AbstractHow drastic changes in selective regimes affect trait evolution is an important open biological question. We take advantage of naturally occurring and repeated transitions from sexual to asexual reproduction in a New Zealand freshwater snail species to address how relaxed selection on male-specific traits influences sperm morphology. The occasional production of male offspring by the otherwise all-female asexual lineages allows a unique and powerful opportunity to assess the fate of sperm traits in a context where males are unnecessary. These comparisons revealed that the sperm produced by “asexual” males are markedly distinct from sexual counterparts. In particular, the asexual male sperm harbored markedly higher phenotypic variation and was much more likely to be morphologically abnormal. Together, these data suggest that transitions to asexual reproduction might be irreversible at least in part because male function is likely to be compromised. More broadly, our results are consistent with a scenario where relaxed selection translates into rapid trait degeneration.

Once-useful traits that no longer contribute to fitness tend to decay over time. We address whether the expression of mating-related traits that increase the fitness of sexually reproducing individuals but are likely less useful or even costly to asexual counterparts seems to exhibit decay in the latter. Potamopyrgus antipodarum is a New Zealand freshwater snail characterized by repeated transitions from sexual to asexual reproduction. The frequent coexistence of sexual and asexual lineages makes P. antipodarum an excellent model for the study of mating-related trait loss. We used a mating choice assay including sexual and asexual P. antipodarum females and conspecific (presumed better choice) vs. heterospecific (presumed worse choice) males to evaluate the loss of behavioural traits related to sexual reproduction. We found that sexual females engaged in mating behaviours with conspecific mating partners more frequently and for a greater duration than with heterospecific mating partners, while asexual females seemed to lack the ability to make a choice. These results suggest that selection acting to maintain mate choice in asexual P. antipodarum is weak or ineffective relative to sexual females and that asexual reproduction likely contributes to the evolutionary decay of behavioural traits in this system.

One of the unifying traits of life on this planet is reproduction, or life's ability to make copies of itself. The mode of reproduction has evolved over time, having almost certainly begun with simple asexual reproduction when the ancestral single celled organism divided into two. Since these beginnings' life has tried out numerous strategies, and perhaps one of the most important and successful has been sexual reproduction. This form of reproduction relies on the union of gametes, otherwise known as sperm and egg. Evolutionarily, sexual reproduction allows for greater adaptive potential because the genes of two unique individuals have a chance to recombine and mix in order to produce a new individual. Unlike asexual reproduction which produces genetically-identical clones of the parent individual, sex produces offspring with novel genes and combinations of genes. Therefore, in the face of new selective pressures there is a higher chance that one of these novel genetic profiles will produce an adaptation that is advantageous in the new circumstances. Dr Akihiko Watanabe is a reproductive biologist based in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science Yamagata University in Japan, he is currently working on three research projects; a comparative study on the signalling pathways for inducing sperm motility and acrosome reaction in amphibians, the mechanism behind the adaptive modification of sperm morphology and motility, and the origin of sperm motility initiating substance (SMIS).

The described species of the genus Dodecaceria are reviewed. Fourteen species are recognized and their diagnostic characters are given. A new species, Dodecaceria berkeleyi, is described from New Zealand where it is found boring in the shells of large gastropod molluscs. An outline is given of the nature of the skin pigments, which are similar to the arenicolochrome of lugworms. Asexual reproduction in the genus is reviewed, and an account is given of autotomy in D. berkeleyi, followed by regeneration to give rise to two individuals, a method of reproduction similar to that which occurs in the colonial tube builder Dodecaceria fistulicola. An advanced larval stage found in the burrows of D. berkeleyi is described.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Obesity is overtaking tobacco smoking in New Zealand as the leading potentially modifiable risk to health. International obesity guidelines recommend that health professionals opportunistically encourage weight management with their patients. However, research shows consistently low rates of weight management discussion, suggesting that health professionals may not be realising their full potential to address obesity. AIM To identify communication strategies used by General Practitioners (GPs) to open the topic of weight and weight management in routine consultations. METHODS A secondary analysis was conducted of 36 video-recorded consultations in general practices, selected for relevance from a database of 205 consultations. Content and interactional analysis was conducted in the context of the entire consultation. RESULTS The topic of weight was initiated more often by GPs than patients and was raised mostly once or twice in a consultation and occasionally as many as six times. GPs employed opportunistic strategies twice as often as they used structured strategies. DISCUSSION This study of naturally occurring consultations confirmed GPs do engage in opportunistic discussions about weight. However, such discussions are challenging and interactionally delicate. Highlighting the clinical relevance of weight appears to be effective. The high frequency of patient contact with GPs provides opportunity to reach and work with people at risk of chronic conditions associated with excess weight. Further research is required to identify suitable training and brief intervention tools for use in routine consultations that may be beneficial for both GPs and patients.

