Headline JAPAN: Kishida will maintain strong position on China

Significance The results have destabilised relations within the alliance involving the League, Brothers of Italy (FdI) and Forza Italia (FI), and increased speculation that FI may ally with moderate parties instead. The election results reflect the popularity of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government of national unity. Impacts The stability of Draghi’s government may boost Italy’s chances of influencing reforms to the EU’s fiscal policy framework. The election result reflects the wider recovery in business confidence already evidenced in Italy. Based on polling trends, Giorgia Meloni’s FdI is in a strong position to be the leading populist party after the next election. Meloni’s rise could increase tensions between FdI and the League, as the latter is accustomed to being the dominant party in the polls.

Subject Russia's ambitious liquefied natural gas project. Significance The first liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia's landmark Yamal LNG project is expected to be shipped by October. Yamal, in the Siberian Arctic, is enhancing an already strong position as a global gas exporter with the establishment of LNG production, an area in which Russia previously had limited expertise. The project weakens Gazprom's monopoly on gas exports and shows the Kremlin's willingness to accommodate private companies such as Novatek that can demonstrate success. Impacts Yamal LNG's successful start suggests that Novatek bids to develop other LNG sites will receive a favourable hearing. Novatek's access to other LNG projects may require further legislative amendments. Gazprom's Yamal production, with gas transported by pipeline, is intended to replace ageing western Siberian fields.

Significance The move follows the annual conference of her ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) in Glasgow this month -- its last before Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom leave the EU on March 29. Sturgeon has so far resisted pressure to call another Scottish independence referendum in response to Brexit but kept supporters’ hopes alive stressing in her keynote speech, “a better future is within our grasp”. Impacts Sturgeon’s address to the People’s Vote marchers is a clear signal to EU leaders and could stand her in good stead in future talks. Negative Brexit-related developments over the coming years will strengthen the independence movement. Scotland would be in a strong position to re-enter the EU but not to negotiate a bespoke deal.

Purpose This paper aims to understand how organizations can apply the Blue Ocean Shift process to achieve profitable growth and make competition irrelevant. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a case study approach. Based on interaction with the senior management of an organization and secondary sources, this paper presents an application of the Blue Ocean Shift process on a strategic move by an organization to achieve value innovation. Findings This paper presents a case of how Tata Motors Ltd. applied Blue Ocean Shift process to come up with the product Tata Ace, which achieved value innovation while making competition irrelevant. From assessing the current state of play to forming a motivated team, working with suppliers and fulfilling the needs of the non-customers and unhappy existing users, they were able to create a strong position for themselves. Practical implications Blue Ocean Strategy, through a process defined as Blue Ocean Shift, can be applied by organizations to achieve value innovation, change market boundaries and achieve profitable growth through their strategic offerings. It can help them get out of “red oceans” which may be a way to view the existing hypercompetitive world. Originality/value This paper contributes to the application of the Blue Ocean Shift process in the Indian context while studying a strategic move of an Indian firm. It showcases an example of how large Indian organizations can successfully apply the process to achieve value innovation.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyse the whisky market in relation to international competitiveness and international market structure. Design/methodology/approach The study uses Herfindahl–Hirschman index and net export index to describe the international market structure, and revealed symmetric comparative advantage (RSCA) index to measure export competitiveness. In addition, it was developed this stability and duration through regression analysis, and used Kaplan–Meier estimator to characterize the competitiveness survival in international whisky market. Findings The results reveal that imports market structure remained unconcentrated and, on the other hand, exports market structure is highly concentrated. Concerning the trade characteristics, UK and Ireland have a strong tendency to export; Australia, France, Japan and Spain have a strong position on import and consumption; and Latvia, The Netherlands and Singapore to re-export. About the RSCA, UK, Ireland and Latvia have highest values. UK and Ireland are totally stable during the period analysed, and other countries such as USA, Singapore and Latvia also have a greater survival rate of RSCA. Originality/value This study provides a comprehensive and current analysis of the international whisky market structure and competitiveness, contributing to the analysis of the international market for products that have differentiation and focus appeal, such as whisky.

Purpose Modern slavery is a problem that international business (IB) research can no longer ignore. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) are often contributors to the persistence of modern slavery, by virtue of the regulatory challenge they pose to states and their insufficient oversight of supply chains. The purpose of this paper is to show that governance inadequacies with respect to modern slavery will be lessened if IB scholars give more attention to MNEs’ governing role within and beyond global value chains. Design/methodology/approach A set of arguments is presented in support of intensified effort in IB research with respect to studying the role of MNEs in transnational labour governance. The paper draws inspiration from IB theory and the conceptualisation of the MNE in neighbouring disciplines that regard it as a bearer of duties toward labour, consistent with its role in multilevel governance. Insights from the literature on global and multi-level governance are utilised. Findings The paper construes modern slavery as a multi-level governance challenge and argues that MNE capabilities and responsibilities with respect to labour governance and the deterrence of slavery exceed those identified on the margins of IB literature. MNEs are underappreciated as governors within the multilevel transnational labour governance system. The IB discipline is in a strong position to develop our understanding of the MNE’s different roles in governance and thereby contribute to the reduced incidence of modern slavery. Originality/value This paper represents an attempt to mobilise the IB academy to help eliminate slavery from workplaces that rely on MNE patronage or where labour rights abuses are made possible by MNE diversion of governance resources. It places particular emphasis on the use and abuse of MNEs’ governance capabilities in the sphere of international relations and calls attention to over-simplification of the MNE, IB’s primary unit of analysis.

Significance This left little room for politicisation by parties to engage public opinion. However, support for such parties is stable compared to pre-pandemic levels, suggesting they are well-positioned to benefit in the post-crisis period. Impacts Centrists will try to ensure that the Taliban victory in Afghanistan does not lead to a fresh migration crisis that boosts populists. Following Brexit and the creation of the European recovery fund, Euroscepticism may become less of a feature of right-wing populism. Based on current polling, the far-right Brothers of Italy are in a strong position to lead Italy’s next government.

Subject London euro-clearing post-Brexit. Significance The European Commission released draft legislation on June 13 proposing the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) supervise non-EU-based clearing houses that are deemed systemically important, in effect giving the EU the power to insist euro-clearing remains in the bloc after Brexit. On June 23, the ECB proposed a “significantly enhanced” role for the ECB in euro-clearing. Forcing euro-clearing into the euro-area shows the bloc puts protecting its own interests before globalisation, also suggesting that the post-Brexit EU may increasingly prioritise political imperatives over economic ones, and become less open to international business. Impacts The draft law will affect New York and Tokyo, which will gain from London if European finance becomes more fragmented. If passed, the law will give the ESMA strong powers to determine the geography of EU finance. Such political direction could cause tensions as not all EU member states are likely to welcome it.

Subject The outlook for China's efforts to export nuclear energy technology. Significance The UK government's decision this month to approve the construction of a nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point in south-west England is seen as a breakthrough for the export ambitions of China's nuclear power companies, one of which is to take a one-third stake in the project. Impacts With many advanced economies spurning nuclear energy, China is in a strong position to help developing countries boost their capacity. State support will give Chinese firms advantages over other exporters, including Russian and South Korean state-owned firms. This advantage is likely to be sustained regardless of any setbacks Chinese firms face in advanced countries. The UK government's review of the Hinkley C project suggests greater scrutiny of Chinese involvement in future infrastructure projects.
