How does capital market respond to Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) announcements in India

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) information and a firm’s stock prices. Design/methodology/approach The present study is based on 193 CERs announcements by Indian firms over a 13-year period 2005–2017. The event study methodology is used to examine the impact of CERs announcements on a firm’s share prices. Findings The study suggests that the issuance of CERs did not produce any significant abnormal return. More specifically, the outcomes of event study shows that over a two-day event window from the event day to the day after the event (i.e. days 0 to 1), the mean and median of AARs are −0.25 and −0.34 percent, respectively. The abnormal returns on day 1 are not statistically significant as per the t-test. Moreover, the mean and median of abnormal returns after one day (−1) are negative, indicating that investors react negatively to CERs announcements. However, the mean and median of CAARs over both the two-day (i.e. days −1 to 0 and days 0 to +1) and three-day (i.e. days −1 to +1) event windows are positive, but not statistically significant based on the t-test. Research limitations/implications The findings of the study are quite comprehensive, relatively used only market-based criteria of a firm’s financial performance, e.g., share price, at times, inhibits generalizing the results. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, the present study is a first of its kind to investigate the relationship between the CERs information and a firm’s stock prices.

PurposeThis study aims to provide evidence of market reactions to organizations' inclusion of people with disabilities. Cases from financial journals in 1989–2014 were used to analyze the impact of actions taken by organizations to include or discriminate people with disabilities in terms of the companies' stock prices.Design/methodology/approachThis research is conducted as an event study where the disclosure of information on an organization's actions toward people with disabilities is expected to impact the organization's stock price. The window of the event was set as (−1, +1) days. Stock prices were analyzed to detect abnormal returns during this period.FindingsResults support the hypotheses that investors value inclusion and reject discrimination. Furthermore, the impact of negative actions is immediate, whereas the impact of positive actions requires at least an additional day to influence the firm's stock price. Some differences among the categories were found; for instance, employment and customer events were significantly more important to a firm's stock price than philanthropic actions. It was observed that philanthropic events produce negative abnormal returns on average.Originality/valueThe event study methodology provides a different perspective to practices in organizations regarding people with disabilities. Moreover, the findings in this research advance the literature by highlighting that organizations should consider policies and practices that include people with disabilities.

Purpose—The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between accounting information and share price. In order to achieve this, a model that includes specific accounting ratios (earning per share, book value per share, capital employed per share and operating cash flow per share) and shares a price is developed. Design/methodology/approach—The data were collected from the companies listed in KSE-30 index. The time frame spans from 2006 to 2013 and OLS regression models were used to examine the relationshipsFindings—The resulting evidence suggest that accounting information parameters have significant influence on share price and they have joint explanatory power in determining stock prices. This research finds the consistent results with pervious empirical researches.Originality/value—The present study adds to the existing literature by examining the impact of accounting information on share prices within the context of an emerging capital market such as Pakistan Stock Exchange using KSE-30 companies. This is believed to be the first study which considers the aforementioned issues in the Pakistan’s capital market environment.

Several prominent institutional investors concerned about climate change have announced their intention or have divested from fossil fuel shares, to limit their exposure to the industry. The act of fossil fuel divestment may directly depress share prices or stigmatize the industry’s reputation, resulting in lower share value. While there has been considerable research conducted on the performance of the fossil fuel industry, there is not yet any empirical evidence that divestment announcements influence share prices. Adopting an event study methodology, this study measures abnormal deviations in stock prices of the top 200 global oil, gas, and coal companies by proven reserves, on days of prominent divestment announcements. Events are analyzed independently and in aggregate. The results make several notable contributions. While many events experienced short-term negative abnormal returns around the event day, the effects of events were more pronounced over longer event windows following the New York Climate March, suggesting a shift in investor perception. The results also find that divestment announcements related to campaigns, pledges, and endorsements all have a significant effect over the short-term event window. Finally, the results control for the general underperformance of the industry over the estimation window, attesting that the price change is caused by divestment announcements. Several robustness tests using alternate expected returns models and statistical tests were conducted to ensure the accuracy of the result. Overall, this study finds that divestment announcements decrease the share price of the fossil fuel companies, and thus, we conclude that ‘divestors’ can influence the share price of their target companies. Theoretically, the result adds new knowledge regarding the efficacy of the efficient market hypothesis in relation to divestment.

