The hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) with three grain sizes of monoclinic (M) and triclinic (T) modifications and on their thermally activated samples were investigated by exposure to water vapour at 80°C for 60 days. The products were investigated by XRD, TG and N2 adsorption. The smaller the particle size the greater was the hydration for both dried and activated samples from (M). In the activated samples a hydrate with 2θ values of 38.4°, 44.6° and 48.6° could be identified. Hydration increased with particle size for the unactivated (T) samples but after activation the intermediate size exhibited enhanced hydration. Thermal treatment at 950°C of (T) samples increased the surface active centers on the expense of those in the bulk. Changes produced in surface texture upon activation and/or hydration are discussed.

AbstractIt is said that small and intermediate size towns play a significant role in the socio-economic transformation of regional spaces through diffusion of innovations. It, however, has been hypothesized here that in this diffusion process the villages having better infrastructural facilities and services, play central role. For its analysis, the study takes the case of a region consisting of three administrative districts - Raebareli, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh, of the Uttar Pradesh state of India. These districts have remained in political focus since India’s independence and have elected two prime-ministers and some most influential politicians of their times in quest of development. However, the condition of development here is still deplorable. These districts have 22 statutory towns, and are least urbanized in the state. The towns are mainly administrative or market centres in nature serving surrounding villages by their backward and forward linkages. The study analyses ‘Z scores’ of select services to measure the level of development at block and village level, and portrays the spatial arrangement of towns in development setting of the region. The study observes that while towns are instrumental in promoting regional development, the role of ‘rurban’ centres (high service villages) in the process of diffusion of development is pivotal.

ABSTRACT Nudaurelia capensis ω virus-like particles have been characterized as a 480-Å procapsid and a 410-Å capsid, both with T=4 quasisymmetry. Procapsids transition to capsids when pH is lowered from 7.6 to 5.0. Capsids undergo autoproteolysis at residue 570, generating the 74-residue C-terminal polypeptide that remains with the particle. Here we show that the particle size becomes smaller under conditions between pH 6.8 and 6.0 without activating cleavage and that the particle remains at an intermediate size when the pH is carefully maintained. At pH 5.8, cleavage is very slow, becoming detectable only after 9 h. The optimum pH for cleavage is 5.0 (half-life, ∼30 min), with a significant reduction in the cleavage rate at pH values below 5. We also show that lowering the pH is required only to make the virus particles compact and to presumably form the active site for autoproteolysis but not for the chemistry of cleavage. The cleavage reaction proceeds at pH 7.0 after ∼10% of the subunits cleave at pH 5.0. Employing the virion crystal structure for reference, we investigated the role of electrostatic repulsion of acidic residues in the pH-dependent large conformational changes. Three mutations of Glu to Gln that formed procapsids showed three different phenotypes on maturation. One, close to the threefold and quasithreefold symmetry axes and far from the cleavage site, did not mature at pH 5, and electron cryomicroscopy reconstruction showed that it was intermediate in size between those of the procapsid and capsid; one near the cleavage site exhibited a wild-type phenotype; and a third, far from the cleavage site, resulted in cleavage of 50% of the subunits after 4 h, suggesting quasiequivalent specificity of the mutation.

ABSTRACT The role of conserved amino acid residues in the polymerase domain of Escherichia coli primase has been studied by mutagenesis. We demonstrate that each of the conserved amino acids Arg146, Arg221, Tyr230, Gly266, and Asp311 is involved in the process of catalysis. Residues Glu265 and Asp309 are also critical because a substitution of each amino acid irreversibly destroys the catalytic activity. Two K229A and M268A mutant primase proteins synthesize only 2-nucleotide products in de novo synthesis reactions under standard conditions. Y267A mutant primase protein synthesizes both full-size and 2-nucleotide RNA, but with no intermediate-size products. From these data we discuss the significant step of the 2-nucleotide primer RNA synthesis by E. coli primase and the role of amino acids Lys229, Tyr267, and Met268 in primase complex stability.

The component of Group A streptococci which is responsible for the chronic, remittent, multinodular lesion of connective tissue is derived from the cell wall. Further evidence is given to support the essential role of the group-specific C polysaccharide in the production of this lesion. A series of particles containing the group-specific C polysaccharide was prepared, ranging in size from large cell wall fragments to the relatively small hapten. A comparison of the lesion producing capacity of the particles in this spectrum revealed that maximum toxic activity is associated with C polysaccharide complexes of intermediate size. The discussion considers colloidal properties associated with C polysaccharide complexes of a certain size, and the influence particle size has on persistence in tissue, as possible explanations of the relationship between the size of the C polysaccharide complex and its ability to produce the chronic lesion of connective tissue.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

Yet a place remains for cognitive processes to second-guess intuitive responses – that is, to be reflective – and individual differences abound in automatic, intuitive processing as well.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