Abstract Background: Land use and land cover change significantly affects biodiversity, abundance and distribution of intermediate snail host fauna. In Omo-Gibe river basin the extent of land-use change is high due to anthropogenic activities leading to habitat change of freshwater snail intermediate hosts. Most intermediate snail hosts of human Schistosome parasites belong to two genera, Biomphalaria and Bulinus. In Addition, Lymnea spp. is another important host of Fasciola which causes fasciolasis in domestic animals and human. This study aims to assess the effects of land-use on the distribution and abundance of freshwater snail intermediate hosts and cercariae infection rates of fresh water intermediate snail hosts in Omo-Gibe River basin, Ethiopia.Methods: This study was conducted in Omo-Gibe river basin in 130 sampling sites which include rivers, lakes, dams, stream, wetlands and irrigation ditches. At each site data on land use, anthropogenic activities, freshwater snail abundance and species diversity, and water samples were collected. Snails were collected from each sampling sites using a scoop (20cm x 30cm) with a mesh size of 300µm. Snails were sorted by genus on Enamel pan using forceps and preserved in labeled vials containing 75% ethanol. Live snails collected from the same habitat were sorted carefully and put in clean plastic buckets half filled with water. Afterwards, snails were provided with fresh lettuce leaves and maintained in the laboratory. Snails were then identified morphologically to family, genus and to species level. Each snail was examined for cercaria shedding by placing in a petri dish containing water and exposed to the sun for 2 hours. Cercariae were morphologically identified by microscopy. ArcGIS software of version 10.3.1 was used to map snail distribution and data were analysed using SPSS version-20.Results: The results obtained in this study shows clearly that land use change affect the distribution and abundance of fresh water snails in Omo-Gibe river basin. Fresh water snails were more abundant in farmland and settlement areas. Of the total 2,559 freshwater snails collected from 130 surveyed sites in Omo-Gibe river basin, 1749 (68.34%) belongs to medically important snail species. Biomphalaria spp.914 (35.7%),, Lymnea spp.439 (17.1%),, Physa spp. 343(13.4%) and Bulinus spp 53 (2%)). Sphaeriidae group accounted for 810 (31.6%) of the collected specimens. Biomphalaria pfeifferi was the predominant species of the total snail sampled from lakes, wetlands, rivers and irrigation ditches. Biomphalaria pfeifferi was the most infected snail species by different cercariae. Bulinus globosus and L.natalensis were infected by more than one and same type of cercariae. However, none of B. sudanica and P. acuta specimens was infected by trematode.Conclusions: The results of this study revealed that land use change altered the abundance, distribution and diversity of medically important fresh water snails in the study area. In general medically important freshwater snails which include: Biomphalaria spp, Bulinus spp and Lymnaea spp were collected from lakes, rivers, wetlands, irrigation ditches.. The medically important snail species found infected by cercaria are L. natalensis, B. pfeifferi and B. globosus. Biomphalaria pfefferi was the predominant species and highly infected by cercariae. Higher infection rate was observed in snails collected in Farmland (16.59%) and Grassland (36.6%).
