxillary barbel reaching to or slightly past the anterior orbital rim.