PurposeAs a popular supply chain finance (SCF) strategy, reverse factoring has been widely adopted by buyer firms. However, the extant literature provides scant empirical evidence on the performance effect of reverse factoring. The purpose of this study is to seek to narrow this gap by empirically examining the relationship between reverse factoring and operating performance and the contingency conditions of this relationship.Design/methodology/approachBased on a sample of 167 announcements of reverse factoring implementation made by publicly listed Chinese manufacturing firms between 2014 and 2018, this paper employs a long-term event study approach to analyze the operating performance effect of reverse factoring as well as the moderating effects of production and innovation capabilities.FindingsThe event study results indicate that reverse factoring has a positive effect on buyer firms' operating performance in terms of cost efficiency and operating margin. In addition, both production and innovation capabilities positively moderate the relationship between reverse factoring and operating margin. However, neither of them moderates the relationship between reverse factoring and cost efficiency.Originality/valueThis is the first study that empirically examines the impact of reverse factoring on operating performance based on secondary data. Furthermore, it sheds light on the SCF literature by providing insights into the contingency effects of production and innovation capabilities, which also extends our understanding of the application of extended resource-based view in SCF research.

Purpose Before introducing new products, companies make announcements regarding the launch of the product which influences stock market yields of the announcing companies. Information content of the new product announcement has never been an exclusive focused stream of research. Therefore, an assessment of the impact of the content characteristics of the new product announcement on the shareholder value and the impact of source credibility (spokesperson) in making such announcements is a major gap in the existing literature. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach First, the standard event study methodology has been employed on the sample to measure the abnormal gains/losses accruing to the announcing firms. Second, moderated regression analysis (MRA) is employed to identify the characteristics of the new product announcement and to check the role of the spokesperson in creating shareholder value. Findings The results of the event study indicate that the abnormal returns are generated during the new product announcement. The results of MRA disclose the variables having a positive and a significant influence on the effective returns of the announcing companies. Likewise, the role of the spokesperson has come out brightly as a credible communicator. Originality/value The research provides a direction to the announcing companies regarding the content of the announcement leading to a positive perception among the investing community. Likewise, it also provides direction to the investor community about the characteristics of the announcement content they give weight age in forming a perception of strength in evaluating the new product announcement, to which they are largely unaware.

