Purpose The blockchain technology provides a way to record transactions that is designed to be highly secure, transparent, trustable, traceable, auditable and tamper-proof. And, the internet of things (IoT) technology provides the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction, which is able to link computing devices and digitized machines, things, objects, animals and people that are provided with digital unique identifiers (UIDs). This paper aims to explore the combined application of blockchain and IoT-based technologies, especially on the intellectual property protection area. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors propose a high-level architecture design of blockchain and IoT-based intellectual property protection system, which can help to process three types of intellectual property: (1) patents, copyrights, trademarks etc.; (2) industrial design, trade dress, craft works, trade secrets etc.; and (3) plant variety rights, geographical indications, etc. Findings Using blockchain peer-to-peer network and IoT devices, the proposed method can help people to establish a trusted, self-organized, open and ecological intellectual property protection system. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that applied blockchain and IoT technologies on traditional intellectual property protection and trade ecosystem.

With help from both domestic and international markets, ASEAN countries are able to catch-up withthe latest economic development if they can sustain high economic growth for a long-period of time. To doso, the resources available in countries such as capital and labors should fully be utilized up to theoptimum level. The capital itself can be in many forms such as investment. Since most of the ASEANcountries are categorized as developing countries, the reliance on foreign direct investment (FDI) as asource of growth is highly needed as it helps the economy to step on a higher stage of economic developmentvia the roles of foreign experts and technological transfer. In ensuring a higher level of investment, there isa need to ensure a high level of intellectual property protection since it assists in promoting invention,innovation and new business development. In opposite, lacking in protection might discourage foreigninvestors to invest in the countries, thus limiting the ability of the countries to grow further. Therefore, theaim of this paper is to examine whether strong intellectual property protection will really help in attractingmore foreign investors to invest in ASEAN-5 countries. Using annual data from 2007 to 2016, panel dataestimation using random effect is employed. It was found that the ASEAN-5 countries should strengthentheir intellectual property protection in order to stimulate higher foreign investments. Nevertheless, inbetween copyright and patents, copyrights protection gives significant effect to the FDI inflows relative tothe latter one. It indicates that the countries are slowly moving out from the production-based economy andcatching-up towards a digital economy. Purpose This paper aims to describe a method for Internet-of-Things-devices to achieve industrial grade reliability for information transfer from wireless sensor systems to production systems using blockchain technologies. Design/methodology/approach An increased security and reliability of submitted data within the sensor network could be achieved on an application level. Therefore, a lightweight, high-level communication protocol based on blockchain principles was designed. Findings Blockchain mechanisms can secure the wireless communication of Internet-of-Things-devices in a lightweight and scalable manner. Originality/value The innovation of this research is the successful application of general blockchain mechanisms to increase security of a wireless sensor system without binding to a dedicated blockchain technology.


Significance This follows high-level China-US trade talks restarting after a November 1 Trump-Xi telephone conversation, November 6’s US midterm elections that delivered a Democrat-majority House of Representatives from January 2019 and US-China trade-related frictions at the APEC Summit (November 15-17) preventing a joint communique’s immediate release. These frictions have sparked fears of a US-China ‘trade war’, or worse, and what scenarios and drivers might see this avoided. Impacts China may eye further trade renegotiations with the next US president, from 2021 or 2025. Democrats would want any trade deal to include human rights and environmental protections; Beijing would certainly resist the former. China might offer intellectual property concessions on paper, since there are multiple ways to circumvent such restrictions. Trump could sell a ‘partial’ deal politically, but he may calculate that ‘China-the-adversary’ rhetoric will win more 2020 votes.

