An overview is given of the soft X-ray photon-in/photon-out instruments on the free-electron laser (FEL) beamline at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, and selected commissioning results are presented. The FEL beamline provides a photon energy of 270 to 1200 eV, with an energy bandwidth of 0.44%, an energy of 200 µJ per pulse and a pulse width of <50 fs (full width at half-maximum). The estimated total time resolution between optical laser and X-ray pulses is <100 fs. Instruments for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) have been set up. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra for a Co/Pt multilayer film and RIXS spectra for α-Fe2O3(100) have been obtained and the performance of the spectrometer has been evaluated.

ABSTRACTMagnetic circular dichroism in the Fe 2p x-ray absorption is observed in multilayers of (Fe9.5Å/Pt9.5Å)92. The Magnetization and helicity are both in the plane of this multilayer which is prepared by magnetron sputter deposition. This sample is part of a study to examine magnetization in the ternary multilayer system of FeCo/Pt. Lattice and layer pair spacings are measured using x-ray scattering. The atomic concentration profiles of the multilayer films are characterized using Auger electron spectroscopy coupled with depth profiling. Conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy are used to examine the thin film, growth morphology and atomic structure.

AbstractQuenching of vibrational excitations in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of liquid acetic acid is observed. At the oxygen core resonance associated with localized excitations at the O–H bond, the spectra lack the typical progression of vibrational excitations observed in RIXS spectra of comparable systems. We interpret this phenomenon as due to strong rehybridization of the unoccupied molecular orbitals as a result of hydrogen bonding, which however cannot be observed in x-ray absorption but only by means of RIXS. This allows us to address the molecular structure of the liquid, and to determine a lower limit for the average molecular chain length.
