Integration of expectation confirmation theory and self-determination theory in internet banking continuance intention

Purpose The expansion of information technology (IT) has become a great challenge in the business world today. Benefits from IT investment are only realized through sustained usage, rather than initial acceptance. Therefore, designing strategies continuously attracting user retention is the most critical and general question in IT global market. This paper aims to develop an integrated model that combines two well-known theories expectation confirmation theory (ECT) and self-determination theory (SDT) to determine customer’s continuance intention toward use internet banking. Design/methodology/approach A total number of 398 customers of commercial banks participated in this research. The research model was empirically tested using structural equation modeling. Findings The findings reveal that both ECT and SDT have significant influence in a customer’s continuance usage intention. The integrated model has good explanatory power (76.3%) to predict customer’s continuance intention toward use of internet banking. Additionally, importance performance matrix analysis indicates that intrinsic regulation and customer’s satisfaction are the most important factors to determine internet banking user’s continuance intention. Practical implication Internet banking users will be intrinsically motivated only for those activities that generate intrinsic interest for them, activities that have the charm of novelty, challenge or aesthetic significance. Thus, understanding banking customer intrinsic values should be a priority for managers and policymakers. Theoretically, integration of two well-known theories, ECT and SDT, provide basis for further refinement of technology continuance model in emerging e-payment domain. Originality/value This study is different from several traditional studies that had investigated initial acceptance of internet banking. In contrast, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of customer’s behavior in continuance intention context with technology (ECT) and motivational factors (SDT).

PurposeIn this era of digital technology, the banking sector has revolutionized its operations by using web-based Internet banking services. However, the success of these financial services is dependent on Internet banking user continuance intention instead of initial adoption. The current study develops a theoretical framework based on three well-known theories, namely the expectation–confirmation theory, self-determination theory (SDT) and the commitment trust theory, to investigate Internet banking user continuance intention towards use of Internet banking services.Design/methodology/approachFollowing positivist paradigm, a research survey was conducted towards Internet banking users of commercial banks. In response, 355 valid observations were retrieved and used for data analysis. For data analysis, this study has used a latest statistical approach, namely structural equation modelling (SEM).FindingsThis study has confirmed that factors underpinning the commitment trust theory, SDT and expectation–confirmation model have significant impact on Internet banking user continuance intention. The research model explained 68.4% of variance in determining Internet banking user continuance intention, which is substantial. The effect size analysis (f2) indicates that perceived usefulness is the most important factor among all other exogenous variables. The predictive relevance of the research model was found substantial Q2 50.3%. These findings confirmed that the research model has substantial power to predict Internet banking user continuance intention.Practical implicationsFrom a managerial perspective, findings of this research give deeper insight into financial advisors, bank managers and policy- makers to understand human motivation and expectation–confirmation factors in order to retain customers and gain return on Information Technology (IT) investment. Additionally, results suggest that attention should be given on user trust, which in turn boosts user intention towards continuance use of Internet banking services. Extension of the self-determination framework contributes to theory and augments e-commerce literature, especially in a post-adoption setting.Originality/valueThere are several studies that investigate Internet banking user pre-adoption behaviour. Therefore, less is discussed about the Internet banking user’s post-adoption behaviour. Findings of this study help financial advisors to comprehensively understand which factor influences Internet banking user behaviour towards continue use of Internet banking services.

Purpose The proliferation of information technology has changed the banking system globally. Internet technology has not only allowed banks to offer products and services but also improved their ability to retain customers. This study aims to examine internet banking user’s continuance intention by integrating two well-known theories DeLone and McLean information system success model (D&M) and self-determination theory (SDT). Design/methodology/approach The research model was tested using survey data from 398 customers of commercial banks. The respondents were internet banking users. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings The results revealed that internet banking user continuance intention is jointly determined by information quality (INFQ), service quality, satisfaction, introjected regulation, external regulation, intrinsic regulation and identified regulation. The integrated model explained 75.4 per cent variation in customer’s continuance intention to use internet banking. The results suggested that intrinsic regulation and identified regulation were the most important human motivation factors that drive customer’s intention toward continue use of internet banking. Practical implications The findings imply that managers seeking user satisfaction should focus on INFQ and service quality to enhance user continuance intention. Policymakers should focus on intrinsic and identified regulation of internet banking users. Some of the ways banks can do this is to develop enjoyable internet banking website with kind of reward system, activities that have the charm of novelty, challenge or aesthetic significance will help to improve user’s intention to continue use of internet banking. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by integrating D&M and SDT in continuance intention and different from several traditional studies that had investigated the initial acceptance of internet banking users.

