Purpose The purpose of the paper is to design a new attitude stabilization system for a microsatellite based on single gimbal control moment gyro (SGCMG) in which the gimbal rates are selected as controller parameters. Design/methodology/approach In the stability mode, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control strategies are presented with the gimbal rates as a controller parameters. Instead of developing a control torque to solve the attitude problem, the attitude controller is developed in terms of the control moment gyroscope gimbal angular velocities. Attitude control torques are generated by means of a four SGCMG pyramid cluster. Findings Numerical simulation results are provided to show the efficiency of the proposed controllers. Simulation results show that this method could stabilize satellite from initial condition with large angles and with more accuracy in comparison with feedback quaternion and proportional-integral-derivative controllers. These results show the effect of filtering the noisy signal in the LQG controller. LQG in comparison to LQR is more realistic. Practical implications The LQR method is more appropriate for the systems that have project models reasonably exact and ideal sensors/actuators. LQG is more realistic, and it can be used when not all of the states are available or when the system presents noises. LQR/LQG controller can be used in the stabilization mode of satellite attitude control. Originality/value The originality of this paper is designing a new attitude stabilization system for an agile microsatellite using LQR and LQG controllers.

This article presents a virtual environment based on co-simulation between MatLab and MSC Adams, allowing simulation, analysis, development and validation of control strategies for tracking of position trajectories of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The simulation results in the horizontal plane show that it is possible, in an uncomplicated way, to construct a virtual environment, which allows observing realistic movements when the forces exerted on an ROV are provided. Taking advantage of the properties of co-simulation, the experiences in this work show that this simulation strategy is very suitable for analysis purposes and control design, allowing researchers and professionals the wide use of control tools available in MATLAB for this end. In this work, a robust linear quadratic regulator (LQR) with integral action has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed virtual environment for tracking of position trajectories. To validation purposes, widely used trajectories in naval study designs were employed such as the Zig -Zag shaped and the Circular shaped trajectories. Simulation results show that the integration of both, MatLab and MSC Adams, effectively addressees the problem of evaluation of performance of control strategies in the virtual environment. The presented approach allows gaining experience about the challenges of this kind of control problems, before dealing with the complex aspects of tuning in real experimental environments, avoiding losses and cost overruns for underwater robotics projects.

A description is given of an application of a linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) for stabilizing the characteristics of an anti-aircraft missile, and an analytical method of selecting the weighting elements of the gain matrix in feedback loop is proposed. A novel method of LQR tuning via a single parameter ς was proposed and tested. The article supplements and develops the topics addressed in the author’s previous work. Its added value includes the observation that the solutions obtained are symmetric pairs, and that the tuning parameter ς proposed for the designed linear-quadratic regulator enables the selection of suitable parameters for the airframe stabilizing loop for the majority of the analytical solutions of the considered Riccati equation.

The design of the spacecraft Attitude Control System (ACS) becomes more complex when the spacecraft has different type of components like, flexible solar panels, antennas, mechanical manipulators and tanks with fuel. The interaction between the fuel slosh motion, the panel’s flexible motion and the satellite rigid motion during translational and/or rotational manoeuvre can change the spacecraft center of mass position damaging the ACS pointing accuracy. This type of problem can be considered as a Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) where some movable or deformable structure interacts with an internal fluid. This paper develops a mathematical model for a rigid-flexible satellite with tank with fuel. The slosh dynamics is modelled using a common pendulum model and it is considered to be unactuated. The control inputs are defined by a transverse body fixed force and a moment about the centre of mass. A comparative investigation designing the satellite ACS by the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) methods is done. One has obtained a significant improvement in the satellite ACS performance and robustness of what has been done previously, since it controls the rigid-flexible satellite and the fuel slosh motion, simultaneously.

Purpose The share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the power system is increasing day by day. The RESs are intermittent, therefore maintaining the grid stability and power balance is very difficult. The purpose of this paper is to control the inverters in microgrid using different control strategies to maintain the system stability and power balance. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, different control strategies are implemented to the voltage source converter (VSC) to get the desired performance. The DQ control is a basic control strategy that is inherently present in the droop and virtual synchronous machine (VSM) control strategies. The droop and VSM control strategies are inspired by the conventional synchronous machine (SM). The main objective of this work is to design and implement the three aforementioned control strategies in microgrid. Findings The significant contributions of this work are: the detailed implementation of DQ control, droop control and VSM control strategies for VSC in both grid-connected mode and standalone mode is presented; the MATLAB/Simulink simulation results and comparative studies of the three aforementioned controllers are introduced first time in the proposed work; and the opal-RT digital real-time simulation results of the proposed VSM control show the superiority in transient response compared to the droop control strategy. Research limitations/implications In the power system, the power electronic-based power allowed by VSM is dominated by the conventional power which is generated from the traditional SM, and then the issues related to stability still need advance study. There are some differences between the SM and VSM characteristics, so the integration of VSM with the existing system still needs further study. Economical operation of VSM with hybrid storage is also one of the future scopes of this work. Originality/value The significant contributions of this work are: the detailed implementation of DQ control, droop control and VSM control strategies for VSC in both grid-connected mode and standalone mode is presented; the MATLAB/Simulink simulation results and comparative studies of the three aforementioned controllers are introduced first time in the proposed work; and the opal-RT digital real-time simulation results of the proposed VSM control show the superiority in transient response compared to the droop control strategy.

This paper presents a comparison between a proportional-integral controller, low pass filters, and the linear quadratic regulator in dealing with the task of eliminating harmonic currents in the grid-connected photovoltaic system. A brief review of the existing methods applied to mitigate harmonic currents is presented. The Perturb & Observe technique was employed for maximum power point tracking. The PI control, low pass filters, and the linear quadratic regulator are discussed in detail in terms of their control strategies. The grid current was analyzed in the system with all three of the controllers applied to control the voltage source inverter of the solar photovoltaic system connected to the grid through an L filter and LCL filter and simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results obtained have proven the robustness of the linear quadratic regulator over other methods. The technique lowers the grid current total harmonic distortion from 7.85% to 2.13%.

This paper presents a study on the estimator based on Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control scheme for Innovative Satellite (InnoSAT). By using LQR control scheme, the controller and the estimator has been derived for state space form in all three axes to stabilize the system’s performance. This study starts by converting the transfer functions of attitude control into state space form.  Then, the step continues by finding the best value of weighting matrices of LQR in order to obtain the best value of controller gain, K. After that, the best value of L is obtained for the estimator gain. The value of K and L is combined in forming full order compensator and in the same time the reduced order compensator is also formed. Lastly, the performance of full order compensator is compared to reduced order compensator. From the simulation, results indicate that both types of estimators have presented good stability and tracking performance. However, reduced order estimator has simpler equation and faster convergence to zero than the full order estimator. This property is very important in developing a satellite attitude control for real-time implementation.

With the purpose of overcoming the defect that unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are easily disturbed by air current and tend to be unstable, an augmented-stability controller was developed for a certain UAV’s longitudinal motion. According to requirements of short-period damping ratio and control anticipation parameter (CAP) in flight quality specifications of GJB185-86 and C*, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory was used in the augmented-stability controller’s design. The simulation results show that the augmented-stability controller not only improves the UAV’s stability and dynamic characteristics but also enhances the UAV’s robustness.