Resumo O rating de crédito expressa uma opinião, por intermédio de escalas, sobre a qualidade do crédito de empresas, utilizado-a como medida de avaliação de risco no mercado. Agências de classificação de risco de crédito, como a Moody’s, divulgam os ratings que atribuem às empresas. Primeiramente, essas agências emitem o new rating, que representa o primeiro rating da companhia, e, posteriormente, essa emissão pode apresentar variações, denominadas upgrades e downgrades, relativas a boas e más notícias, respectivamente. Além disso, os ratings podem ser colocados em uma Watchlist quando, em breve, pode haver uma mudança do rating para downgrade ou para upgrade. O objetivo com este estudo consistiu, diante do que foi tratado, em abordar o impacto do rating de crédito sobre os preços das ações de empresas listadas na bolsa de valores brasileira. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto, foi analisada uma amostra de 44 empresas comercializadas na BM&FBovespa e 65 ratings nacionais de longo prazo emitidos pela Moody’s entre 2000 e 2015. Utilizou-se a metodologia de estudo de eventos, com os retornos normais calculados pelo modelo de retornos ajustados ao risco e ao mercado, e o Teste-F e o Teste-T para verificar a significância dos resultados. As análises finais evidenciaram que os preços das ações não são afetados de forma significativa pelas divulgações dos new ratings, downgrades, upgrades, on watch – possible downgrades e on watch – possible upgrades em nenhuma janela do evento, indicando que os ratings, para a amostra analisada, não trazem novas informações ao mercado.Palavras-chave: Ações. Rating. Estudo de eventos. Retornos anormais. Abstract Credit ratings are used as a mean to investors get new information on the companies by reducing the information asymmetry in the market. Thus, the rating is an important mean of business information with investors, enabling share prices relating to companies react to it. Branches of credit rating as Moody's, disclose the ratings they assign to companies. First, the agency issues the new rating, which represents the company's first rating, then this issue may vary, upgrades and downgrades calls relating to good and bad news respectively. In addition, the ratings could be placed in a Watchlist when, soon there may be a change to the rating downgrade or upgrade. The purpose of this study was to discuss the impact that the credit rating has on stock prices of companies listed on the Brazilian stock exchange. For a sample of 44 companies traded on BM&FBovespa and 65 long-term national ratings issued by Moody's between 2000 and 2015, we used the event study methodology, with normal returns calculated by the model of returns adjusted for risk and market the F-Test and T-Test to test the significance of the results. The final analysis showed that stock prices are not significantly affected by the disclosures of new ratings, downgrades, upgrades, on watch – possible downgrades and on watch – possible upgrades in any event window, indicating that the ratings do not bring new information to the market.Keywords: Stocks. Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of general elections on the stock returns of the politically connected group affiliated firms of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach This study uses the market model to assess the impact of political connections (PCs) on abnormal stock returns, before and after election events. We have used share price data of non-financial firms of Pakistan for the years 2008-2013. Findings It has been found that behavior of cumulative average abnormal returns (CAAR) is significantly different for standalone and politically connected group affiliated firms. The results reveal that CAARs of politically connected group affiliated firms have experienced less deviation as compared to stand alone firms. Therefore, it is argued that politically connected group firms may reduce the impact of political uncertainty on stock returns in comparison to stand alone firms. Practical implications This study is helpful for policy regulators of Pakistan to devise appropriate policies to maintain a level playing field for politically connected and standalone firms. Originality/value This study provides a new dimension to understand the role and association of PCs and general elections with stock markets returns.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic value of celebrity endorsements to Indian firms based on their branding strategy – corporate or house-of-brands – and their “congruence” or “fit” with the celebrity. The overall economic value of endorsements to firms in India, a moderately collectivist culture, is also assessed. Design/methodology/approach – Standard “event study” methodology is used to evaluate the economic value of endorsements under different branding strategies (47 endorsement announcements – 25 corporate brands and 22 house-of-brands). The impact of the level of congruence (assessed using brand personality scales) on abnormal returns is also examined. Findings – Event study results indicate significant positive abnormal returns for corporate brands and insignificant returns to house-of-brands. Moreover, the level of congruence is found to have an insignificant effect on endorsement announcement returns. Overall, celebrity endorsements result in positive economic value to Indian firms. Originality/value – This study evaluates the differences in the effectiveness of celebrity endorsements (which might form a significant part of advertising costs) to firms following different branding strategies. Findings from this study indicate that celebrity endorsement announcements from house-of-brands do not lead to any significant stock market returns (in terms of market value). Further, contrary to current literature, the results indicate that the congruence between brand and celebrity has no impact on returns to endorsements in India, warranting further examination of whether congruence or likeability is important in endorsements.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of sovereign rating signals on domestic banks’ stock returns in a European context. Design/methodology/approach The author uses an event study technique to measure short-term bank stock abnormal returns that result from domestic positive or negative sovereign rating events. Then, test results from the univariate event studies are further scrutinised with the bank- and sovereign-related factors related to cross-sectional variations in abnormal bank returns. Findings The univariate results show that positive sovereign rating events do not lead to significant bank stock price reactions, while negative events are associated with negative share price effects on domestic banks. The multivariate regression results for the subsample of negative rating events show that the degrees of contagion effects depend on which credit rating agency issues the signal, on whether the events are preceded by other negative sovereign rating signals, and in some cases on the sovereign’s initial rating level and on the bank’s liquidity ratio, profitability level and size. Originality/value The study improves the test procedures used by Caselli et al. (2016) and sheds light on the bank valuation effect induced by massive negative sovereign rating signals during the crisis period. The results highlight the share price effect of sovereign events and address political implications of introducing risk weights for sovereign debts.

The investors place great importance on the share price of publicly traded companies since it may reflect the company’s value. The research objective is to examine the relationship between financial performance and debt at share prices through dividend policy. The method of the research used is quantitative and correlational research. The data analysis technique is the use of smart PLS. The results of the study explain that financial performance has a positive effect on stock prices in the mediation of dividend policy. Debt negatively affects share price mediated by dividend policy. The implication of the study is that companies should consider the benefits as well as risks of borrowing funds from third parties. Investors and potential investors before investing their money in stocks must pay attention to financial performance, corporate debt and dividend policy so that they do not experience losses in their investment.