Purpose The long-term success of internet banking (IB) services is connected with continuous use. Therefore, examining factors which influence IB user continuance intention is important. Grounded in technology continuance theory, bank transparency and task technology fit (TTF) model, the purpose of this study is to develop a unified technology continuance model to investigate IB user continuance intention. Design/methodology/approach The research model was empirically tested with 348 responses. Respondents included in this study had prior experience with IB services. For hypotheses testing, the structural equation modelling approach was used. Findings Findings indicate that the research model has substantial power in explaining IB user continuance intention. Importance performance matrix analysis revealed that bank transparency had the highest importance in determining IB user continuance intention. Therefore, factors like user satisfaction and perceived usefulness have shown a medium level of importance in determining IB user continuance intention. Satisfaction is influenced by perceived usefulness and confirmation and established a significant impact on IB user continuance intention. Practical implications The findings of this research are useful for bank managers and policymakers to develop and design IB services according to user’s expectations. Results demonstrate that expectation confirmation and perceived usefulness are antecedents of IB user satisfaction and IB user continuance intention. In addition to that bank, transparency has shown a significant effect on user expectation and IB user continuance intention. These findings established that accuracy in sharing bank information and clarity in transaction charges encourage the user to continue the use of IB services. Originality/value The current study develops a unified technology continuance model based on the TTF model and technology continuance theory and investigates IB user continuance intention. Moreover, bank transparency is added in the technology continuance model and established a significant impact towards user expectation confirmation and continuance intention. These findings contribute to the limited body of research in the context of IB user continuance intention and enrich information system literature.

PurposeThis paper aims to demonstrate the turnover intentions (TIs) among the academic faculty of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan through their motivation and commitment toward the concerned institution. It inspects the relationship of dimensions of motivation including an absence of motivation (AM), extrinsic motivation (ExM) and intrinsic motivation (InM) with the dimensions of commitment including affective commitment (AC), continuous commitment (CC) and normative commitment (NC) and finally the academic's TIs.Design/methodology/approachThe paper used the self-determination theory (SDT), the theory of organizational commitment (OC) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) for its proposed model. A sample of 500 academics, working under higher education commission recognized public and private universities in Punjab Pakistan. A structural equation modeling (SEM) conducted for analysis using an algorithm, bootstrapping and blindfolding techniques.FindingsThe outcomes of the research are attention-grabbing, as no direct relationship has been observed between the dimensions of motivation and TIs except InM. The dimensions of commitments are mediating the relationship between motivation and TIs with high significance value. The results reveal a significant adverse effect on TIs through two dimensions of commitment.Research limitations/implicationsAs it is the case of a developing country like Pakistan therefore the finding cannot generalize to developed countries.Practical implicationsThe findings of this research may lead the policymakers and practitioners of HEIs and controlling body to retain their competent teachers.Social implicationsThis research can help the private sector to develop strategies about the retention of their competent teachers within the institutions that not just value the institution but also will be much beneficial for the students and society.Originality/valueThis paper is identifying how motivation is related to TIs and the role of commitment in it at HEIs. Still, no research has been conducted considering this avenue of SDT, OC and TPB

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to propose an integrated model based on expectation–confirmation model (ECM), flow theory and human–organization–technology fit framework to examine whether human, organizational and technology factors as antecedents to medical professionals' beliefs can affect their continuance intention of the cloud-based e-learning system.Design/methodology/approachSample data for this study were collected from medical professionals at five hospitals in Taiwan. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed, and 368 (73.6%) useable questionnaires were analyzed using structural equation modeling in this study.FindingsSynthetically speaking, human, organizational and technology factors, as antecedents to medical professionals' continuance intention of the cloud-based e-learning system have been examined, and the results strongly support the research model with all hypothesized links being significant.Originality/valueParticularly, it is worth mentioning that the application of capturing both ECM and flow theory for completely explaining three types of factors (i.e. human, organizational and technology factors) as external variables to medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention is well documented, that is, information systems (IS) and nonIS determinants are simultaneously evaluated, and extrinsic and intrinsic motivators are both taken into consideration in this study's theoretical development of medical professionals' cloud-based e-learning continuance intention to acquire a more comprehensive and robust analysis.

Purpose The increasing innovation and urgent need of up-to-date and convenient information systems have gained high importance in financial sector. Several banks have deployed internet banking in order to reduce cost while improving customer services. Therefore, the growth of internet banking is limited and in many cases fallen short of expectations. The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated model that combines technology, innovative and environmental factors altogether in order to understand customer’s intention to adopt, and intention to recommend internet banking in social networks. Design/methodology/approach In all, 398 valid responses were collected from customers of commercial banks, using convenience sampling approach. Data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling. Findings The findings show that integrated model has good explanatory power (78.3 percent) to predict customer’s intention to adopt internet banking. Findings also revealed that the interaction effect of gamification between user’s intention to adopt and user’s intention to recommend internet banking will be stronger when gamification effect is higher. Importance performance matrix analysis (IPMA) revealed that innovativeness and perceived technology security were the most important factors in order to determine user’s intention with regard to adoption of internet banking. Practical implications For policy-makers, it is suggested that they should focus on innovative characteristics and must ensure the possible environment for carrying out internet banking transaction. Advertising about new technology with adequate information may produce positive influence on user’s intention. Enjoyable internet banking website with reward system will help to improve user’s intention to adopt and intention to recommend internet banking with others, thus developers should introduce game features on internet banking website. Originality/value This study provides basis for further refinement of individual technology acceptance models and enrich the e-commerce literature adding innovative and game elements in interne banking adoption context. Additionally, the proposed model makes an important contribution in emerging e-commerce literature especially in the context of innovative and gamified internet banking.