Blockchain technology was born with the bitcoin cryptocurrency and has been seen as a revolutionary technology since it became possible to design smart contracts and tokens based on it. It has been possible to export this innovation to the most diverse fields, including the culture and entertainment industry and media. However, and after six years of developing different models to incorporate blockchain into journalism, an integrated model to act as a reference in this field is still lacking. After analyzing and grouping the wide potential of blockchain in journalism into so-called regimes, this work points out both promising and failed projects in each of the three regimes proposed: registration, economic, and organizational. It is concluded that, despite the very interesting developments regarding the registration regime and intellectual property protection, on the one hand, and economic regime and tokenization, on the other, the inherent decentralized configuration of blockchain currently represents a large obstacle to the construction of an integrated model for its use in journalism. Resumen Desde que la tecnología nacida para la generación de la criptomoneda bitcoin, blockchain, incorporó la posibilidad de diseñar contratos inteligentes y tokens sobre la misma, se vio como una tecnología revolucionaria. De hecho, está, junto a la robótica y la inteligencia artificial, en el centro de la denominada cuarta revolución industrial. Una innovación capaz de ser llevada a los más diversos campos, entre los que destacaba la industria de la cultura y el entretenimiento en general y los medios de comunicación en particular. Es más, teniendo en cuenta la profunda crisis económica y de confianza que vive el ejercicio de la profesión periodística, se apuntaba como una prometedora alternativa a tener muy en cuenta. Sin embargo, tras seis años de probar con distintos modelos de incorporación de esta al ejercicio del periodismo, aún falta la referencia de un modelo capaz de integrar las capacidades derivadas de la misma en este campo. Parece que aún se está lejos de lo que podría considerarse un modelo blockchain en periodismo, de la misma manera que se está alcanzando en otras industrias o profesiones. En este artículo, tras analizar y agrupar esas potencialidades innovadoras en lo que se han denominado regímenes, se apuntan proyectos prometedores y proyectos fallidos en cada uno de ellos. Se concluye que, si bien se han dado desarrollos muy interesantes en lo que respecta a los regímenes de registro y protección de la propiedad intelectual, por un lado, y económico, a través de la tokenización, por otro lado, el gran obstáculo actualmente está en concretar la fórmula de la organización descentralizada. Un modelo de organización que se encuentra en el corazón de blockchain.

Purpose With the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) market and requirement, low power wide area (LPWA) technologies have become popular. In various LPWA technologies, Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) and long range (LoRa) are two main leading competitive technologies. Compared with NB-IoT networks, which are mainly built and managed by mobile network operators, LoRa wide area networks (LoRaWAN) are mainly operated by private companies or organizations, which suggests two issues: trust of the private network operators and lack of network coverage. This study aims to propose a conceptual architecture design of a blockchain built-in solution for LoRaWAN network servers to solve these two issues for LoRaWAN IoT solution. Design/methodology/approach The study proposed modeling, model analysis and architecture design. Findings The proposed solution uses the blockchain technology to build an open, trusted, decentralized and tamper-proof system, which provides the indisputable mechanism to verify that the data of a transaction has existed at a specific time in the network. Originality/value To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that integrates blockchain technology and LoRaWAN IoT technology.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection on its ability to enhance domestic export quality. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides a testable framework to explain the impact of IPR protection on export quality. Research and development (R&D) spending and foreign direct investment (FDI) are positively correlated with a country’s export quality. Furthermore, intellectual property protection can induce more FDI and R&D spending. Therefore, the authors expect that there may be an indirect relationship between intellectual property protection and export quality (Figure 1). Findings The empirical results suggest that the influence paths of IPR protection on export quality are different between developed and developing countries. FDI plays a mediating role in the relationship between IPR protection and export quality in developing countries, while this mediating effect in developed countries is dependent on R&D and FDI. In addition, this impact is statistically significant in high-technology industries. Especially, IPR protection plays an extraordinary important role in enhancing the export quality of differentiated high-technology products. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature in several ways. First, this is the first empirical analysis focusing on the influence path of IPR protection on export quality. The authors find that the hypothesis is supported by the positive and significant interaction coefficients of IPR protection with FDI and R&D. Second, the authors explore that the influence path of IPR protection on export quality may vary with the level of economic development. Third, this paper examines the effect of IPR protection on export quality in different industries.