PurposeThe research focuses on the impact of client vendor communication on client satisfaction in information system projects and after client satisfaction that will bridge them toward the information system continuance intention of clients. Importance of this study is to understand the effect of client-vendor communication on client satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachThe sample size of the study was 200 respondents and data was collected from electrical manufacturing industries. It is a quantitative field study, and the time horizon of this study is cross-sectional. The data collected was then analyzed by doing the structural equation modeling in PLS-SEM in order to examine the relationships.FindingsFindings of this study likewise demonstrate the mediating impact of client satisfaction between the relationship of client-vendor communication and information system continuance intention as well as between the relationship of expectation confirmation and information system continuance intention. Future studies may include the multi-motive information system continuance model (MISC) to explain the constructs in more depth because it includes different dimensions of expectation confirmation which will help more to understand information system continuance intention.Originality/valueThis study determines the role of information system continuance intention in terms of client-vendor communication and expectation confirmation through the impact of mediator client satisfaction. Previous studies have explained that client-vendor communication affects client satisfaction positively and confirmation also positively affects the client satisfaction. For this research study, the authors have identified the following research gaps. The authors also have found out that the following study is significant in a related study taken in the developed countries. On the contrary, the authors will follow the study and further observe the impact of improved risks in different cities of Pakistan that how client-vendor communication are affecting the success of information

PurposeThis study aimed to explore consumers' continuance intention to use a fitness and health app by applying two theoretical models: the expectation–confirmation model (ECM) and the investment model (IM).Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was administered to consumers who are currently using fitness and health apps (N = 342). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted using Amos 22.0 software to examine the hypothesized relationships in the research model.FindingsResults revealed that users' continuance intention was significantly predicted by the two models. Within the ECM, the positive and significant relationships among variables were found. Moreover, users' satisfaction and investment size had positive impacts on their commitment, which, in turn, positively affected the intention. Also, confirmation of expectations had a positive impact on investment size.Originality/valueThe integrated model helps better understand fitness and health app users' decision-making process from the perspective of relationship commitment and suggests practical implications for health and fitness app providers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose and test a theoretical framework to identify the specific aspects of the guest experience at a wellness facility that contribute to well-being. Self-determination theory (SDT) is used as the theoretical framework. According to SDT, basic needs must be met in order for psychological well-being to be achieved. Thus, in addition to the services and amenities offered, the quality of interactions with staff and service providers are integral to wellness vacation outcomes or basic need fulfillment. Design/methodology/approach Psychological precursors, or basic needs, were estimated using structural equation modeling, and these precursors were significant with the model explaining considerable variation in the outcome variable, well-being. Findings The results suggest that guest experiences can be enhanced if management facilitates guest autonomy, helps guests develop a sense of mastery with respect to activities and encourages positive interactions between guests. Research limitations/implications Study limitations include the single venue used for data collection, sample size and a focus on exercise activities as a proxy for staff–guest interactions. Practical implications This study sheds light on an under-researched area, providing managerial guidelines for wellness tourism destinations with respect to service delivery. Originality/value This study extends the wellness tourism literature by suggesting a framework to assess the service product and optimize guest experiences within the niche wellness sector of the tourism and hospitality industry.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the continuance intention of Alipay by proposing an integrated model. This paper highlights how the capacity of providing context-based information to the users plays significant role in determining the continuance intention of mobile payment like Alipay. Design/methodology/approach Data are collected from 336 Alipay users from Wuhan, P.R. China. To analyze the data, the authors apply structural equation modeling approach. Also, the authors perform importance-performance map analysis (IPMA) to identify the critical factors in explaining the continuance intention of Alipay. Findings The results of the study reveal that confirmation and perceived usefulness significantly influence the continuance intention of Alipay through satisfaction. Also, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, context and ubiquity have direct impact on the continuance intention of Alipay through attitude. According to IPMA, perceived ease of use, confirmation and context require special managerial consideration to improve their performance. Originality/value This research has proposed and validated an integrated model by incorporating context-awareness theory and technology continuance theory. This study provides significant insights that can assist respective decision-makers to formulate/adjust their strategies related to the retention of the existing users of mobile payment like Alipay.
